Useful, overpriced or both? Swiss army or Leatherman? Best models for camping or EDC? Is there one you would carry with you even along with regular tradesman's tools?

Skeletool is the only one I actually constantly have because of the clip saves either having to bother to put on a belt and sheath and keeps a boat anchor from being in my pockets.
Still have a Delica 4 but from a sheer practicality standpoint I'd just buy a snap of razor knife for 99% of cutting and use the leatherman knife for something like cutting rope.

I use to carry one because
>all doos tools in one!
Then I realized, even the best of the best, like multiple hundred ones, are worthless shit.
Sure you got blades and pillars, and wire cutters, and bits and yadda yadda all in one.
But they all suck compared to a real tool. The convince of it is meaningless.
>gee I need to snip this wire
>either I pull this thing out of my pocket/this pouch on my side
>get it open and sip the the wire so long as it's not thicker than 10awg
>or just drop my backpack, unzip it, and get my sips that causally eat through 4awg
Same thing with every tool that they can load in a multitool. They just suck and aren't worth carrying around. I'd rather keep a good flashlight on my hip. At least that is worthy of keeping handy.

This, unless you're going into the woods to larp like a survivalist with minimum gear a multi-tool is trash. Any handtool will out perform a multi-tool and 95% of the time you'll only use a tool at a job site or house. The other 5% of the time a simple knife would do the job you want.

They "legit" have the highest quality control of any knife maker, and have for over 100 years. Victorinox makes a model that is suited to pretty much anyone, and if you arent a huge larping faggot they are all you really need on an everyday basis.

I have used cheaper brands and they just don’t feel the same. If you’re gonna EDC the thing and use it daily, it’s worth spending the $90 on the tool that is far better quality with better ergonomics. You will make up for the extra $60 over a chink brand the first time the locking blade saves you from losing a finget.

>>1627304
Yes. See above. There’s a reason people refer to all multitools as “Leathermans”. I went through a lot of cheap ones before realizing why so many people spend the money. You don’t need a $200 model with tons of shit you never use, but the Wave is a really good tool to have around,

>>1627305
I like the Skeletool for fishing because all I really need is a pair of pliers and knife that are easy to use with one hand.

Most of the junk on a multi-tool is a poor imitation of a real tool, and is only there so they can claim 14 tools. I suppose in a dire emergency you might find some of them useful, but in general, real people use real tools, and larpers own multitools.

I carry and use a multitool. Without pliers you are losing a lot of utility so leatherman/swisstool>sak. ANY multitool is worse than a dedicated tool, BUT, and people ignore this when they go on multitools are shit rants, most of the tume you don't need to push a real tool to it's absolute limit, so a multitool is perfectly fine for a lot of situations. The ergonomics are worse, but the screw still gets screwed in, the wire gets cut, the nut tightened the sharp edge filed off. They work, the thing that needs accomplishing gets accomplished.

A wave or surge is overkill for most people though, a rebar or the old original leatherman tools take up less space and
accomplish the same stuff, the oversized and overprized ones are mostly gearfaggotry. Pliers, Philips head, scissors and knife are all you reasonably need.

Leatherman scissors are too thick for cutting nails, you can't get them up under the nail easily enough. Victorinox scissors are great for nails, though. Both kinds are also great for cutting small, thin wires that you don't need the normal wire cutters for, i.e. using the cutters to cut a piece of ethernet cable, then use the scissors to square off the twisted pairs inside.

30 year old boomer here. I've been carrying a skeletool cx around clipped to the inside of my back pocket for close to ten years. It's pretty fucking convenient. A lot of the tards itt think a multitool is somehow a tool replacement, it's not. It's something you have on you to use really quickly when you can't get another tool, or getting another tool would be a pain in the ass. It's for when you notice the screws are backing out on something so you fix it in ten seconds rather than putting it off and forgetting about it. It's for when you're doing a simple electrical job and you realize you need to do a three wire splice and you only have one pair of lineman's. It's for when a buddy is sitting there looking like a retard trying to open something, and you say "I got this". It's for when you're sitting around a fire and someone brings out a few beers, but no opener.
Often it works really well for simple crap. I've got a good eye for knowing if I can do it with the multitool or not. Early on, I'd sit there struggling with it trying to do something it can't accomplish. Don't do that. The proper tool makes all the difference. The multitool is for when you're caught with your pants around your ankles, dick in hand, going "aw fuck, I don't have the [whatever tool], but I can cheat it".
I also carry around a ZebraLight sc62w, and it gets more use than the skeletool by a factor of two. If you don't have a good pocket light, get one.

