does anyone have any guides on how to do this? All I went to do is shred my own trash and compact it into cubes so I can fit it all into a small garbage can. Can I just use a standard woodchipper, assuming I don't feed any metals into it?

Get a case of beer and a buddy with a pickup truck and go down to your nearest yuppie neighborhood in the city and pick up a couple of these.

already stolen it's why I currently use my big machine at work, but I won't have access to it in the near future

NO

wood chippers use knives that spin very fast.

no need to shred, this is exactly what kitchen trash compactors do. My local craigslist has two for sale one for $30 and one for $50.

one of your biggest problems you should think about will be the smell. if you shred trash containing different organic compounds they will stick inside and start to smell very bad. there will be a lot of cleaning work, and even than you would not get all the parts complete clean
