1621724 No.1621724 [Reply] [Original]

I intend to establish a floating hamster colony in the sky, suspended by helium, which a passenger drone can deliver the hamsters to one at a time. The transport drone is largely sorted (see pic)

The structure of the colony itself is also mostly finished. I have a single 7 foot diameter balloon but have thought better of it, since if it bursts, the entire thing plummets to Earth.

I was thinking of switching to a cluster of much cheaper 3ft diameter party balloons. Is there increased reliability concern here? Is the volume decrease from one large balloons to several small ones burdensomely steep?

The other issues are drone related. How to stably suspend a large enough rigid surface from a balloon (or balloon cluster) stable enough to land a drone on for example. How to keep the fishing lines coming from the corners spaced far enough apart so the drone props don't get tangled up in them. Whether inductive charging a drone from flexible solar panels on the balloon(s) is feasible.

Lastly, is there a premade remote control payload release mechanism for drones, that would spare me from having to 3D print one and learn mechatronics? The leg extensions existed already as a consumer product for like $7.

I am glad I checked before spending $50 to get a set printed by Shapeways. Is there similarly a premade mechanism for remotely dropping what the drone is carring, or opening the door on the passenger capsule?

Funny seeing this here, I heard about you on The Dick Show lol.

Honestly, does it need to actually float or are you ok with just suspending it? If you hang it from balloons, you're going to have to tether it to the ground anyway to keep it from flying away in a strong breeze.

If you're dead set on it flying, you might want to look into active support. Basically if you shoot water up at it constantly in just the right way it'll float on that. The costs to keep the pumps running might be less than the helium costs anyway, and you can vary the height of it just buy turning the pump power up or down.

Yes. Also all balloons will leak, but party balloons will leak more.
>stably suspend a surface
Don't make it too light and don't have too many balloons or wind will fuck you up. As to how to phisically land on it, you just need to attach some vertical aluminum bars to the cage and tying your balloons there instead of directly in the corners of the cage. Then practice landing under a chair in a windy day and you'll be golden.
>charging the drone
Don't park the drone there, have it come down to recharge. You need power to keep the hamsters warm.

>premade control payload
You can't use a commercial drone anyway (would be way too expensive to get one that suits your needs, but if you really want to do it look for one that accepts accessories or has lights you can turn on and off, which means there's at least 1 extra channel you can modify for use ), and while choosing the remote for your diy one make sure it has a couple of extra channels. Look for flysky fs i6s chink knockoff or something, should set you back 50 dollars for transmitter and receiver and has 10 channels.
You will need to make a custom delivery system anyway, but when you have the receiver is just a matter of hooking up a couple of wires.
There are plenty of guides on the internet on how to build a drone.

Btw you might be better off using small custom built hot hair balloons hooked up to an ardupilot board, so you can regulate altitude and the autopilot takes care of staying where you want it.
Also consider the legality of having heavy equipment fly, nobody gives a shit about hampture failing, but you Columbiham flying city crashing down in someone's head might have you in a pinch.

I currently am too lazy to pull out my laptop and show off the designs, so i'm gonna pull it from the one image I posted on Twitter.
It uses a 38mm reloadable motor, with 2 centering rings and a bulkhead at the engine to separate the payload chamber from the engine. It uses an altimeter with a magnetic apogee detector for redundancy and a small black powder charge to deploy the parachute. Inside the payload chamber will be lots of cushioning and sound dampening foam, with a single hamster friend inside.

Are you legit autistic? I don't say this to wholly be a dick, just out of ignorance, but a lot of your old comics are really funny and I didnt know autists could work that way, I guess?

Also can't believe I never connected your art style to this comic, was one of the earliest things I read on /x/ (when /x/ was still good) and I loved it.

I don't mean to burst your bubble, as it were, Father of Hamsters, but we are experiencing a global shortage of helium. Turns out all those Chipmunk Holiday albums had rather horrific consequences. This leaves your plot for a Hampster Castle in the Sky at an impasse, I'm afraid. Luckily we here on /diy/ are actual no-joke super geniuses. Here are your options.

Option 1: Build a giant vacuum cleaner in orbit, then send it toward the sun. If you do it right, it should be able to harvest all the helium you need from the sun. If you successfully complete this option, you will probably stop caring about airborne rodents as every engineer on earth will be lined up to suck your tiny little pee-pee. You will also become richer than God.

Option 2. This is a good one. You're gonna have to generate a shit ton of hydrogen. Luckily, dihydrogen monoxide is far more plentiful on earth than helium, and all you need to do is apply a current to that shit to free the hydrogen from it's aqueous prison. Electrolysis they call it, I think. Okay. So now you're putting your hampsters to work, spinning turbines and generators and making that sweet sweet hydrogen. Easy, huh? Well, now you gotta put that hydrogen into something that makes those airborne rodents float. This might be the time to remind you of the Hindenburg. Don't let that disaster discourage you tho. Didn't I tell you that /diy/ is populated by genuine, no joke super geniuses? Check this shit out: PUT THE HYDROGEN INTO THOUSANDS OF PARTY BALLOONS. That way if one or two of them explode, you don't get a Hamsterburg. Extra points for using a durable material for your hydrogen balloons. I suggest hamster-shaped aluminum, or 3-d printed feline-shaped carbon nano-tubes if you're feeling cheeky.

Nevar forget that great men are not defined by their dreams, but by how much they can accomplish before they get shot by some no-fun-allowed beady-eyed little hater.

If extended use of electric energy is an option (i.e. we're gonna be running a sizable battery bank) why not run a hair dryer into a hot air balloon? I feel that may be more energy efficient (and safe) for a ballast than running/refilling hydrogen into party balloons. It also has the advantage that you don't have to run several lines to an air tank. Personally I'd have a ring structure for your habitat (big plastic loop), with a central hot air balloon/power bank, and use electric motors to drive a series of propellers outside of the loop (stability/steering).

Kickstarter has a guarantee policy. The creator starts by making a promise. The money must be spent exclusively on creating the promised good or service. You get exactly what is promised, or else they give you the money back. Period. Anything less is actionable.

Patreon, it's a subscription, but there's no legal guarantee, no enforcement, and no oversight, because each creator will have different reward tiers. Partially because it was explicitly created with helping creators pay their bills while still creating. As long as they're able to deliver their membership rewards to a quality that satisfies their subscribers, it doesn't matter what happens to the money. And if you aren't satisfied, all you can do is ask for a refund on your current month's pay (subject to creators approval, but appealable to Patreon, though you'd need a very solid case) and cancel your membership.

Op, i'm assuming your balloon would be tethered? If so, how high are you planning on putting it, and are you planning on grounding it during high winds or storms?

As far as the release mechanism for the drones goes, it is pretty easy to bind servos to any extra channels you may have on your radio and you could always use one to release a latch holding a trapdoor closed on the bottom of a small section of pvc pipe or a small box. For hamster safety it may also help to install another camera and vtx facing downward to help land and safely release your payload.
