Thinking of building a desk with a built in computer. Nothing super fancy though, just something on the lighter side but reliably sturdy, and easily transportable if necessary. What would be the best wood to use?

Finished plywood, if you have to ask then you don't know how to keep anything else from warping like crazy after 3 months. Your pic is 100% MDF or plywood.

This has some info. I think they look rad. Hope you actually do it.

Yeah I was looking at that. Something like what I posted was what I'm looking to do since I dont currently own a custom loop and keeping good airflow is ideal.

I dont mind it, but i hate that good components can get their price hiked solely because of rgb/gamer "looks"

little advice.
use something like a door sweep to put cables through the back.
i tried making a desk using the i/o plate and pci-e brackets to secure cards.
lining it all up is a pain. a sweep brush would be a better idea.

Don't. It fucking sucks. Made one in high school.

Building in them sucks since you have make the mounts yourself (unless you're actually got at that stuff and have access to a metal workshop with CNC).
Access to ports on the back is trash and a huge hassle.
Dust will be completely visible because of the glass, so you'll want filters and easy access to the inside for fast cleaning.
Transportation will be next to impossible without a van or trailer. And even more annoying if you encounter the sworn enemy of the desk PC: stairs.
And use glass. I used acrylic and that shit scratches like crazy.

The only way to possibly make it good is if you make it "super fancy".

Suddenly felt like too much of a downer. If you think it's fun to build stuff, go ahead. But it's much more just a way to get likes on instagram than it's practical. It's pure rice.

you're better off building a compartment inside a desk, where you put the PC case inside
If not, you're going to have a bunch of trouble like >>1747756

This thread got me thinking about how I would do it.

I think the key is accessibility. Being able to easily get to the hardware and connect shit to it. Also try to streamline it as much as possible. Both to keep the ergonomic part of the desk (a thick desk is not ergonomic) and to keep it light.

And if you have a tray system you could be able to easily remove the computer altogether. Maybe even make is so you don't need to move the desk if you want to got to a LAN-party or some shit, but just take the PC tray out and bring it with you.

This is actually an interesting design, having a stand to raise the monitor is a good idea. What's pic related supposed to be? I take it the rectangles to the left are the disk drives?

Worse yet, some of the performance parts (ie RAM) only comes in rgb now to add higher profit margins. Noctua has even caved for /aesthetics/ and now makes all black coolers, a deviation from their "hideous" yet best of market brown, tan, and bare metal systems.

As disgusted as I am to have to admit it, because it's shit and I hate working with it...MDF is probably the go-to thing to use, due to its very regular surface and dimensional stability. It won't warp, unless of inadequate thickness and support, is cheap, and needs little to no prep for paint.

GOOD plywood (cabinet-grade stuff) would be "better", but substantially more expensive.

I've got a sheet of tempered glass tucked away for this exact project and plan to use steel (better still than plywood), but that takes equipment that most simply don't have and is too expensive to justify for a single project like this.

this is a cool idea.
ignore the haters. it's so easy it's laughable. I would have done the same except I use 3 different towers.
many a day I've sat down and kicked my tower or felt that cold kiss of steel under my desk and though "god if only it were mounted somehow in a place I wouldn't kick it, like IN the desk or something."
rad idea, 10/9. would do.

How do you keep it cool? Doesnt look like theres much room for airflow or AIO

>> No.1750500

>>1750303
I could make it higher for larger fans. Now I looked at noctua, and only their 60mm fans would fit (they don't have 70mm). But it would be worth either way to add 10mm for the possibility of an 80mm fan and larger air cooler. But this was just a concept render and I didn't bother working out all the technical details for it.
But honestly, I don't think it would run that hot. It has a very open solution, and most modern hardware doesn't really run that hot unless you look at professional-grade stuff.

I also don't have any personal experience with water cooling, but it just seems like more of a hassle then it's worth, so I actively designed it with only air cooling in mind.

>> No.1750545

>>1750500
I'd assumed that the fans were drawing in air and it was being expelled through that long slit at the top/front. 80mm's would probably be better from a noise perspective. Also, don't waste your time and skills actually making this thing, for the love of jeebus anon... It's a nice concept but just leave it at that, I'm sure you've got better things to do.

>> No.1750582

>>1750545
The entire thing would be covered by a piece of glass. So two fans, one in and one out. The slit is just because I couldn't stay away from throwing some rice in it.

Yeah I definitely won't build it. I have animes to watch!
