This. Gold and silver are cool long term. But short term think about all utilities and cell phones kicking the bucket. You'll want useable commodities for trade. Cigs booze fuel solar gear learn to build diy wind turbines. Ways to purify water and a spring with plenty of it would mean a lot.

I prefer to just buy guns since they use inflation to their advantage and it's a self sustaining hobby. Find a deal or act like the pawn shop for buddies. Then keep whatever I can. Can always trade later and they don't expire.

I went through an EMT course. Your essentially just trained to keep a person alive long enough to get to properly trained medical professionals. Anything more advanced than superficial bleeding is out of their hands.
Without the endgame of getting someone to a legit doctor, splinting up someone's fractured femur or stopping bloodflow from a gunshot is a waste of resources you could have used to help someone with better survival chances. In the event of societal collapse, EMT's will be useless.

Well aware of the differences, in that I've done combat life saving courses in the military, basic first aid in police academy, and 6 months of EMT training and passed the NREMT cert.
I'm speaking 100% confidently that EMT training is next to worthless without a doctor at hand in a societal collapse situation. Anything requiring more than basic first aid will likely be a death sentence without someone more skilled than an EMT. But do tell me, what sickness or injury they're so qualified to treat? What are your sources of information telling you they can accomplish these acts?

I will reneg on my statement the EMT's would be useless, because they do have knowledge of basic first aid. That much understanding can go a long ways towards preventing minor injuries from getting infected, but that information is mostly common sense and freely available to brush up on.

>without a doctor at hand
medical doctors are mostly useless, serious.
They have a professional degree not a science degree.
PhD in biochem and pharmacy are the smart disease curing types.

Honestly, downloading a bunch of medical texts, and diagnosis tables and medication guides would be worthwhile.

Decision trees on computers get to the correct diagnosis just about as good as any doctor. Then just look at the proposed treatment and contraindications. Any critical thinking man with good reading skills can provide all the care a GP can. A surgeon is a whole different thing, but you can actually get pretty good by practicing on animals. A deer and pigs anatomy is remarkebly similar for learning purposes.

>It sounds like you think being a first responder (so proper first aid course) makes you a fully fledged EMT which is nonsense.
Then I guess you misunderstood me, or don't understand the qualifications of becoming an EMT. It's as easy as a 6 month course, and then passing the national and state certification tests and getting hired somewhere. But no, I'm not an EMT, because they make shit pay for working shit hours--because the training is so basic. In a functional society, EMT's are still extremely valuable. They most definitely save lives and perform duties that are above and beyond what your standard basic first aid course would teach you. A lot of this above and beyond training is essentially how to prolong life under grievous conditions or how to generally not make the condition worse in transport.
However, we're talking societal collapse, and being able to extend one's life over the course of hours or maybe even days is great and all, but without an endgame of having someone better trained to hand the patient off to, a lot of the EMT training is useless outside of basic first aid. Maybe I'm forgetting some obscure situation in which only some EMT specific training might lead to a full recovery--but my point was and has always been that a lot of EMT training is kinda pointless if we're talking SOCIETAL COLLAPSE. Any incident that someone can't just walk away from is likely a death sentence in this sort of scenerio, so why would you need training on c-spine immobilization, oxygen usage, and traction devices when all that is going to do is ease their comfort in route to a hospital which may no longer be operational?

>>1658267
This. Paramedics require 10x the course hours of EMT training, and at the very least can administer IV drips--which seems like a very handy skill in a SHTF scenerio. I can see why people would think an EMT is qualified to do so much, in that most ambulances have one of each on board.

You can do a lot of preparation now by yourself such as first-aid training and getting a first-aid kit, installing water butts for rainwater harvesting, installing water filter kits, solar panels for direct electricity, a vegetable garden for practice plus as a seed bank, keep a few chickens, planting fruit trees (many don't fruit until they are several years old), having a non-mains way to cook food such as wood stove, building a root cellar, building a wood shed, building discrete security measures such as planting thorny bushes on the perimeter, reinforcing your windows and doors, etc.

People who live in the country, already have these advantages

I meant that you need to plan in advance. Make arrangements so that you have
a place lined up, a friend or relative in the country who can take you in and put you to work.

A lot of people who live in New York, rent storage units west of the city. A rented garage where they keep a vehicle and supplies.
If people are starving, and you're carrying a backpack that might have food in it, you could be attacked. Better to look like you have nothing. This is why they keep their supplies outside the city. They just need to get to their supply stash, they don't need to carry it with them while they are getting out of the city.

Something that can generate an EMP large enough to take out all the electronics in a large area is going to kill every in the area also. People don't know how hard it is to actually kill electronics with an EMP and any significant range. You need something with the power of a nuclear bomb to generate a large EMP and even then most electronics will survive it. To actually kill every cell phone or GPS in a large area you would need something so powerful it will simply kill all PEOPLE in that area also and you won't have to worry about it.

As for a solar flair, dude, please. A once in an epoch solar flair would take out power for a few weeks at most. There are cities in the US and Europe that go about that long without power because of bad winter weather. It's not going to end civilization. Especially since it will only be damaging the transmission of power, not the generation of it. You'll have guys running around in trucks for a few weeks replacing transformers, not riots in the streets. And as battery-backed solar becomes more and more common it will be less of an issue.

CME take place regularly, they are responsible for millions of dollars in damages to the power grid annually.

What you at home experience as a "power surge" is often caused by solar activity. Much more common in the tropics.

Large events are less common, but not unheard of. The sun is monitored constantly, and alarms are in place to give early warning so that power equipment can be shut down to reduce damage, but the warning is less that 8 minutes before the strikes occur.
