1556168 No.1556168 [Reply] [Original]

I want to do a lot of things like weld and build shit but I live in a 1 bedroom apartment with my wife and have no space to do anything. Not even allowed to work on my car in the parking lot (was doing it for a while but some cunt complained and the owner had words with me).

What options do I have if I want to build stuff? I was thinking about getting a HF oxy acetylene welding kit but I just have nowhere to use it.

Was thinking about getting a storage unit and just going to town in there but wanted to see if you guys had any ideas.

It sounds like what you really want is out of your marriage; because no married man wants to do any of that, because you do that to either earn money or attract a mate, and if you already have one then you shouldn't voluntarily want to do it.

Just man up and tell her already.

Why wouldn't you want to learn how to weld? Are you a filthy faggot or something?

Sounds like your place is for assholes, find somewhere else to live. You don't have much choice but to rent a unit in the mean time.

>oxy acetylene
>weld
nobody welds with oxy acetylene anymore except coachbuilders and even most of them use tig at this point.
Oxy acetylene is used for cutting, soldering, brazing and general heating/bending.
You want a mig/tig, I recommend the multimatic 215, it'll have you covered for everything except aluminum.

Got a balcony? That's where I do my messy apartment DIYing

It may not seem like it, but not everyone here is gay.

This desu. Just use a dropcloth when necessary and if needed, tarp it off for painting.

>except aluminum
It can fit a spoolgun for aluminum MIG.

Also, oxy acetylene is good for welding aluminum in some applications, where the large, diffuse heat input relieves stress and produces a more ductile weld than other processes.

I used to make pens and turn other small wooden things with a mini wood lathe in my apartment. Its not very loud and its easy enough to clean up.

Black and decker workmate, build wood shit outside in a place that won't be in peoples' way - not in the parking lot. Sweep sawdust somewhere it won't be an eyesore.

Depending on where you live the local fire code or your lease might forbid anything more potent than butane in your apartment and you likely don't have more than 20A breakers. If you have a garage you could keep a generator inside it to use a stick welder but you would also have to set up screens and such to make sure you're not arc flashing your neighbors.

Without a garage your options for metal are more limited. You could do silver soldering and brazing on a portable welding table. If propane is forbidden then you can either stick to small projects doable with a small butane torch like jewelry/desktop/decorative items or just make sure to use up all the propane for a larger torch the same day you buy it without bringing it inside. You can make stuff using fasteners as well - rivets and bolts. Or do "machined" knifemaking outside with small/portable grinders.

Alternately you can do electronics, buy a 3d printer, cast pot metal stuff, etc. Just make sure to set up a good ventilation system to suck fumes out of your living room.

If you are lucky enough to have a balcony you can do stuff there but never do anything with smoky or decently powerful fire there since it can damage the exterior or above balcony and fuck you out of your deposit. Naomi Wu keeps a miter saw there but her apartment living room is a workshop, which I suspect your wife won't approve of.

If you have to do stuff mainly indoors you can work with hand tools to avoid spraying dust everywhere, and you can make a compact workbench-toolchest that won't really stand out. Do rough cutting outside with power tools because it's otherwise a pain. But hand tools involve a lot of hammering so don't piss your neighbors off - hand drill & pare instead of chopping mortises in wood.

(cont.) didn't have the character space to add this, lee valley sells plans for an "apartment workbench" which looks like a piece of normal furniture when closed and stores/conceals all the tools. It costs 30 dollars. You can look at their video ad for it, reverse engineer it and figure out how to reproduce it if you're smart enough and don't want to shell out. Couldn't find a free version for something similar in a quick search, sorry.

Sorry mate, khv here. Still welding the prettiest bird houses in all the land.... and will be probably forever.

>>1556501
You can hide the tools, but you can't hide the smell.

I have the same problem. I gave up on my ideas and resorted to things you can do in an apartment. Now I fuck around with electronics instead of metal working and cars.

Go weld up some aluminum intercooler tubing with a spool gun and get back to me.
The 300 dollars youd spend on a spool gun setup should be invested toward an alphatig or a primeweld 225 or similar ac/dc tig machine so you can actually get decent welds.
Spool guns are for production environments not automotive fabrication in your garage.

buy a small ass house on a large lot.

alternatively, buy a small commercial shop building and convert a small portion to an apartment.

If you dig around you could probably find a shop, garage or something that would rent you out a little spot, hell they might even let you trade a little labor for a little workspace.

I don't know where you live or what the housing market is like, but if you want to do stuff like what you described you're going to either need to rent a shop or buy a house. In the area that I live, rent is pretty much the same price as a monthly mortgage payment, and since you're already living with someone it shouldn't be to hard to afford a modest house (if your area is like mine).
