Audio engineer here, you're not really going to get any bass response unless you fit them inside a cabinet and then make an opening for them. If I were you, I'd make one cabinet with 2 ports to fit in the bottom of the backpack, fit those cones/drivers inside the cabinet, and then buy some black mesh to put over them so it looks neat.

That looks like a cool idea though :)

Anyone m ow how I would go about mounting this inside the backpack? I was thinking of using a cardboard backing inside the pack.
There are screw holes at the corners and they are bent inwards.

Definitely do not use cardboard. If you want any kind of decent sound, you're going to have to use a cabinet like the one it came out of, or something a bit smaller. I recommend making a small wooden cabinet for each of them that fits your backpack's depth and placing the speakers at the bottom of the backpack (facing out as the OP did). The rest of the room on top you can use for storage or whatever.
