I second that fire extinguisher thing
Was welding in a bank under construction. wall lit up, fire watch asleep. Fire extinguisher empty, ran to truck to get one awkward half run half walk back to bank because I didn't want anyone to see me running with a fire extinguisher. Fire watch had already pulled own the wall section and was dragging it outside. we stomped it out in the mud.

PROTIP: Nemisis safety glasses. Best sunglasses i ever found. Relatively cheap so you can toss when they get scratched. Just so happen to wrap around your eyes and safety rated. On my face or hat if im awake.

Toss em on jumping cars, hammering shit, grinding, airing up tires, etc...

Pretty much if you consider maybe you need safety squints take the 2 seconds to throw em on.

Used to work with a guy that had one eye. You get shit in your eye driving your're dicked. Hell anons, try closing one eye and driving down the highway.

Depth perception rekt!

If you're a fatheaded fuck like me they may be a little snug and give you a headache. Just wear them intermittently or switch between face and head and grab a fistful of advil. I dont ever notice it after a day or 2. It's fucking worth it.

Protip: use non-chlorinated brake cleaner. Apparently the chlorine is not only used to make it less flammable but, when burned, makes chlorine gas. That chlorine gas also bonds to water in the air and turns to hydrochloric acid when it condenses.

Only buy non chlorinated brake cleaner.

iirc the level at which 8hrs of exposure will start to damage your hearing is about 80db, if you know someone with the equipment you could test it, and at the same time, get your own hearing checked, at the very least you'll have a baseline reading for in the future if you start to have some hearing loss, test your hearing every year, and also if/when you leave the job, and finally buy some earmuffs and as an added bonus wear them when you mow your lawn
A good employer would test the level of your exposure to noise, if the level was above the threshold for posing a risk then they would test your hearing regularly, and they would provide noise mitigation of some sort, plus they would give you some ppe ie earmuffs

Ahh, I don't get quite that much so it's probably fine. I don't think it's much higher than 80db but I think it might be around there and I don't get that much exposure.

Still want them to respond to me when I ask about it though. Having an employer who doesn't give a fuck when you ask legit safety questions is super frustrating.

>> No.1488635

>>1488590
I get pretty worn down by health and safety stuff desu, be assertive, but realise that health and safety is just one thing that's pulling on your employer's attention
Also there's noise and there's noise, loud sudden bangs and continuous noise are different things, are measured differently, and have different effects on your hearing
And you'd be surprised what 80-odd dbA sounds like, decibels are on a log scale so 90db is "ten times as loud" as 80db, and the same for between 80db and 70db, 70 and 60 and so on, noise can really sneak up on you, at my plant I was really surprised by the results of the noise dosimetry that we had done, and the hearing tests resulted in quite a few people being referred to specialists for their hearing loss
That said, the average age of my workers is about 45, so it's hard to determine exactly how much of it was potentially caused by working here, and how much is just age/life related
If yourn employer isn't coming to the party then do yourself a favour and buy some earmuffs anyway, noise induced hearing loss is permanent and cumulative, wear them at work, and at home when you're using a lawnmower, power tools, your weed whacker, etc

somewhat related...I purchased a heap of 2nd hand power tools today for cheap. One in particular is a table saw thats missing its guard.
I live alone with no pets - is the blade guard that important if im following other safety procedures? (no gloves, push stick, grippy boots, tight cloths, etc).

Also, What can go wrong if NOT using a push stick and just using both hands? as loon as i dont fall into the blade i should be fine?

Just go get a push stick.
Or make one.
If your piece grabs mid cut, it'll pull your hands with it much faster than you can pull them back.
It's really not worth losing a digit.

A table saw is one of the most dangerous tools you can operate. A quick Google search turned up:
>Every year more than 4,000 Americans suffer amputations — get their hands mangled using table saws. Upwards of 30,000 people wind up in emergency rooms with lesser injuries.

Please don't become a statistic, anon.

