Looking to make cheap air and water filters. Has anyone ever made purifying products from activated carbon? I want to make an air filter and a water filter, mostly for dust and pollen. I saw all I needed was a box fan and hepa or other filters for the air filter, and a carbon layer for smells (that I can make with activated charcoal), any good suggested ones for an amerifat? I think I need a pollen and dust one, are they as simple as pleating up a specialty fabric? Thanks!

Yep.

Your OP is very vague. What kind of pollutants do do you wish to remove to what extent, from what medium?

>activated carbon.

It's a fucking meme dude. Like every hang on back aquarium filter has expensive as shit carbon pouches. Amd unless you are dosing meds and need to filter them out there is 0 fucking use for it.

I mean. Technically it works and absorbs bad shit but you'd need a truckload a month to do anything useful for your home. Air filters are even cheaper. Plus if you breathe only perfect air you'll walk outside and die for an hour cause it smells bad

activated carbon is expensive because making it correctly is expensive. making it at home just means you end up with more carcinogenic compounds than ever in your water

What did you make? I want to make a water filter and also maybe an air filter with some. I want to remove the dust and pollen from the air as well as viruses in this weather. I wouldn't mind making a mask if I knew what materials they used for the masks. Is it some sort of tyvek, eptfe, or other synthetic fabrics?

carbon in aquarium filters has a very specific(though 100% aesthetic) reason for being there. without it the water will slowly star turning yellow/brown from all the colorants and tannins that are released into the water from food/waste/driftwood/whatever. as well as any smells that could exist.

not needed by a long shot, but the majority of people in the hobby want crystal clear water at all times.

I don't know what filter should go in it. Any more info? I just saw this used cellulose (unless that was a joke about the cardboard), I was looking at polypropylene, and polyester because that is what they use in n95 masks. I was hoping to get the raw material for filters and making some myself. I was thinking of making several stages, with the prefilter, filter and then maybe an odor filter (with the activated carbon). I just hope it doesn't block the air too much.

1. Steel mesh, maybe with dampening foam as the prefilter.
2. Actual filter, I was here looking up what goes into a HEPA filter, I want to have the ability to filter sizes that are .03 microns, I think that cellulose can do that as well. Is that just the same as a furnace one? Is there a way I can just get a sheet of it?
3. Odor filter, activated charcoal layer. Probably won't have it in most of the time but I do like the idea of using one if I need to.

How does the industry remove these carcinogenic compounds? On a budget, no less?

I see.

Still though. Imagine living in a clean room and then someone sneezing in the grocery store. You'd be sick all the damned time wouldn't you?

I see. Well i plan on intentionally growing as much algea as my plants and live bros can handle. Then raise a bunch of shrimp or start a brine shrimp tank and toss it in there

I saw the old thread and I also read a bit more about diy air filters. I can buy rewashable polyester, polyflo. I guess I'll end up using a bunch of aquarium supplies too since it seems to be another aquarium supply material. Filtering air and water is a lot more similar than I thought. Also seems very hard to get diy material for making air filters. I think the best way is to use allergenic hammock storage, I looked up the specs it's MERV 11. https://www.amazon.com/30x60-cut-Filtrete-Hammock-Filter/dp/B003DWE3OQ
