Fuck any fucker who ever fucken shits on WD40---this shit is a miracle in a can.

WD40 appreciation thread.

Just used some WD40 to completely uncease and lubricate a genuine made in USA leatherman multi-tool tool.
It works like a dream now.--thanks to WD40.

I won't have to lubricate or clean the multi-tool for at least 1 year from now.

Fucken love this product.

Serious question in the form of a stupid one. I mean...its just grease aint it? So does it really have uses beyond not making that wheel squeek or making hinges/tools open a bit more easier? I feel like its just the duct tape version for lubricants

wd40 is similar to diesel or kerosene with a bit of lubricant/solvent properties. It isn't close at all to grease. as a lubricant, it's lighter than sewing machine oil.
the most I ever used wd 40 was for cleaning shit like dirty mechanism, or motorcycle chain, or spraying down wet tools for storage.
once I sprayed down a snow shovel to stop snow from sticking to it.. that worked

Its better as a solvent or rust proofed or cleaner.

Like if I got some water and dirt and shit on my tool, then spraying with wd40 and clean it off, then either re grease it, or give it one more light coating

Avoid spreading it on bearing or like a joint on a pair of pliers. It will thin out the grease inside and it will start flowing out.

It's refined kerosene with a small amount of mineral oil in it.

That means it evaporates quickly, then leaves behind a *very* thin film of oil that lasts for a week or two before also evaporating.

WD40 makes a great gunk cleaner or lapping fluid, but it's shit as a lubricant. When I oil something, I want it to stay oiled for more then a few hours.

Obligatory WD stands for Water Displacement. People shitting on WD aren’t using it for its intended purpose, keeping residual water off of shit. It’s not a penetrating oil. With that out of the way, for oiling components like squeaky bearings and hinges I use small amounts of motor oil in whatever weight I need. Lasts longer than WD. WD has its place for quick and simple fixes. If I have a bad pulley on the engine I spray WD on the bearings until I hit the bad one and the squeak stops and I know which to replace. For rust prevention on tools that I use but not regularly, it’s easier to wipe off before use than other oils and a quick dip when I’m done and it’s good to go. It’s a great general purpose item.

WD40 is better than nothing, but that's all. The "secret" is the good marketing, and that at least it does not make things worse.
If one needs to lubricate things, motor oil is not the best choice, as it has tons of internal-combustion-specific additives in it. One should use (non-automatic) transmission oil (75W-90) if it needs to penetrate or plain machine grease for accessible surfaces.
When it comes to prevent surfaces from moisture and rusting, I use this recipe: Put 1-5% petroleum jelly in lighter fluid, and heat it slightly, so that the petroleum jelly dissolves completely. This stuff you can spray or brush on tools and other stuff you intend to touch in the forseeable future. The tools will just feel *slightly* greasy, but not in an annoying way, as petroleum jelly is also an ingredient in many skin care products. I dip my sockets in it, and brush it on the non-chromed parts of my ratchets, for example.
If you are serious, the same procedure works for 25-35% petroleum jelly in lighter fluid. It can still be sprayet, but the pretective layer will be thicker. I use this for areas on my car.

Any oil works for that. The real WD-fu is as drilling and machining lubricant for aluminum. It's shit as rust protection (CRC or Boeshield are far superior) and isn't particulary good penetrant.

I use PB Blaster instead of WD and the only time I ever use it is a little mist on shit I don’t want to rust. There are better options than PB/WD if you need penetrating oil or lubrication.

You’re right though, it is pretty expensive.

>> No.1532684

I think it’s better than WD-40 for that purpose because WD isn’t really a specialized penetrating oil. I have Liquid Wrench at home and then some generic Kimball Midwest that comes in boxes of a dozen from the place our fleet shop orders from. They left a full case out in the rain for a couple days so the labels were all messed up and cans looked like shit and they just tossed the thing in the dumpster so I grabbed a couple cans first. Still works fine if you don’t mind a waterlogged paper label.

Anyway all of the actual penetrating oils seemed to be real close, like +/- 10% torque required to remove the shit after it was used. So they will all either work, or they won’t, and it’s not worth buying the super expensive orange can if you go through a lot of it and are a cheap ass.

>> No.1532701

Fuck the labels that’s a nice score.
I’ve never used WD40 on something without dousing the thing but that’s just me being an idiot. With the aerokroil I typically use just a spritz or two and that gets the job done. I’ve watched the kroil travel up threads but never thought to try a comparison with WD40

Its twice as expensive because of how the manufacturer deliberately sells it industrial only. When they sell through the industrial distributors only, the inflated as fuck distributor pricing is what you are stuck with.

I used to steal it from my old work, had 55 gallon drums of it and would put it in little bottles.
I like the smell, but it doesnt work that much better than anything really.
The pricing gives it an illusion of being superior.

Regular WD-40 isn’t even penetrating oil. It will probably creep a little but it’s an all around bullshit oil which means it doesn’t do any job as well as the proper product or tool. Pic related is the WD’s brand of actual penetrating oil, and I’m sure that is just about as good as Kroil. They have WD Silicone lube and stuff too if you want a real lubricant.

it's a great cutting fluid for aluminum.
with heat, it's a really good penetrant
it's good for cleaning, degreasing, freeing up stuck things.
it's not a good lubricant, but it's a very good temporary lubricant.
and of course, it's very good at doing what it was designed for, displacing water and short-term rust protection. I always keep some around.

>> No.1533903

wd-40 is great, it isn't a penetrating oil, it's a solvent and that is how it unfucks stuck shit. it also leaves a small oil film to protect against rust.
It will also severely weaken rubber and plastic so you have to wear nitrile gloves with it else you'll start finding holes in your cheapskate finger condoms. this is because it contains mostly some special variant of naphtha
oh and it doesn't have "fish oil" in it like some people claim. it just stinks
idk if anyone tested it for removing loctite but it basically "lubes" things by removing dirt and bullshit. The little lubrication it does add is always on door hinges. Door hinges are not anywhere close to a demanding application and a shitload of hinges exist running dry just fine until enough of grandma's skin flakes pile up inside there
