2nd anon you replied to. I entered the JATC program as a first year with no construction/electrical experience and I was flat out told that I was hired because the shop owners were too cheap to pay a 2nd or 3rd year to haul demo'd lights and gopher material. It wasnt until my 2nd or 3rd week that I was being shown how to bend 90s and box offsets but I was still mainly on gopher and demo detail until about 1.5-2 months in.

I will say that a lot of it depends on who you end up working for/apprenticing under but if you show initiative and decent work ethnic then your j-man should be willing to teach you the basics when it comes to commercial. Like mine says, "the more you know how to do as an apprentice, the easier my job is". Yeah you basically have to be their bitch for 4-5 years until you get your ticket but theres a difference between being the guy they tell "hey go get me 100 feet of half inch pipe, 3 j-boxes, & some half inch connectors" or being the guy they tell "bend me a 10 inch 90 with a 5 inch offset 3 feet back". Sometimes you gotta be willing to put up with "*spits* hand me them there dikes boy" before you start getting into real electrical work though. At least that's how its been for me so far.

If you are working for me

1st little while digging, I do this so if you cant even do that you quit and dont waste my time... this maybe days or could be months, kind of depends on the job... currently I have been doing underground for about 6 weeks and its a medium sized jobs.. I'm still digging almost 15 years into the trade

or if no digging, probably getting parts for people, taking inventory. I do this so 1 you learn the parts, and 2 you get to see more of the job and realize that a lot of stuff is happening at once everywhere. Probably being taught by a second year who is about to move up.

Then after a few months I stick you with someone maybe doing some prefab or running easy stuff like power in a wall or pulling wire, maybe bending pipe.. still more grunt stuff but there is a ton to learn. It really depends on where I am at in the job..

Make sure your employer is getting you an apprenticeship card so the hours count towards your license. Find out what the laws are regarding electrical work in your area.

And yes expect to be yelled at and you are there to do grunt work because there is a ton of it to do and since its low skilled and you are low dollar you will do it.
