I've been doing a/v for 2 years now. I like using tools and not sitting at a desk all day but I'm getting pretty sick of regular hour+ commutes and waking up piss early everyday. I gotta wake up at 3:30 am tomorrow working the weekend out of town. What do you do for work? I need some ideas to start looking elsewhere.

i've been considering joining the electricians union here and starting an apprenticeship. A lot of my time in a/v is doing actual installs and pulling cable, which I actually like, but doing service calls and PM visits really blows. My two realistic options right now are to go down the union electrician path so I get more time on actual construction sites, or try to get my company to send me to a/v programming training and try to work towards getting paid to program. I honestly am a little scared that electrician work is a lot harder than what I do now but I'm really not sure.

Saw that coming years ago. Metrics are getting in the way of craftsmanship.

Construction all went to contractors so that was no exit from the customers and metrics. Network is a route many take. I went to Audit and became Internal Affairs and Anti Theft. Enjoyed that for a decade.

Currently in supply chain. Pay aint as good as tech but the work:life ratio is more to my liking.

Used to work in an auto parts store but I couldn't stand dealing with morons all day, so I quit and am sitting on my ass. Most customers who came in weren't smart enough to buy an auto part, much less install it on a vehicle.

Women who came in were the worst, they don't know shit, except what their moron boyfriend told them about cars, which is always wrong, but they have 100% confidence in them and act like you're the idiot for giving them the right information.

Still remember this one bitch:

>Hey last week you sold me an air filter and it's the wrong one! I know I told you it's a 2008 and on the receipt it says you looked up a 2007!
>Me: Oh...well let me look here, uh, says it should be the same filter for a 2007 or a 2008

1532417

>>1532406
Mostly own. Renting/leasing really depends on the area, soil type and quality. Good productive ground with good drainage can go anywhere from $200-400 per acre. Some have in ground irrigation which really jumps up the price. Again it really varies depending on the area tho. Lighter sand tends to be $100-250 maybe sometimes hitting $300.

Field shape, and size also affect value as does hills, rocks, etc. You wouldn’t think shape would matter much but these days with efficiency being so important many are willing to pay a premium for nice square fields. Larger farms are also less interested in small fields because they can be hassle with with the large equipment used today and the time it takes to move and set up that equipment. That said if the field is near land they already have they will be more interested. Field accessibility can also affect value. I’ve turned down some great land simply because it was a pain in the ass to get to like bad hills, landlocked etc

Used to be way more sketchy when we dealt with cash. The corner stores in the hood would always pay in cash and they would pay in all small bills. So you gotta walk past 50 nogs chilling outside while carrying $1000 in ones and fives. But the only real robbery I remember from that time was an ex employee who stole a key to the safe, he found the truck parked at a store while the driver wasn’t in it and he opened up the safe and stole everything. But another guy from our company happened to be helping that driver and saw the ex employee there and was keeping an eye on him so his ass got turned in and arrested.

The quality and craftsmanship put into Knipex(tm) tools such as the Knipex(tm) Pliers Wrench(tm) are second to none.

If you are ready to stop working and start succeeding, you can put down those blue handle tools and find a wide selection of Knipex(tm) at your favorite online tool retailer and even at select brick and mortar home improvement stores.

One of my old customers runs a business that exports all sorts of random shit to South American and the Caribbean. He does some good revenue out of that place filling up a couple shipping containers a day. It’s mostly food and drinks but there’s random shit too like if people want their favorite Quilted Northern TP, he will send a pallet of it. It’s a lot of high end resorts ordering and people will pay good money to have their favorite American chips and beer.

You obviously dont understand the implications of having any critical infrastructure using legacy software that isnt scalable, "shit pumps" or not.

It actually is something that needs to be brought up to the board of directors, hopefully you have an emergency plan in case of hardware or software failure. Its not like running a unix or unix like system. I dont think you understand how royally fucked you will be and how much critical downtime you will actually have.

And this isnt anything special or new, its all around the united states and its a huge problem.

>I'm at one of the largest water districts in California, plants been running for 60+ years without any violations

Ah, its always worked so why fix it right?
Maybe the plans to replace the computer system from 1986 that uses 5 inch floppy drives to control the hoover damn is a waste of time and money? Though funding for that keeps getting siphoned away anyways.

Its the same exact deal, except worse because windows doesnt age like older systems did.

> If I had to guess emergency plan it would be to run everything at the local control panels just like it was run for years before the plant had any type of remote operation system.

Lot's of mounting TV's, projectors, screens, cameras etc, and a lot of running cable, mostly cat6. I also do service stuff, so showing up to a/v systems where something isn't working and trying to fix it.

There's a lot of programming that goes on too that I'm trying to get into. Most of the equipment has a cable running to a processor made by Crestron, Extron, or AMX, and there's a touch screen interface for the client to interact with. So it all the ins/outs etc need to be programmed. I've only dived into it a little bit, since I can't really do it on my own time without equipment, but It looks piss-easy and with the exception of AMX, it's all GUI based programming. Unless you have your own store (store manager or higher corporate), that’s a dead end gig. Even with Amazon, so many retail stores were busting ass over the holidays because of the online ordering and how lots of companies are shipping from the store. I was in a few places where the employees in back boxing shit up for the UPS guy to take were moving more product than the actual floor staff.

