She knew that her MFA had value, but not enough to pay the rent. She signed up with the Ironworkers and went through their training. She was the only one in her training group to show up every day. She'd stay in the shop for hours outside of class practicing. She passed every procedure, every position that she was tested on the first time. After she got her apprentice card, she kept learning other procedures. She became the only Ironworker in the hall who was certified in every pre-qualified procedure. She signed up for every hour she could get in the field - weekends, holidays, whatever. She's single and lives alone, so work was all she did. She socked away all her money. After 4 years, by which time she was a Journeyman in high demand, she bought a house. I mean, she found a house and wrote a check for it. She was 28. That was 4 years ago, and she's still cranking out the hours. Since she's small, she can get in a lot of spots where a 52-year-old fat fuck can't.

But, like I said, she's the unicorn.

I was on a piling job in Illinois for 3 months last year. The piling contractor had a young girl who as an Ironworker. Cute. Nice fat ass. The only thing I ever saw her do was work the pendant for the hammers. That's it. She never swept, put away welding rigs, did any rigging, or anything else even remotely Ironworker-y. Couldn't handle installation physically and didn't have the brains to do controls or service. The reason they get a bad rap is because the majority of bad ones are given too much leeway compared to guys, few are interested and even fewer of those are actually realistic in their expectations of the work or estimations of their own abilities. Refusing to do XYZ = thinking they can't when they might actually be able to but have learned to avoid potentially uncomfortable work by just having someone else do it. And a lot of people are willing to oblige because they either treat the women like children out of a misplaced sense of "doing the right thing" or are scared of getting fired by HR or sued by activists and unions.

trades are mostly lower to lower/middle class. They don't require college education, and most people who end up in a trade do so because of lack of options. When you are looking at options that men have at that class-level, women just have different options. A good 50% of those options are family/kid related.

Most people who end up in a trade grew up with some sort of experience working with tools. Women most likely spent more time dealing with kids, cooking, housekeeping, or other non "heavy labor" jobs. So when you come out of highschool and need to earn money - what makes the most sense? Working a shit retail job, or a summer job working on roofs? Keeping the kid, or becoming an electrician - something you have exactly zero knowledge about.

Socially, women are also going to be pushed into different careers as their fallback. I mean you'd have to be fucking insane as 18 year old woman to go hang out with a construction crew or whatever. Anyone who thinks there isn't a "boys club", should encourage their teenage daughter to get into a trade. You'll get #woke pretty fast. She'll have to work twice as hard to get promoted, she'll spend all day getting hit on, or shit on. And no one will ever take direction from her.

I don't know about your personal experiences, but mine are that most of the people who work in the trades don't do it because they lack options, it's just the most common sense and best one. Everyone I work with makes over six figures a year with overtime, are protected by a union, and when we aren't busy spend most of our time on YouTube or some such. Granted, my position now is very favorable but even before then everyone who came from their various trades like boilermaker, Millwrights, ironworker, etc made pretty good money. Like 70k a year. And a lot of those guys spent months of their year off to do whatever they wanted. Like my fiance is super fucking jealous of me because she has a finance degree and works for this pretty large and successful company. However, she works a shit ton of hours, non overtime of course, and makes only about 85k a year. And she's almost working non-stop when she's actually on the clock. in contrast I could be working for 12 hours a day for 6 days a week, but I'm only actually working maybe seven of those hours with all the breaks we have or downtime between stopping points.

I work extensively with my local construction trade unions. I would say that in general, their membership is about 1 woman to 50 or 100 men. They aren't necessarily discriminating, the union wants the most diverse workforce they can get. I expect their applicant pool might be 1 in 300 or 400. I've worked with women on job sites here in Austin. There is a huge push for women to enter trade schools for diversity reasons. We have a few at our union, but they're very rare. I'll see one or two every so often that are actually field workers.

I had one that was a huge lesbian that was my fitter. Best fitter I've ever had honestly. Personality wise she was God awful, but it was nice to have a skilled person working with me.

I've had another that was the worst appearance in the history of apprenticeships. She would constantly text on a jobsite and would wear non steel toed boots regularly, even after being called out on it. She had a w10 kicker fall on her foot. I started by learning welding at a local trade school. I think it was a 4 month program. Afterwards, got a welding/fabrication gig at a local place through a staffing agency. Got experience and left after a couple of years. Basically did that a couple times until I got my position now.

My current job is a result of the following various things I learned in addition to welding. Using powertools, shop tools, overhead cranes, forklifts, industry safety standards, equipment alignment, proper inspections, types and uses for gaskets, types and uses for lubricants, mechanical seals, etcetc. Most of which I learned on the job.

The people I know in the same position came from their specific trades such as, Millwrights, Boilermakers, Ironworkers, Pipefitters, Diesel Mechanics, and I can't think of the other guys.

That first job started of at $16 a hour as a temp. $20 once I was full-time. Once I felt I learned enough I moved to a new place and got a pay increase with each move. The final place I work at was also a company I contracted for in the past, much like the other guys I work with.

So basically learn as much as you can, get pay increases with each move, don't be afraid to travel, and try to get into a good union.

When I worked as a telecom install and repair tech our pole-testing equipment wasn't exactly specific. Like, I had a "voltage detector" and it often gave false alarms, but we had no other means of checking them. Most of the guys would just climb anyways and ignore the warning, and all the older guys would tell you the tool was useless and oversensitive.

I could absolutely see erring on the side of caution.

Getting women in the workplace was and is a good idea. Letting half of the natural talent in the world do nothing but pump out babies and low-skill housework, when technology allowed them to actually contribute that talent to the world, would have been a disaster that no one noticed. So much wouldn't have gotten done, just because we wouldn't have the hands or brains we needed to do it.

The problem is that until we figure out how to stop giving women the easy out, the option of never improving themselves beyond their looks, we're suffering a similar tragedy. So many people that could have done so many things, wasted. And those people often end up miserable for it.

Having women fully integrated into the workplace costs billions upon billions in lost productivity.
