Just FYI guys

I'm on the side that buys a bunch of this shit

I work in a very large factory for a very big multinational company, and because it is a very big company, they need to be extra careful of who they buy stuff from (legally) so they have a list of approved vendors. Well, it is expensive to maintain a list of vendors (to have someone as a vendor, you open a line of credit with that company, they begin automatically processing the orders coming in from around the world charging it against that credit, then once the item arrives, our indirect shipping department opens the box, checks if it is broken or not, then confirms receipt of the good.

Because it is so expensive, it is hard to justify having millions of vendors, and even harder to convince the purchasing department that you need bed bath and beyond as an approved vendor so you can buy a coffee maker for your team's office, I mean why would an automotive component plant need to buy stuff at such frequency to justify them as a vendor.

Well you can bet your ass McMaster and Grainger are big vendors for us, and they realize that there is a shit ton of stuff that companies like mine need to buy, that they can't unless Grainger or McMaster stocks it.

I mean I often use bearing distributors as my go to consolidator. I send them an email with an Amazon link or Walmart link or something, then they send back a quote with 5-10% of the cost tacked on top. When they get the order, they just buy the part and ship it directly to our plant. There are giant companies that do nothing but consolidation for big companies like us.

>>1438422
Damn that’s kinda crazy how the company middle mans Amazon and Walmart for you, but it makes sense.

And the coffee creamer, that’s a great timesaver for big companies. There is enough shit going on and a plant manager doesn’t have time to run to Costco twice a week to buy sugar and then explain it to corporate three months later when they get the bill. It’s amazing how many vendors there are for stupid shit and getting four dozen invoices every day for random shit is a pain in the ass for everybody. Might as well put in one big Grainger order instead.

>>1438431
That’s not bad. I walk through our fleet department on a given day and they have so many fucking boxes from different vendors. Grainger for random stuff, boxes from the Freightliner dealer, more from the Paccar distro, another from International, a Fastenal box, then more shit from Carrier for the reefers, Kimball Midwest for all sorts of oils. Every 6 months we have different coffee machines in the break room and different vendors for that, I have no fucking clue why they can’t stick with one. One guy for the food vending machine, another for the drink vending machine, another for the one with work gloves and safety glasses.

Hey bby...

I’m aware of Grainger and the clusterfuck of vendors that companies go through, but it was news to me that there’s companies that will middle man Amazon for you just to cut down the numbers of different companies.

If I need something, I either tell somebody above me or use a company credit card and submit the receipts to the powers that be. I have worked many days in my life, but never in an accounting department.

>>1438457
My last job before the current one we had 3-4 vendors plus Restaurant Depot and a business credit card. That was simple. Place I have been for the past 5 years is crazy and we’re not even a huge location, but busy. When you gotta sales, repairs, delivery and logistics, there’s a whole lot of bullshit. The manufacturing is done about 45min up the highway from us and much of the repair people for customers work out of there as well and that place is a madhouse.

Just be aware that while the majority of the models are correct, there are the occasional CAD models that are inaccurate.

I had ONE expensive fuckup at work where I designed a tool-steel die plate and use flat-head bolts to secure it and grabbed the CAD file from McMaster's catalog. The plate was made to match the CAD model, but when the hardware arrived the countersink angle on the bolts we received was different from the one on the CAD model. So we had to switch to regular socket head bolts and spend extra hours to remachine counterbores into the plate.

It was an expensive fix that could have been prevented by ordering the bolts and double-checking them against the CAD model before having the plate made.

Somewhat related question: Is Grainger like a retail store I can walk into or is it all mail order? If so, what will they sell there? Any decent tools or that’s all online?

Grainer has stores, but at least the ones I've been to they are more places you go to deal with a human when you make an order or deal with a return. They stock some stuff, but very little, and nothing you won't find at a hardware store.

Maybe make some phone calls to those industry supply places or go visit, if they're not interested in your business ask if they know someone who might be. In my experience industrial supply people are pretty decent to deal with, I can almost guarantee they will be pleasant to talk to even if they can't help you with what you need.

We have one of those (1250cfm) in a shed attached to our building. It only gets used once a year to pull Graphite dust out of a CNC mill or turning center so that it doesn't build up in the carriage system, fill up the coolant tray, or get inhaled by the operator. Hooks up with a 6-inch ID hose and I built this goofy plastic sheet enclosure made out of PVC pipe that we can surround the entire CNC mill with if we really really want to make sure the graphite doesn't escape into the rest of the warehouse.

I slit steel coils here in Detroit, we have a set of those 48" calipers. Nice to have when you need to be within .005 on a 2k ft. Long coil of steel

Graingers physical locations I've been to are really small. Similar to a cell phone store and display a small portion of common stuff. Mostly pick up orders when working out of state. Same with Fastenal and a couple others. HD-Supply/Whitecap is more of a warehousing retailer you can "browse" at. At least the few that I've been to. Pretty large but not quite HD or Lowes size.

Oh shit this would have been useful when our entire plant flooded over the weekend, instead of using squeegies and brooms all day pushing water out the doors.

Because they sell machinist supplies and nothing's more essential to a machine shop than coffee.

Also, it would be silly to sell coffee stirrers and not stuff to stir into your coffee.

To be fair those cups have built in heating elements, are made of stainless and are custom made for the air force, as no one else is dumb enough to buy coffee cups that heat the coffee in the cup, specially made for drinking while flying.

This is why workers end up paying for comfort items themselves, much easier for everyone to pitch in $10 and get it from walmart than to get the department manager to open his purse for an air conditioner from the QVL.

This is why I'm glad my company gives me a company credit card. If I need something for a job, I buy it from wherever and submit the receipt.
