1845707 No.1845707 [Reply] [Original]

Just bought me a generator, since ya know, no place to go for free wifi and outlets. So I'm planning to drag it behind my bike in a doggie trailer and turn the puppy on (no pun intended) when I need some juice for my ebike, phone, laptop etc. Anywho, my question is how do I go about building a box to hide it that also stays cool? I'm in Las Vegas and we're hot as fuck here, but if the cops here a generator on a bike I have no doubt they'll start fucking with me.

Appreciate your advice.

You and everyone who operates one of those clanky noise contraptions in public should be rounded up and used as cheap cattle feed.

Tow around a solar panel instead, or lay off the meth for a few weeks and spend a couple hundred more on a used Honda 2000.

>> No.1845721

well, this was $230. A used honda 2000 is $600+, new $1000. Why do I need that extra hassle? I only can use 300-400 watts of juice.

So are you going to help me make a sound-deadener box for it? Otherwise, shut your pie hole, these little gens aren't even that loud to begin with.

You can do a decent job of directing noise away from neighbors using something as simple as a sheet of plywood propped up on one side of it. As for a permanent box, I would think anything other than a security box made of expanded metal would contribute to overheating.

Not on a bike. On a trailer behind a bike. One panel and one battery will be plenty to charge a phone, laptop etc. The battery doesn't even need to be very big, or even necessarily in good working order, if you only want to use your laptop during the day. It just needs to be there to be a buffer between the panel and charge controller and your charger.

This wouldn't be nearly enough to charge the ebike though. I didn't read that at first honestly. Charge the bike at home, or if OP is homeless then sell the gay ebike and get a pedal/gas bike for a few hundred bucks and attach your trailer to that. Pic related, here's mine I'm building as we speak, by complete coincidence.

The sound diminishes greatly after 26 feet, of course the idea is not to run it in a public park, but where I'm near the street on on a trail along the highway, the noise box is just subterfuge, so its not immediately noticeable, but if someone gets their snout all up in it, they are going to know what's up.

You seem confused so let me say this again in different words:
You're wrong, that fucking obnoxious noise machine can be heard from miles around, I hate you and everyone like you.

I'm really not trying to just be a dick. I have built multiple off grid solar set ups, multiple engine driven bicycles, owned multiple generators, talked many people out of owning useless noise machines, and even sabotaged generators operated by dickheads who surely thought 'this piece of shit was the cheapest available and therefore everyone around me should listen to it all the fucking time.'

No.

Don't listen to my advice if you're that determined not to. But you came here asking questions, and the answer is you're going about it wrong.

I am in San Diego right now and about to drive to Oregon. If you have an actual discrete project that you actually need help with, I will even volunteer to stop by in Vegas and give you pointers. Maybe even help you with my tools. But I will not endorse running that goddamn noise generator for any fucking reason.

If you're just homeless and running the cheapest shit you can find and don't care to learn or improve yourself, then godspeed, carry on, enjoy your meth, and I hope you stumble across a poisoned bottle of Mad Dog 20/20.

ok, I appreciate the good faith and opinionated help that you are trying to impart -- I truly do.

But you seem to be saying that building a mobile sound box is impossible -- or you don't know if possible?

For example, materials that absorb the sound + air gap between the layers + baffle on the exhaust + intake air fan for cooling.

Are you saying that's not possible in your humble opinion, or that you don't know anything about that and you just hate these small gas gens?

Your offer to aide a fellow anon IRL is bro-tier, and I do appreciate.

Okay. No, I have never attempted to build a sound-proof enclosure for a generator. My intuition and basic knowledge of thermodynamics tells me that any attempt to do so would be fruitless and only contribute to overheating of the generator. I might be wrong, but, even if I am wrong..... I would still recommend beginning with a generator that is moderately quiet in the first place.

Have you listened to a variety of generators and other small engine appliances?