Agreed,
Not a boomer, but I won't sacrifice personal safety for company efficiency.
If it takes a little longer to get set up,
That's how long the job takes.
Complacency in the workplace is a killer. For example, just because you climb a ladder, or use an angle grinder every day, doesn't mean that it doesn't deserve your full attention.

Things like 3 points of contact, 4 to 1 ratio, dont lean off a ladder, dont step on the top 2 rungs, ect. These are all in place because someone got hurt.

If you're working at height, tie off.
Better believe it's going to cost your company a lot more money if you get seriously Injured or killed because you " didn't want to waste time with finding a harness "
.
Granted, the system is abused as a " get out of work free " card, but it is there to keep you safe and whole. It is the bare minimum required by law, you owe it to yourself and your family, both today and down the road, to take care of yourself and watch your own ass.

tl;dr
Safety isn't a joke.

>end up focused on how much I fucking hate the new guy and while moving the bin sweep I step directly into an auger
thank fucking god the auger was ready to be replaced (that's why we were cleaning everything out) and the belts were almost totally worn off, it sucked my foot in and twisted my foot a bit but the auger was worn enough that my foot stopped it and burned the belts off. Came out with some nerve damage and I can't feel one side of my foot but that's a fuck of a lot better than losing a leg to a grain auger.

Moral of the story is always take your time, even if you've done something a million times something can go wrong. Pic related is basically what I put my foot into except 3 holes instead of 2 and zero safety guards. It was for sure wide enough that it would have taken my whole leg had it been in better shape. A local farmer actually with the exact same bin and auger stepped into his just weeks after I did except his was brand new, took his leg up to the knee before someone shut it off. Literally a matter of seconds and one of those things can eat your leg right off.

I used to be against the OHS stuff but I am 100% for it now. Don't care if you think it's bullshit, maybe I am a fucking retard, but even retards deserve to go home at the end of the day.

Hardest part was working for a boss who was super anti OHS and going from 100% agreeing with him to saying we need to get shit fixed. Worked for an operation like I said that was "farm run" so nothing was up to standard, now a huge multi billion dollar corporation runs us and says they dont have the money to fix problems (for example many sections of railing 40-50 feet off the ground have no railing, you have to walk across tin roofing about 30 feet off the ground to access some ladders, sections of railing are so poorly tack welded on that if you actually lean on them you will break the railing ((someone leaned on one having a smoke and the railing broke off, they managed to catch themselves and didnt fall)). I want to quit but I'm basically at a point where they cant fire me now so I'm slamming them with inspections/paperwork saying the entire place is unsafe and isnt up to code and waiting for it to either get shut down or fixed before I do anytthing.

Saw a guy try to stop a hydraulic hose pinhole leak by grabbing it with his hand once; this was at work. It proceeded to pump his hand up rather like a basketball. He went to the ER and ended up fine. Same guy (this was the 70's in rural Kentucky, and he was over 60 then) painted his car with rattle cans and a roller, and it could have looked worse. At one point his fuel pump died, so he ran his windshield washer line to the carb, filled it with gas, and went down the road pumping his windshield washers like crazy. He'd also jump his car by pulling up to the donor car until the bumpers touched, then he'd short the hot battery posts with the jack (not a scissors style, it had about a three foot "backbone" to it). It basically comes back to 'shit mangers' as someone has quoted Bob Customer x = amount of money to do a job
At some point they've done an assessment on how many man hours it takes to do the job, then you do your risk assessment which means working at heights, underground, hiring a crane, poking a sleepy bear or whatever the fuck the job entails. That factors into your man hours when people are doing some kind of potentially hazardous activity as they're gearing up, getting tied off and all that shit = final quote

You want to quote lower and risk making a lower profit, that's great but know you probably won't and tough shit. Be a better fucking manager and get your shit together on quotes.
I've liked some companies I've worked for in the past, but none of them enough I ever figured sending someone to their death or dismemberment for because they're just some cunts in it to make a buck and listen to shareholder whining. Sooner young fellas come to terms with that no job is worth your minimum wage, insurance premiums and other bullshit, the less hassle it is for everyone as we're all on the same level-
>no one gives a fuck