Also I barely bought anything off a sales floor this year. If I ordered from a brick and mortar store, I would go online and just pick it up at the counter. Mid-November and I could order something online from Kohl’s at 10:30pm and pick it up at 11:15pm that night.

Go for it. I have seen some store managers in their late 20s early 30s. Those can be 6 figure jobs, especially with bonuses. Two issues with that- so many companies are slashing the labor so bad that store managers are stuck working 80hrs a week (CVS got so bad with this when they converted to CVS Health). And the 2nd is if you’re a good store manager, they want to keep you in the stores. The best managers often get moved around once a year so they can fix underperforming stores. Also the corporate gigs, the companies will often hire college kids before they hire people with years of experience in the company and that always pissed me off.

I always laugh when I see “Help Wanted” ads for retail jobs that mention “Flexible Hours!” as a perk of the job. This doesn’t mean flexible scheduling for the employees, it means the employees must be flexible and work whatever the store wants them to work.

Most of what I handle is water damage after the maintenance techs fix any leaks, or the company hires out to fix the roofing or tuckpointing. If it's not that it's probably repairing crumbling plaster in older buildings, any kinda wall repair.

I don't do too bad for myself, I think. For the most part it's pretty low-stress, I enjoy the physical work that isn't backbreaking. I was kinda a softbody when I got here, drank too much, didn't know my ass from a hole in the ground, needed some structure. Sometimes I wonder if it's a little deadend, think about going back to school or learning a different trade to make some real money, but I ought not to complain. Most of the guys here look at it as a comfy place to retire, former union carpenters and general contractors who took a steady paycheck and the employer-healthcare-subsidy for their family.

Yeah. When I got here I just wanted something to pay my bills with better than a retail job, something to feel more accomplished in as I try to fuck art students. That life feels less and less satisfying as the days go by, age is just a number but it For Real changes peoples' expectations of you, I'm feeling it.

I'm keeping living expenses low as possible and socking away all I can, I actually have some mid-low 5 figures set aside wondering what doors that might open in the mid-long term.

Everyone at the place who is older thinks the younger folk oughta be hungrier and working more side-jobs. Some of them are, as the days go by I feel less happy not being one of them. I'm at a bit of a loss for wider-perspective, but just today I was talking to some older folks who were looking to lay down roots in the Milwaukee metro, and I have friends in Michigan. Chicago definitely seems to, currently, have the surplus of work-needs-doing and more competitive wages, but it makes more and more sense to me why Illinois is no place to be laying down roots, buying buildings, or starting businesses. But there might be fertile ground nearby, with some 3-5 years' more accrual under my belt.

I'm scared that all this sounds like hot-air-all-talk-bullshit, but like I said, didn't know ass from hole in ground when I got here, it MAJORLY broadened my very-sheltered perspective just having got here, but I'm still at a bit of a loss for The Right Questions To Ask, though I have plenty of unburnt-wellkept bridges to people who would have answers when I figure them out. I think I've learned about all there is to learn passively at this job (they didn't teach me shit, but it was a whole new world to me). But my nights and weekends are mine, I have my savings, I'm using my healthcare, and smoking weed+watching netflix feels like a hollow life not worth pursuing.

Any perspective on absolutely anything would be appreciated. I'm feeding myself better but only growing hungrier.

4-8 weeks at a time -- are you paid 24/7 the entire time you're aboard?

1 salary when on board
1 salary when home

(for example:
contract states: <<payment: 100 money (per month)>>
If I stay 1 month onboard, and I am paid 200 money.)

Effectively one month on board generates two paychecks. But the norm for filipinos and eastern europeans seems to be "x salary per month onboard".

Salary is set by tariffs, basically a minimum wage except that its made by the labor union instead of the government. Due to hard times in the maritimes (offshore at least), there is currently no paid overtime. Nominal workday is 12 hours.

Technically speaking I could demand payment for any overtime I do, forcing the company to pay me or take it to court and win. However, the pay is honestly more than good enough and there is a ton of qualified semen ready to replace me.

Are you asking if you should start in the maritimes? I don't know. If you are in the US, I've heard stories of mistreated greenhorns and disgusting hierarchies among american crew. But it's only stories. I've never worked with americans onboard.

Boss liked him cause he was "a go getter" took me longer to find tool to do the job then the job itself. Fuck those people and not worth the pain in the ass honestly

I have dozens of Latin women in their 50s and 60s who are constantly hitting on me at work. This one a couple weeks ago told me I need to quit smoking because “You’re so beautiful and the world needs more beautiful people like you so you have to live long and make lots of beautiful babies!”

Years ago I used to deliver pizzas and one time I had a delivery at this hotel and it was a bunch of fat ratchet black women having some party. I had some 45yo hood bitch grabbing at my junk as there’s a bunch of kids running in and out of the door from the adjoining room and I’m just like “I need to get the fuck out of here”. I remember this one kid who was maybe 9-10 years old just staring with his mouth open as the lady is motioning with her hand like she’s trying to jerk me off and the kid was so confused, as was I.