Honda 2000 sounds like:
>bbluuurrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

The cheap shit generator you pictured or any Harbor Freight generator or any shit like that sounds like:
>BLLLLLAAHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHH *PAP* BBBLLAAAARRAGRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA *CHUG CHUG* BLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA *PAP PAP* BLLLLLHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAaaaAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAblrgAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA*PAP*AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA

Why the fuck are you attempting to engineer some sound-deadening box with extra electrical requirements for fans ventilation etc, when you could just have one solar panel and one battery? Please sell that shitty generator to a different meth head and learn from your failtures beginning immediately.

Also, sorry for sounding like an asshole, I'm getting drunk at this hour. I do not hate all small gas generators but I DO hate the ones such as in your picture that are better designed as obnoxious noise machines than as electrical generators.

Seriously, if you are homless it would be much more efficient to run a gas bike than to try to keep rolling your ebike. This is coming from a person who has not had a physical address in over five years.

Op the biggest problem you're going to have is overheating, those things get farkin hot sitting in the shade with free airflow, if you try and muffle the sound you're going to have to restrict a lot of air flow around it even with fans and the more fans you add for cooling the less sound suppression you'll have coz of the holes for the fans.

jesus christ if it will get OP to go away and generator hater to fuck off as well heres how to build your god damn sound deadner.

FUCKMERUNNING!
build a box about 4 inches larger than the outside dimensions of the generator.
line it with egg crate. vent the box with a 4 inch pipe pointing straight up.

get a 12 volt boat bilge ventilator fan 130cfm.

connect the bilge vent fan to blow IN to the box.

Put a 12v 10 amp pwm motor speed controller on the fan.

connect the 12v vent fan to the 12v outlet on the generator or a battery. beware that it can draw as much as 10 amps.

Now an explanation of why:

4 inches allows air flow around the generator.
the vent pipe pointing up will send most of the noise not absorbed by the egg crate upwards. the higher the vent pipe the quieter it will be.

The bilge fan we create a positive pressure in the box helping the engine get are and move a lot of cooling air around it.

the pwm controller allows you to control the fan speed to find the optimum air flow with the lowest noise since bilge fans are kind of loud.

everything I talked about is available on ebay.

cost should be less than $100.

now fuck off.

Ok so, first off, not that anon but you legit sound like a degenerate bum.

However you make me laugh and I like the cut of yer jib lil fella.

Hypothetically speaking of course, I may or may not have a friend, who may have, at one time, in an alternate universe, who used dropped ceiling tiles to insulate a wooden box that housed a large inline fan, for the purpose of moving large amounts of air for completely legal reasons. In this hypothetical scenario, the fan was loud as shit and could be heard throughout both floors of a domicile. After being placed in the box, surrounded by the tiles, and the box being screwed shut, the fan could barely be heard while standing in the room it operated in.

The tiles makes a lot of dust after being as the cut edges constantly drop “shavings” whenever touched. This is easily remedied by working 100% silicone along and into the edges with a gloved hand. They can be attached to the wood with just drywall screws. Just tighten them enough to snug them into the tiles obviously.

The tiles are also fire resistant so that should be good for your gas powered hobo contraption.

Generator hater here. Sorry for drunkposting last night, but I maintain that it is pants-on-head-retarded to have an electric bike and tow around a gas powered generator to charge the electric bike. Can you see how inefficient that is? A gas bike gets 80-100 miles on one gallon. That generator is bigger than the engine that would drive the bike, and you wouldn't need the trailer. You could probably even use the magneto from the engine to charge a small battery for use charging your phone and laptop.

Op if your ebike works like mine you'll have to run the generator for quite a while to charge the battery. Basically you'll want an insulated box that also has a vent for the exhaust. You'll need to install a couple of small fans to keep it cool; one blowing air into the intake and one sucking air out at the exhuast point. Since you're in Vegas and it's hot AF, you could make your box larger and install copper or aluminum radiator fins for extra cooling (check a local scrapyard.) I would look for old radiant wall heaters or pull a radiator or two out of old vehicles. So, the order of things is generator, radiator fins, insulation with high heat rating (rockwool, may do the trick), outer box material (wood or plastic).
You'll also want to come up with some way to stabilize the compressor in the middle. I'm thinking long bolts or threaded rods that go all the way through the box and hold the compressor in place. Use rubber washers at all contact points to reduce vibration

He wants the generator to charge his bike, not a cell phone. A solar panel and a small battery will not do it. Especially because his bike is likely not 12v, which means he'll need a converter and a charge controller. Why don't we just add wings and a propeller to OPs claptrap so it's extra bulky and noticeable. Oh and maybe some motor cycle tires for the extra weight.