Even the hard faggots who claim to be tough and shit, they won't remember your dead name in a months time and its up to you to make sure you don't die or get wrecked. Someone tells you to go climb a grain silo with no harness or down in a pit with live wires, tell him to go fuck himself. Because if they don't give a fuck, neither should you.

pretty much all this. your job isn't worth your life. If a manager is sending you to your death call him out, call safety, call OSHA, just do anything but your job.
It's far too easy for the faggots in ops to push everyone to work excessive overtime, neglect weekly maintenance, and refuse to pay for PPE. They just look at at the money going in and the money going out and think it's ok for everyone to be using sub-par safety equipment. Sure you can call them out for being retards when shit goes down and they have OSHA breathing down their neck but that doesn't undo the poor sap who got maimed.
This shit also starts at the ground level too. Been working at a military contractor for only 5 years and issues that have happened at the plant
>moving several ton hardware, some bitch walks into the line of fire. Only two of 3 spotters were there and they didn't even see her
>gets her non-steel toed foot run over and crushed

>coworker checking on an automated cleaning system, a low claxon alarm is going off because the safety doors are open
>some jackass working next to him walks over to the control panel and starts pushing buttons trying to silence the alarm
thank christ the panel locks when the safety locks are disengaged, he could've cut that dude's hands off of sprayed acetone straight into his face.

>couple of retards are PMing a scissor lift with a central hydraulic piston
>retard leans THROUGH THE SCISSORING SUPPORTS and disengages the hydraulic piston
>his less retarded coworker is fast enough to pull him out so instead of decapitating himself he just gets scalped

after the amount of idiocy I've seen in this place I'd be perfectly comfortable letting these wastes of chromosomes remove themselves from the gene pool, but more often than not they're threatening the safety of everyone around themselves when they pull shit like this.

It's not about never taking a risk, if you adopt that mindset then you won't even leave the house, you can't live like that
Being safe is about managing risks, so that's identifying risks, eliminating them where it's possible, and reducing them where it's not
What's reasonable and what's practical should govern what you do about a risk, you don't need twelve spotters for a small forklift in a warehouse if you think having two is a reasonable way to address the risk
I don't even know why I'm telling you this, you probably already drive below 240mph on dirt roads and wear a seatbelt, you already do this stuff every day

"A mouse could get up there and chew on wires and start a fire."

Got a fine because i calles him a fucking idiot and held a bic lighter to the wall and then the ground.

Metal shop, dirt floor. Is he gonna turn into thermite faggot?

And whi the fuck is sleeping in the shop, unable to escape one of 6 fucking doors or god forbid just go full koolaid man.

Those things are earthed for a reason, chances are you'd either leave the whole thing floating or blow a breaker/fuse, it would be very unlikely to cut off the ground wire but cause the live to make contact with the ground wire on the grinder's side. Cut a cord with a 240V hedge trimmer once, didn't even blow the breaker and those blades are metal, so I imagine it's not easy to get a short by doing so.

How often do you test your ground wire anon? There's a chance it may not even work, the chassis is the earth in many cases, which would turn whoever is holding it into the earth too, in the unlikely event of a short
But then it only has to happen once at least RCDs are cheap, I keep one in my away tool bag

I know it's connected because everything I own with a metal chassis never undergoes vibration that could unstake a connector. And by everything I own with a metal chassis I mean a toaster and a sandwich press. The rest is all double-insulated.

I hope a worker dies under your employ so you get sued into oblivion you greedy jew. Workers have the right to a safe workplace. If your way of sticking it to big gov is by putting a hardworking man's life at risk, you deserve everything you get.

Depends on what you do...
I'm always "lucky" to take a hit right in the fucking eye whenever I end up using tools with spinny bits involved, so I wear the light goggles (they look like sunglasses, but clear), as they're quite comfy and cheap, so I don't mind the $3 when I have to replace them when they end up being scratched.
