HD gets their hardware from Crown Bolt, which they now own. The shipment comes in once a week on 1-3 pallets including metal stock (I was at a high volume store). Those pallets are put out by MET once a week, same day every week, so you'd do well to ask the hardware guys what day that is and shop the later that day or the day after for maximum stock.

Sometimes, we'd have the pallet and show on-hands for an item but lie about it because it's a pain to hunt for a single pack of screws in that mess. Sometimes the store would do it but I have no idea how anyone convinced them.

We could return opened packs once a week and kept them in a box on top of the specialty drawers (other stores may hide it behind an endcap) in the meantime. You can get a lot of loose fasteners from there, just leave the bags and no one will care. We just throw it all away after all.
