I actually have been pretty good. I went on a little spree like a year ago but I haven’t bought anything big in a couple months. Just looked at Amazon and I spent like $120 on the scan tool 2 months ago, only other thing between then and now was the Gearwrench hose pliers but I had a free $25 gift card and only paid like $30. Oh and then I caught a screaming deal on this lithium jumper pack a few days ago ($70 normally, flash sale for $50 plus another free gift card and only paid $25) but I think I’m going to give it to my mom because I gave the GF one a few months back and she was jealous. I really want to keep the thing for myself but I have jumper cables and won’t be afraid to ask a stranger for help, she would panic if she left her lights on and couldn’t start her car.

Also I have had my eye on this impact wrench since before Christmas but they never had a good deal on the thing aside from buying a big set and getting it as a free tool. Right now they have a deal where you get a free tool if you buy that Octane battery set (6Ah, 3Ah, charger, nice bag) for $180. I was still on the fence until I was leaving work today and telling my boomer woodworking coworker about it and he was like “Go! Just go buy the thing!”

What are you planning on buying?

I just put my old corded one up on sale. Was my first impact wrench and I was amazed how much time they save. Literally any job where you need to jack the car up and take off the wheels, the impact wrench will save you half an hour compared to cracking the nuts loose on the ground with a breaker bar, jacking it up, and then going back with a ratchet to finish taking them off.

I would definitely recommend the Porter Cable if you’re on a budget. It’s not 1000ft-lbs powerful like the Earthquake or big Milwaukee-DeWalts, but it pops off nuts that took my ass hanging off a 24” breaker bar. Plus some parts aren’t so tight that you don’t have the torque with hand tools, but they don’t come off well with the steady pressure from a breaker bar yet the impact will shake them loose in a couple seconds. I think Amazon sells them for $80, but I got mine at Advance Auto because you can order online with the 25% off coupon and snag it for $75 and pick it up at the store like 20min after you pay online.

I'm not entirely sure. I watched a video of a guy taking off his rotors and he used something like pic related.
I really should just get my compressor working so I could get an air ratchet or something. It was my grandpa's and the part where you attached the hose was all nigger-rigged so it needs replacing.

Is it a screw? Then grab one of those things. Lowe’s sells (or sold?) a Kobalt branded one for like $15, the same exact tool is sold under a bunch of different brands in different packaging, the auto parts store sells one in a Lisle package for $35. Just checked Lowe’s, got replaced by the Craftsman for $5 more.

Those are popular for the brake rotor screws, may be better for your use than an impact wrench/driver because it drives the bit down into the screw while turning it. Less chance of stripping it out. Lowe’s actually has it in the automotive section.

I actually cleaned it up a little because it was greasy and I want to sell the thing since I have too many tools around my garage that I don’t use. This pic was before I scrubbed it.

I also don’t use the thing in a shop so I maybe have a car in my garage once every month or two to do a little work, it’s not like the impact had hundreds of hours on it. I’m trying to find the kid who likes to change his own oil but didn’t think he could afford more than the Husky socket set. I’m always amazed how much time power tools save, that thing will save you at least an hour on any project where you need to take all 4 wheels off the car just because you don’t have to fuck with the breaker bar on 20+ nuts and then jack the car up and use the ratchet on another 20+ nuts and then do the same thing in reverse when you’re done.

What puller brand ya using? I believe I have wheel bearings or hubs coming up in the near future and almost ordered a slide hammer set. There’s a handful of ~$60 kits with decent reviews but I think this OTC kit is the way to go.

oh, and another thing. I realize you go to HF every week if not more often, but a year or two ago when I last went there, there automotive tools like that are better than anything you'll find on the internet, mainly because heavy. But that was 2 or 3 years ago, so maybe the info is dated.

Man I haven’t even had the time to bullshit around the garage. Had to spend the weekend with various mothers and I haven’t been spending much on the small bullshit, that impact wrench was the only thing big I bought in a couple months.

>>1609294
And the HF set is like $70 and looks like the $60-$70 sets on Amazon. It looks like the same Chinesium as pic related which is the 8pc set. There are 9pc sets with another one of those things the jaws hook onto and they’re like $80. I think it’s the front hub puller that makes the difference. You can see where pic related even has the slot for the 9th piece.

The OTC set is the 9pc one and has much better reviews considering it’s only $20-$30 more than the 9pc sets that are probably only good for a couple hard uses.

You should snag some of the CVS totes. They’re blue square plastic totes and are pretty damn strong and they fold down flat so you can store like 20 empty ones in a stack 3ft high.

Can’t find a good pic online, but they always leave them out behind the stores. They’re the big blue ones in this blurry pic. They stack on eachother and there’s these little blue roller carts that are 2 boxes wide so you could easily roll around 8 or 10 boxes full of shit from the van to the job.

>> No.1611206

>>1611194

I don't really like fold down - they gaps where screws and the like can roll out. Mine I can safely drop all sorts of small shit into and be sure it stays in there. I do have a couple of stack-inside-each-other ones, though. Best of both worlds, really.