a multi-tool is a very situational piece of equipment. it seems like all the fags hating on them in this thread dont understand what multi-tools' purpose is. my leatherman does not replace my tool box. its augments what i can do with my bare hands. and depending on what im doing that day i will carry a different tool. when i help my friend with his landscaping gig i carry my wave, because i usually need either a knife, pliers, wire cutters, or a saw at every job. it doesnt stay in the case for more than 40 minutes at any time. at my r4eal job (county park) i carry a small SAK. the blade, saw, and screw drivers are the most useful.
its not practical to carry around a tool belt or a tool bag for most people most of the time. if its your profession to fix machines or maintain a location they you should have every dedicated tool you will reasonably need. but for the average person its nice to have a few accessible tools in your pocket. fuck, even the Roman soldiers had a multi-tool. this is not a new concept

having a good wood saw in your pocket at all times working in a park is great. and the victorinox wood saw really is great
>mostly-redundant openers/drivers
not redundant at all. redundant means multiple tools doing the same thing. bottle opener is not only wider, but also thicker, meaning it can be used for light prying, scraping and larger flat tipped screws, and the can opener has a more narrow and thin edge, useful for phillips head
>some kind of hook
yeah what the fuck, whos carrying around parcels tied with twine anymore? i cant justify the hook

A butterfly may bore an ox, whose fortes are strength and duty;
A guy and gal a perfect fit hold love ‘gainst drum and fife;
But Wenger and Victorinox give function form, with beauty,
And when it’s time to pack my kit there’s a Swiss Army Knife.

Some have a sharp machete for clearing branchy glade;
Some hang a panga from their belt for general-purpose work;
A Gurkha has his kukhri, the Marine his fighting blade;
But the Swiss Knife is more useful than a scimitar or dirk.

A hammer’s good for nails of course; a shovel: dirt and snow and hail;
A chair and broom enough for some to bring in naughty lions;
A cowboy’s hat can water horse; a lady’s purse is more than style;
A book may hold a bookshelf up; a blanket: wear or lie on.
But sleeps in pocket: shoes, lunch, haircut, a mirror true on life -
There is one tool that does it all: it’s a Swiss Army Knife.

>its not practical to carry around a tool belt or a tool bag for most people most of the time.

Of course its not practical, because there isnt actually a need or use for tools in the vast majority of everyone life. Which is the exact reason that carrying a multi tool is fucking stupid.
When there is a need, you are either close to a toolbox, or you know without a doubt what tools you might actually need so you carry them.

>when i help my friend with his landscaping gig i carry my wave, because i usually need either a knife, pliers, wire cutters, or a saw at every job.

So you know for a fact you need a small handful of tools when you work with this particular fellow. And with this knowledge, you refuse to carry proper tools and would rather fumble around with a shitty multi tool?

>at my r4eal job (county park)

Too lazy to carry a very small toolbag in your fucking golf cart?

> it seems like all the fags hating on them in this thread dont understand what multi-tools' purpose is.

Nobody has every actually justified it.
Its always for some nonexistent "emergency" or out of sheer laziness to use a proper tool.
Saying that it "its augments what i can do with my bare hands" is not justification, thats just defining what a "tool" is.

>this is what the Swiss actually believe
I’ve owned multitools ftom SOG, Leatherman, Gerber, Victorinox, and some cheap Chinese ones.
The Victorinox tools had the highest quality control of all the tools, with the exception of the pliers, which were a bit less precise than the pliers on the Leathean and SOG tools.
The small implements on the Victorinox knives are almost always better designed and better made than on the other brands. The only major exception was the diamond file on the Leatherman, which ironically is made for Leatherman in Switzerland.
As for small tools, SOG came out second and that was because SOG mostly copied the Victorinox components.
Leatherman and Gerber have some interesting and possibly better features, like the interchangeable sayblades, the bit holder on the Lerman, and the cutter inserts, but the quality of the other components is usually lacking.
Victorinox also has the best ergonomics of the various tools, with SOG second.
Leatherman tools could tear the flesh of your hand because of bad ergonomics.
The new Leatherman FREE tools may change things.

I have a classic sd victorinox that i've had for years. love the little guy. the durability is really admirable. it's still in great functional condition and hasn't rusted despite not taking great care of it. Compare that to the leatherman ps i got recently that already has a chipped and bent file. The metal victorinox uses seem really very good as is the build quality. just wish there were more stockists where i live.

As for multitools in general, the strongest argument against them is "i have a better tool for the job". That's a fine argument, but for those of us who like the idea of multitools--those of us who are interested in and want to use them--it's worth the modest investment. It's a hobby like anything else. If multitools appeal to you, go ahead and buy one or two. There's far worse things you can spend your money on, just get a decent quality one like the Leatherman Wave+ or Rebar (or Supertool/Surge for people with larger hands). Can't really go wrong with any of the victorinox pocket knives.

It's not like having a multitool is going to keep you from buying a saw or a screw driver or utility knife or pliers. The multitool is really just for convenience and pleasure. If you get in the habit of putting one in your pocket and run into a situation where you need a tool, it's really nice to have, especially if you're a young guy and don't have an organized shop or tool box.

The Rebar and Wave are about the same size iirc. The Surge is basically a larger version of the Wave, the Supertool basically a larger version of the Rebar.

>most of the tume you don't need to push a real tool to it's absolute limit, so a multitool is perfectly fine for a lot of situations
There's also a lot to be said about using a quality but less than perfect tool for a job. It forces you to really pay attention to how you're using the tool so you can get the best out of it in the situation. Sometimes it just feels nice to do the job with what you have on hand instead of being like "Let me get my tools, I must have my tools"

If the Rebar had scissors instead of a silly lanyard loop, I'd trade my Charge for it in an instant.
