>have a macbook with a bastard shitfuck asshole piss battery in it
>im fine having it rely on ac power, but
>macbooks have this amazing usability feature where they turn on as soon as you plug them in, even if the lid is closed
>battery in it isn't good enough to power the laptop on immediately, so it tries to boot, runs out of juice, tries to boot again, etc...
can i connect the laptop to an external power bank that i build myself?
it doesn't need to fit inside the laptop. i can keep it connected with wires.
fuck buying an actual replacement battery.

How old? I thought Macboks all used usb-c for charging. Get a usb-c powerbank.

2014 i think. its plenty fast enough to continue using. it has been a faithful component of my digital audio workstation

Google tells me that model still uses the magsafe charger. Those run at 20 volts and I think require some kind of coms between the charger and laptop to work.

If so the simplest way would be a car adapter attached to 4 18650 cells. The car adapter would have the chip needed to talk to the laptop and be able to handle the wide voltage range of the 4 cells. Only think you'd have to worry about is over discharging the cells. You could get away with using only 3 cells but over discharging would be much more likely.

MacBooks have weird-shaped Li-po batteries, so you can't replace internal battery with something more skookum.
>it doesn't need to fit inside the laptop. i can keep it connected with wires.
Oh, never mind.
If you have older MacBook with magsafe, you can just cut wire from any charger, and supply 16-20 volts.
With USB-Cloaca stuff is slightly different, charger have some smarts in it, which adjust output voltage after being connected.

Batteries werent glued back then, maybe you should just install new one? Macs have OK battery life, while they are new

Anyway, which model do you have?

>charging via the magsafe port

no. i can plug it into the wall. that's not what im after. the problem is described in the op. it needs current supplied from the battery

since the battery is no good, it won't start with the ac current. its retarded as fuck but i guess the macbook is a shitty unsustainable design

I mean shitty for you, but then you have to buy a new one so great for apple.

You can buy a replacement battery from China without too many issues. I would be tempted to build something to supply power from the mains through the battery connection. A good guy to check out is Louis Rossman as he and the little community he's built online have reverse engineered a lot of apple laptop shit, so some good knowledge.

This.
What model do you have? It is 10 seconds job, that even complete retard can do.

excellent. this is exactly the kind if solution i'm looking for. i'll definitely checkem

Check your battery connector pinout. Most Macbook batteries have a 9pin connector being either 3x+12V,SMC+,SENSE,SMC-,3xGND or +12V and ground swapped in order. In theory you could supply that +12V externally(via a wall wart) but I have no idea about the SMC+/- and SENSE signals. Your custom 12v supply has to supply enough current for your mac to power on and probably be as smooth as possible. There might be some more information online.

Just go to any repair place and grab a cheap used battery, should be able to get one in good enough shape to get you a few more years use for little cash and no fucking about.

This is like the number one laptop problem. Unplug/cut battery cable and it will bypass and use AC power. I have done this many times but not on Mac. Use AC power and order new battery (it's like $50)