Also, buy yourself some earplugs, so you don't go deaf in case the insulated box design doesn't work out. You may want to consider a second battery as well. Then you can charge the backup battery while riding the open road and just get an adapter and use the bike battery to power your laptop so don't have a gas generator popping and firing a couple feet from your head during your quiet time.

The OSHA guidelines are based on what OSHA determined was acceptable over 8hr periods to provide workers a "reasonable" preservation of their hearing. You can still get NIHL from chronic exposure to noises quieter than 80dB, the exposure times are just longer.

i.e. "if you follow these guidelines you can expect to not have too much hearing loss until retirement age, after that we don't care how much you lost on the job lol"

Also 76dB is not a low hum, that's quite loud, like running a vacuum in an adjacent room with the door open.

First off goofus I already own the exact generator op shows in his original post. It's very quiet and ear plugs are not needed, I used it when camping and putting it at the end of a 25 foot cord is far enough away that you can have a normal conversation with people.

also I have 5 generators including 1 I built myself. none them "pop".

>>1847750
seriously you should research before you open mouth insert foot and chew vigorously.

76db is only 16 over a normal conversation.

A washing machine puts out 70db

city traffic inside a car is about 80db

over 85db is where hearing damage begins to occur.

Great to know you're unbothered standing next to a generator. I find them loud and obnoxious, just as I find gas powered bikes loud and obnoxious. I've done hearing tests with groups of people and usually I can hear both lower and higher tones than others. I'm not saying I'm special, my ears just work well because I never fucked them up by spending a lot of time in loud environments. I wear earplugs when I need to vacuum because it's more pleasant. I don't live near city traffic and would not. I leave the house or close doors if a washer is running. For what it's worth, I've heard generators pop. I've heard them make all kinds of noise. Spend a few years as a maintenance worker and you'll encounter all sorts of generator noises.
And like the other anon spewing his hate for them, I absolutely hate when someone brings a loud ass generator into the serenity of a forest campground. And honestly, all generators are loud in the forest.

2nd, 75dB can cause hearing damage if prolonged and daily. Unlikely, but considering OP will be sitting next to this thing when it's running, yeah it can.
also 70dB is considered as loud as you can get before resorting to mild yelling.

but most importantly, the point isn't that it's harmful, I don't give a shit what OP does to his hearing. Play stupid games win stupid prizes.

My point is that it's not as whisper quiet as you and OP claim it to be. 76dB on the sidewalk would easily be enough to piss off the neighborhood and be a nuisance enough to piss off anyone trying to enjoy at least some silence.

I have learned that it's not just insulation, but empty air is also needed. I placed a cardboard box around one and filled with spray foam. The sound deadening was disappointing, negligible. I'm sure a box lined with egg crate foam or flaky ceiling tiles would work much better, because of the air space. At least better than placing the insulation directly on the fan.

Also hanging the fan with bungee helps.

I cannot believe this dumpster fire of a thread arose because this guy over here is so entitled that he believes cafes should pay for his transportation costs.

If you go charge complimentary shit while you drink your cup of coffee, it's presumed that's low draw stuff like your phone charger, or maybe laptop if you have something you actually need to be doing on it. Charging your freaking electric bicycle battery is comparatively high draw and that is not an incidental use while at the coffee shop, you're just exploiting them to charge your bicycle. Would you also expect for them to pay for your gas money to go around and nurse cups of coffee?

How the fuck can your electric bike not complete a 36 round trip on a full charge? Are you seriously that cheap you refuse to charge it at home, or is the bike seriously that useless it cannot complete this loop on one charge?

The bike battery is 9.6Ah - it can do 20 miles easy with assist, but a mere 10 miles if leaning on the motor. I like to lean and enjoy the ride.

