I'm invested into the milwaukee m18 and m12 tool line but I am afraid 10 years down the line, they would discontinue or change the battery interface that my tools don't work, does anyone else have the same concern?

They will sell the old batteries and they will sell adapters. Or you can regret not buying Ryobi. I think Ridgid did a pretty good job with battery compatibility too, the Li-Ions fit the old NiCd tools.

I mostly feel bad for the guys who got sucked into pic related. Those batteries and tools are all really expensive now too if you need to replace something and all of the M28 tools have been surpassed by newer M18 Fuel tools. You will still be able to find batteries though.

Makita did a retarded thing though, they had a 12V li-ion line with the barrel batteries like M12, and it didn’t last long before being replaced by a new 12v sliding pack like DeWalt’s.

wouldnt worry about batteries...
if you are actually using them in a real work capacity you get about 2-3 years out of the tools themselves. Even with their highest end line "Fuel" mine get broken and abused into the garbage in just a few years, new drill and sawzall every 2 years.

Yea, I don't buy any battery tools outside of drill.
Even my Makita drill batteries aren't holding charge like they used to, they're already outdated so I'll have to get a whole new drill soon.
Commercial work is going to be different but for home use, I'll always get corded

Nobody seems to regret buying Ryobi either. Tons of people on here own them and even people who work in the trades and have higher end tools at work say the Ryobi stuff kicks ass for home and will even survive a few weeks on the jobsite while their Makita stuff is getting serviced.

More like 6 years old but they're surpassed by lithium which is what's stocked exclusively now, next gens will also be purposely incompatible.
If all my tools were cordless and I had to replace them now after 6 years it would be a better financial option to start buying $20 power tools.
I'm not a tradie and when decent tools are $300-400ea it's thousands of dollars.

Ryobi has had the same battery pack design since 1996 and is committed to never changing the style.
Original batteries and tools were NiCad powered but the new Li-Ion batteries fit and work fine in the old tools.
Worst case, have to buy a new charger because lithium batteries require more monitoring during charging.

Did you buy them on clearance at a deep discount and then get pissed that your outdated tech was outdated when you got it?

One of our fleet mechanics is rocking an old blue Ryobi drill too and it’s still going strong.

Enough? Like contractors driving hundreds of screws a day and dropping the drills off roofs multiple times a day and getting pissed that it broke on the 236th fall?

Of everybody I’ve heard talk about the Ryobi tools they actually own, nobody has regretted having them in their garage. It’s like the people in the multitool thread, the only ones who shit on Leathermans are the ones who have never owned one.

I used my ryobi one+ set professionally for years. But I do data installs so I can't say it it was used very hard daily. They've since been retired to home use. Which it's great for since their lineup is very home owner oriented. My personal favorite is the weed whacker.

Switched to Dewalt 20v XR for work because they have a bandsaw. Don't regret it. Extremely powerful drills. I can make 2" penetrations through core filled cinder block in half the time compared to Ryobis hammer drill.

As for Leatherman...I own the 300 EOD and I felt it didn't hold up as well as the price might make you expect. Broke it multiple times.

As battery tech changes, as long as they can still produce it in an 18650 form factor, they will considering it powers just about everything with a li+ battery these days from tools to cars to vapes

the only time it will change is when they find a better design for battery>tool interface which probably wont be substantial enough to warrant a redesign for a long time

Precisely, everyone is dumping money into making lithium better, nobody wants to gamble a billion dollars and 10 years of time on an unknown and potentially unsuccessful battery chemistry.
Lithium is the sure shot right now.

And since lithium is the most energy-dense element for making batteries, a substantial improvement would actually involve something other than a battery, like an air fuel cell or a gigantic improvement in capacitors.
