Anyone know how to rig a car starter without replacing it? I've gotten it to run about 4 times with extra wire that I fused together with the old bits and a jump. Not sure what else I can try.

What the hell are you doing? Is the wiring or relay fucked up? Or the actual starter? If it’s the starter, you’re probably just getting lucky when it starts again after you fuck with it.

No spec, no description of the problem, potato cam, not explaining what's been actually tried well enough to understand.

Nothing to see here. Carry on.

I wouldn't say lucky, I need the car and the part arrives in 2 weeks. I've gotten it to start, with varying levels of success, but the ground wire keeps burning up as soon as its attached.

How in the literal fuck is your GROUND WIRE BURNING

He has to have a direct short somewhere...

Does the starter try to turn over as soon as the ground wire is hooked up?

Honestly, no damn clue. I have 4 wires on this starter. 2 in the front on the solenoid, and 2 to the motor itself. One of them heats up red hot.

It does turn over, it takes a try but comes to life soon after.

Have you cleaned the post for the ground and the lug with sandpaper or a wore brush? If yes, what does it connect to on the other end and have you cleaned that also?
Whole thing sounds weird tho, starters normally have positive to relay, positive from relay to starter and they ground through the block. Maybe your block ground is shoddy so someone added a new ground?
If you just need it to last and cleaning isn't working, find, steal buy whatever a 2-4ga wire or 2-3 runs of 12ga romex long enough to reach your battery and run it to the starter.

Remove the starter. Inspect the starter. Diagnose problem then reinstall the starter after fixing it.

NAME THE YEAR, MAKE, MODEL AND ENGINE DISPLACEMENT OF THE FUCKING CAR because otherwise it's difficult to give specific advice.

With the starter removed you may be able to repair it locally. What is your location so no one wastes time giving wrong advice?

Stop fiddling with the installed starter. Do inspect all the relevant wires. Disconnect the positive battery cable at the battery before removing the starter.