I respect your opinion, but I'm buying food too, and doing 36 miles by bike instead of car is huge difference in carbon footprint. No one has ever expressed anything but curiosity at the battery when they noticed it. Most cafe owners think its cool AF and that more people should do it. Pennies in electric? Plus I tip a fin when I'm going to be a couple hours there.

>84 Watts is high draw?
For free with your coffee? Yes.

>Less than a 100 Watt light
No one uses 100 watt bulbs since like 2006. Comparable lumen bulbs are like 8 fucking watts now.

>it can do 20 miles
What a worthless piece of shit. How much did you pay for this thing?

>10 miles if leaning on the motor. I like to lean and enjoy the ride
Then why do you not own a powered bike that can accomodate your riding style?

>I respect your opinion
I do not respect yours. It is borne of wishful thinking and unicorn farts and shares no resemblance with practical application.

>carbon footprint
Do you even know where the cafes get their electricity? Fuel sources at the plants? Infrastructure required for the electric grid? The employees' cars to get to the plant? The employees' ENTIRE HOUSES AND CONSUMER LIFESTYLES FINANCED BY THEIR PAYCHECKS? The manufacturing process of the bicycle? The mining for the components that go into the lithium batteries? Machinery for mining? Moving raw materials, assembly? Amazon vans that probably delivered it? Marketing people who sold you on that dumb bike, their lifestyles and homes? Footprints of the cafes and their employees? How can you even pretend to have any idea what your carbon footprint is????? This is just a talking point they sold you on to buy that retarded bike, you consumer whore.

If you actually cared about your carbon footprint, you would pedal your ass around.

>curiosity at the battery when they noticed it
The fact that your server is also a retard who has been duped into thinking that electricity is magic free clean energy does not make you any less retarded.

>tip a fin when I'm going to be a couple hours
At least you do that for cafes you patronize, but this changes nothing of the environmental considerations we've touched, and economically, that tip could have gone into the tank of a gas powered bike and it would complete your 36 mile round trip -- at a lower carbon footprint over its lifetime, I'll wager.

>> No.1852814

you are being inflammatory for your own fun.. even a retard knows that the footprint of a simple bicycle with a 360W motor is about 1/100th the carbon emissions of a 1/2 ton gasoline powered vehicle.

That's some mad trollin' u doing right there brah, drinking again?

As I said, its a 9.6Ah battery, its a gentle assist.

Now to the point of boosting range with the gen, the gen burns .55 gallons of fuel in 6 hours approximately. While you can argue that's a horrible emissions device, it still goes nowhere near the carbon emissions of full car that gets 25 mpg even.

Did you also, in your alcohol fueled rant, realize that free electric receptacles are available in every major city at most large chain stores for people to charge their electric cars? Electric biking takes but a sip compared to those puppies.

Enjoy your day, your hard core troll made me chuckle.

He's laughing at the egg crate idea. The trouble with egg crates next to a hot generator in a box should be obvious. There's a decent chance they will catch on fire or melt depending on the egg crate. They are the right shape for sound deadening, but the wrong material. You want something fireproof or fire resistant at least.

Is what? Are you reading a marketing pamphlet right now? How can you even pretend to take into account half the variables I outlined above? The truth is you cannot. I can't either. The people who wrote the marketing pamphlet also cannot.

>about 1/100th the carbon emissions of a 1/2 ton gasoline powered vehicle
Why are you comparing apples to trucks?
You should be comparing bicycles to bicycles. And your bicycle sucks ass, sorry, not sorry. Enjoy your external-engine-trailer-electric-efficiency-loss-experiment bike.

