How much should I pay for 2x4x8 framing studs? Big box stores they sell for 4.5 a pop. Should I go somewhere else for them?

>> No.1889287

>>1889259
I was going to say that's too much but after quick looking around apparently the price of 2x4 studs is through the roof. I swear they were $2 or $2.50 the last time I bought them around February from Menards. I know there has been a shortage of treated lumber but I hadn't heard anything about studs.

why shouldnt a big hunk of wood cost 5?

apparently there's a lumber shortage now because of chinkaids.

I just know because I was going to have some work done on my place, but my carpenter doesn't want to do anything until lumber prices go back down.

this maybe a retarded idea but is it possible to treat your own lumber because untreated is 3.00

Go to a lumber yard you retard. Home Depot and Lowe's and the like add on the 1 dollar moron fee and a yard will fork lift it into your truck for you.

Not very effectively. You'd need a large vacuum chamber to get the treating chemicals into the board otherwise you're just treating the outside surface.

Shopped around for studs. I made today, home cheapo is actually the cheapest I found.

Douglas fir has near doubled in price since last i checked. They were less than $0.50/foot at beginning of year, but now are over $0.80/foot. That's just for 2x4 lengths. I imagine shit's crazy for everything else.

>> No.1889681

I read that one of the causes for the current lumber price increase/shortage has to do with Canada vs America. Supposedly tar rigs are being added to Canadian lumber. Not sure if this is the whole truth or not. Anyone else heard anything different? Cause the prices are absolute bullshit right now.

over the pond outdoor timbers are high pressure treated e.g. in a vac chamber but stick framing timber is mostly untreated and if treated usually its low pressure just painted on because it doesn't get washed wet it just gets damp and that is enough. interestingly big box stores will sell you high pressure treated stick framing timber but go to a merchant or yard and they will give you the eye if you ask for it.
saying that there is a sawmill near me that you can take basically anything he can forklift into his vac chamber and he will pressure treat it for you for basically cost.
prices are basically similar for easy edge but you go to a store you have to spend a few hours finding a few that aren't bananas

You won't find "surface treated" lumber in the US. You either get untreated lumber or fully treated lumber.

OP, if you're going to "home cheapo", you should use a 10-20% off coupon you can buy online from ebay or a site like https://www.lowesdeals.com/
I use these fucking coupons every time I have to buy supplies from the big box store, and they cost around 1$ a piece for the 10% off ones. They've saved me thousands over the last few years.
You used to be able to buy (stolen?) gift cards/store credit at a discount online to use with them, but now they have put a stop to that by requiring store credit to be tied to your ID

Also, as far as treatment is concerned, you can brush on a solution of borax to treat the wood; it's available as commercial solutions as well (Tim-bor etc) and is a super economical and effective technique for wood that won't be actively wetted. In other words, its good for framing lumber, but not so much for ground contact/underground use. There are relevant research findings and technical standards available regarding this method if you have a quick search. Pic related.

Shits expensive now. Used to be like $2.50 for kiln dried now it's $4.50 at home depot for shit that is guaranteed to warp on you within a couple of days or $5 from the lumber yard for properly dried 2x4s bit they are all chewed the fuck up by shitty blades. I just built a medium sized shed that measures about 250 square feet and the lumber alone ran me well over a thousand. Shit was so expensive (cheapest plywood I could find was $25, pressure treated 4x4x8s were fucking $17) that I had to modify my design. I had to go fucking stagger 6 feet on center and 4 feet on center studs for the walls and 3 feet on the roof. I couldn't justify building it to spec when to do so I'd be looking at another 2-3k for fucking studs that are either bowed on three edges or chopped up and structurally unsound.

Shits bad. The price is through the roof and quality is way the fuck down.

>> No.1893344

>>1890065
What? No. They buy it and store it until it is purchased. Wood is treated/finished by the mill. If you are building something outdoors at a minimum the pieces that will be contacting the ground need to be treated. But also with treated lumber you have to make sure you are using fasteners that can handle it, the majority of screws will corrode pretty quickly in pressure treated wood because they use copper to treat them and most metals corrode when they contact other metal.

Which, I have noticed that the box stores by me seem to have fucking nothing in stock as far as screws go. The vast majority of screws at my home Depot are not rated for anything structural. Best I can find is interior structural screws in shit sizes or outdoor non structural screws.

It's a shitshow out there.
