one time a guy i work with whose a total fucking mess left an unused air line strung out across one of the bays. literally unplugged his tool and just dropped the air line and walked over/stepped on it for like 4 days before he finally fucking reeled it up. its on a reel for fuck sakes come on. usually ill just clean it/reel it up and go on with my day just because i like shit to be tidy but this time i left it just to see and holy fuck

I had 2 good controllers, 2 good motors, rebuilt the battery packs of 2 old non working memeboards and had a 500w dual motor board for 250$. The only thing that really pissed me off about this project was that the remotes would NOT link to both boards simultaneously, so I taped them together until I can run the communication line. Problem is the 2nd board doesn't fit in the original housing, so I have to protect the wiring real well underneath the board, and it's proving to be more hassle than it's worth. I'm going to start over with wider trucks, dual motor on rear axles, one controller.

I also built batteries for other boring crap, but all of my cells are recycled from laptops and I swear I find a new dead cell every time I go to my stash.

Charging li ions is simple, I still don’t understand lead acids. This thing seems to dip down close to 10v so not sure if it’s a dead cell and I will blow it up at 14v or what. That’s why I’m only charging it at 500mA though.

If it has a dead cell, the other 5 will still put out some decent current or no? The original youtube vid I saw had the guy recommending a ~100cca battery to spot weld those strips so I was hoping this dumpster battery would maybe do that. I think that I ran 10AWG or 12AWG to those little nails and I put it through a relay that was rated at 40A so who the fuck knows.

When I originally tried it with no relay or switches and just a couple short lengths of wire, it blew holes through the nickel. When I put everything together with more wire, it took like 1.5sec to start melting it with some random bits of metal.

One day I'd like to get it cleaned out but it's so disgustingly daunting. I really want to make it into a workshop with some storage or something upstairs but Christ almighty. Some of you might remember this one. I got it for cheap with a bucket of drill bits and such. It has a Craftsman "Vari-Slo" speed control system on and an x-y table of unknown manufacture. Only had the need to use it a few times since I got it but it was very handy when I did and well worth the $100 I paid for it.

17 inch DP-600. This is my main drill press because it has a head height adjustment. The Buffalo has a tapping attachment on it.because it is the most rigid DP I own and taking it off is a pain. So, it gets used less often.

Murderers row. Back when I was a poor college student I picked these little guys up for between $30 and $45 each, mostly because they came with tooling/drill bits. I used the middle one as my first grinder. The bandsaw in the back was part of a package deal I couldn't pass up but honestly, it is too small to be that useful.

That's just a selection of the stuff that is easy to access. I have a Unisaw table saw that is being used more as a table than saw at the moment. I also have a 6 inch Rockwell/Delta planer that's super buried in the back. My woodworking stuff doesn't see too much use these days. I do have a shed project in the works so that will change. I also have a number of quite useable professional grade vintage tools I've picked up and restored. Some nice drills, a beast of a belt sander, electric screwdriver with 3/8th in square drive. That kind of thing. And grinders. Lots of grinders. Can't ever have enough grinders (or clamps). I hate changing the media on 'em so when I see one cheap I just buy it and put my next least used whatever on it. I mostly use grinding discs but every now and then I need a wheel, sanding disc, or a cup or something and it is easier to just plug in a new tool then find my wrench and switch shit out, fuck with the guard, etc.

I do have an old Craftsman wood lathe but no metal lathe. I haven't been able to find one locally that wasn't $500+ and I am not going to buy some POS 'midi' lathe from China. Strangely, things like drill presses and band saws pop up all the time for pretty cheap but rarely any lathes and even more rarely metal lathes. I have seen exactly one mill that wasn't either Chinese or industrial sized sell in this area and it went for $600 even missing parts. If I really need a lathe for something I just have the local college make something for me.

I would start with just a cutter in the spindle though, the overarm is nice too, but I have never actually used a horizontal and my boner for horizontal boring mill type work is intense.

here's a pic of a few of my Huot boxes. Damn nice they are for cheaply organizing cutters. Still need to figure out which reamer box I want, and where to put a Silver and Deming (reduced shank drill bits) box. As I understand it most folks on /diy/ don't actually use their tools, so I'm sure no one cares, but being able to quickly and easily find the right drill bit size I want (and how many spares I have) makes it a lot more fun to do prototyping stuff. Also notice the decimal equivalent for each size is printed on the labels as well.

I have to say, clear ridge caps on the old barn make for damn nice natural lighting during the day as well.

Seeing all those drill bits is making me green with envy. I need some drawers and lots of tooling but I have a problem.

While I was working for the machine sales group, they picked up a vertical mill from a school and they're going to sell it second hand. I could get a tool chest and some tools to go in it or I could get the final piece I need to complete my machine set. Where I live these sorts of machines are very difficult to come by, especially in the condition it's in which makes it really hard to decide which choice is best.

I'm leaning towards getting the mill because it's a once-every-5/10-year opportunity but the tools will always be available to some degree.

Pic related is the smaller brother of the mill. The one that I'm looking at is the same design but scaled up by about 2. Also it's green like all my other machines so the temptation is very strong.

When you run a machine shop taps and drills are basically consumables.
If he has jobs every day those taps will be worn out long before they have any effect rubbing on each other.

Even then, using the things puts far more wear on them than bumping each other in the drawer will.

Kek, I don’t even know exactly what it is because it’s upstairs in the back. It runs the oil guns and has no problem with the 1” impact. It’s loud but most tools only make it run for 15sec to refill and it’s in another room.

I was just thinking it would be fun to steal the air system off a semi truck and build a compressor with that using a 110/220v motor. They normally have 2 or 3 5-10gal tanks and will pump up to ~125psi and then the compressor kicks in again around 100psi. Running at cruise RPM, it will build pressure from 100psi to 125psi in 10sec.

a lot more trouble than its worth

truck compressors are gear driven by the clockwork, lubricated by engine oil, cooled by the trucks cooling system, and the supplied air comes from the charged intake air.

not to mention their duty cycle is surprisingly low, as truck air systems (assuming no hydraulic over air) only use lots of air in stop and go traffic or turning around/pulling in, that type of thing
