broke college student here

I'm trying to do a wire change on the famous Sony Mh755s and I need a soldering iron.

rich reddit fags keep recommending me to buy expensive iron cause "it's worth it". they it sounds so full of shit

the $15 ones on Amazon can't be THAT bad right? I'm only using it once

Just buy cheap ear buds at the gas station or walmart. You're broke but you require quality headphones? I buy $10 ear buds because I work construction and damage them all the time and Sony offers a $2 warranty where they replace broken headphones up to 3 times. So o get 3 war buds for $12 and they sound fine for radio/YouTube.

If you go with the cheap stuff, chances are good that you'll end up burning something. You need lower temps, I would go as low as 150°C

I had a cheap one for 50 bucks, it worked OK but took ages to warm up and the tips sucked.

Now I have an 80W analog Weller that cost me 300 and it was definitely worth it for me - heats up in seconds, great tip quality and you can easily get all kinds of replacement tips, also of great quality.
So yeah if you're strapped for cash and won't be soldering much, a cheap (temperature controlled!) unit will do fine, but if you plan to use it a lot a quality station will be worth the money.

What I like is that, in some shots, the tape and glue are gone. What did this dude change to once he realized hotglue and electrical tape have a lower melting point than fucking solder?

this one seems alright

just have to keep the flame on while soldering and solder somewhere the whole lot can be thrown away from body safely.

+ superglue instead of hotglue
+ tape doesn't come into direct contact with metal
- contact point gets insulated from carbon residue

Overall it's a better design, but the spiral heating area on the first one is at least a solid idea.

it would be cheaper to just get new ear buds but if you were to get a soldering station get a used Hakko, you can find em for used for under $100 and will last you for life.

Made one because curiosity. Used a paper clip for extra isolation and a relatively thin wire coil. If you're brave and the work area isn't particularly flammable its more than enough heat for cable splicing in an emergency.

Butane dab torches work real good for automotive wires and shit too. They only cost like $5. I thought about getting one of those 100w soldering guns but the butane has kept up when the little iron wasn’t enough.
