I wonder if the whole "turn to lowest setting when not in use" thing is fuddlore. Unless a spring is being pushed back the material's yield point, a spring would not be damaged by storing in a compressed state. Rather, springs are worn by cycles of compression and decompression.

>> No.1526965

it isn't the spring that goes out of calibration. when any metal is under stress or strain it will creep over time, so you have to set it on zero to maintain decent calibration.

There is a VERY simple test you can do to see if it's out of calibration or not. Put your torque wrench on a lug nut and set it for 20 ft lbs. Take a 20 lb weight and very slowly balance it on the wrench. If it clicks when the full weight is applied you know you're good. Even a cheap half inch Harbor Freight torque wrench has an accuracy of +/- 4% which means it might click at 19.2 ft lbs or 20.8 ft lbs which is still good.

a torque wrench set to click at, in your example (using retard units) 20 ftlb will click when e.g. 20lb is applied 1 ft from the axis (socket), OR when 40lb is applied at 6 inches from the socket OR when 10lb is applied at 2 ft from the socket.
that is how torque works, here is the equation check it yourself:
T = r x F; Torque = radius (distance) x force ("""weight""")

pic related claims to know, but my theory is this: if the torque is low enough to use an open-ended wrench, then you should be able to torque it by feel if you have much experience at all. I suppose there are situations where that does not apply, like where something can warp or not seal if the fasteners are not torqued the same, but I've been lucky in that I've never felt like I had to use a crows foot. When I was young and starting out it was on my list, but never got bought and never was missed either.

It does, but it’s probably <10%. You gotta do the physics equations. If you have a torque wrench that is 12in long, and you stick a crowsfoot on there that is 1.2in from the center of the square drive to the center of the fastener, the actual torque on the nut-bolt would be 10% higher than the setting on the torque wrench. So if the wrench is set at 50in-lbs, the added leverage of the crowsfoot would mean you’re actually tightening the bolt to 55in-lbs.

Thanks for this thread guys, it made me appreciate my torque wrenches (pic related), and I even took the 3 large ones apart to clean and grease them. It was not really neccessary, but I found that thread, so I wanted to be sure:
https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=328193

By the way, I specifically recommend the Stahlwille Manoskop wrences for two reasons mainly:
1) The do not need to be set to 0 for storage, as the spring is only under load during operation.
2) On can set any torque in seconds with a slide mechanism, no need to turn a drum.

To test if the calibration is good, I measure the wrench lenght, calculate the force needed for a specific torque setting, and put a luggage scale at the handle to check it. The ratched is fixed in a vise for this. Mine are very accurate.