>electric receptacles are available in every major city at most large chain store
Shit like this is done because it attracts retards with money, and overall is good for those businesses. That makes no statement as to carbon footprint, the environment, economy, or how much those businesses are spending in 'free' electricity to placate retards. It's simply good business.

op, best bet for your needs

1) get motor kit with spark plugs(cleaning/reliability versus carb)(generally have separate oil reservoir) and can still pedal your bike(longer distances) and less wear/tear/cost
2) get electric motor front wheel kit(charge with generator/coffee cafe for 20-30 miles a day)(no electric bike is made for repeated charging every single day/wears out batteries fast
3)get high temp insulation/use high temp/fire retardant glue to egg shells to line that carrier you have and install variable fan with breaker/dial and plug into your 12 volt attachment
4)get a muffler with sound dampening factor(no harley/motorbike/listen to this dipshit sound amplification) a muffler WILL MUFFLE YOUR NOISE and help keep your trailer from igniting/cut down on fumes

EXTRA BONUS/LIFETIME EXTENDER
5) get some high density lithium batteries and a solar charger mmpa panel/12 volt water heater with ceramic cover to put in a flexible water bladder(silicon best)
)attach SEVERAL SOLAR PANELS TO CHARGER(no one uses only a single panel(lots of foldable panels will work great without taking up space))
)attach water heater to light bulb panel AFTER putting ceramic cover(pet stores/hardware stores) over heating element and put into a full silicon/rubber water jug(put this opposite your fuel tank for your generator)
)attach to lithium batteries(make sure charger is made for lithium otherwise use deep cycle)

Now you have a bike that is a literal hybrid, capable of running on gas/electric AND human power. You are towing a trailer that carries a well disguised and noise dampened generator AND solar powered battery array and water heater.

No lack of hot water for cleaning your sweaty self/cooking food/making coffeee/sterilizing your clothes. You are capable of traveling out of state and to other places than Vegas, travel around without having to pay for coffee for power, and if you are desperate use your heated water to keep from freezing at night LOTB

Not him but just wanted to say states have been investing in renewable energy for decades. Solar is bigger than ever in Britain, and America has its share of wind farms and hydroelectric plants. So electricity distributed by the grid can be considered by the consumer to be <100% non-renewable, whereas gas burned by the consumer to generate electricity is 100% non-renewable.

You're right that commerce and society in general are wasteful and contribute to an overall notable carbon footprint, but that doesn't mean individuals within that society can't make personal choices to limit how much they are responsible for. Otherwise, by your logic, OP would be just as justified running a Hummer as an e-bike because the carbon footprint is negligible compared to society as a whole. None of us are responsible for society as a whole, just for our own behavior.

Honestly though the importance of an individual's carbon footprint is entirely a marketing ploy, you are 10,000% right and I couldn't agree more. Yeah it may be the only thing you can take personal responsibility for, but that doesn't mean it matters for shit when super-industry is pumping out pollution by the megatons. Planet's still fucked.

Yes, and in this case, one individual's behavior is supporting an overpriced/proprietary/fad electric bike, and the other individual is assembling his bike out of existing, used parts. One of those fits in your analogy, the other does not.

If you are concerned with carbon footprint, or recycling, or the environment in general, then you should only buy used. It's always higher impact to manufacture new so don't support new manufacture if you don't agree with that. You should be driving a 40 year old VW Rabbit instead of a Prius if you mean it.

There's always more you could be doing. Everyone has to strike the right balance in their own life. You too could be a more perfect and principled being, but I bet you engage in some light hypocrisy now and again, as all humans do. And OP's carbon footprint isn't just an intangible value, it also affects things like noise and air pollution in OP's community. It normalizes electric vehicles in a country with strong resistance to more sustainable practices.

Thanks for the tip about buying used. Did OP say their bike was bought new? I myself have only ever owned used vehicles and haven't bought new clothing, furniture, or appliances in over a decade. I'm not trying to waste money and vanity on something off the assembly-line when perfectly good stuff is just sitting around, waiting to be used. So you're preaching to the choir there. You need to slow your roll on that judgment stuff though, man. Relax, there are a million entitled youngsters out there at any given time. Getting angry just makes you angry, it doesn't make them not be entitled anymore.

My issue is that by and large these various proprietary electric designs are only ever going to be disposable. Batteries have an inherent lifespan even with proper maintenance, and no one maintains them correctly. The packs as far as I know are largely proprietary. In ten years or so you're not going to see those models circulating around new, they're going to go right in the trash. Meanwhile a car can be maintained and repaired and a gas engine bike is both made from used parts and also can be infinitely repaired.
