Hello! I know very little about EE and I need to do something that's fairly simple, but I'm not sure what the best method would be.

I'm trying to drive several 12v fans from one 5v fan controller. It controls the speed of the fan by altering the voltage, rather than PWM. How could I step up the voltage to 12v in a way that would maintain the relative voltages? (i.e. 2.5v = 6v, 5v = 12v, etc). I was looking at boost converters, but I know for a fact that the new fans won't work with reduced amperage.

I have access to a 12v, 5v, and 3.5v rail inside the machine that I could use to power any suggested conversion method.

Chances are the fan controller doesn't have the amperage to drive that many fans, but you can rig up a simple transformer to convert 5v to 12v with coated magnet wire. All you need to do is wrap your primary winding to secondary winding in a ratio of 5:12 and you're basically good to go, just make sure the controller doesn't melt. Stepping up voltage from 5v to 12v and accounting for transformer inefficiency means you need 3-4x the amperage on the 5v side to equate to tbe 12v side.

Right, the thing is that this is a super chinesium 3d printer and if I blow the 5v supply, that will also for sure blow the mainboard and then I have to replace everything electronics-side, which I'd rather not have to do.

You will lose amperage when you convert a 5V supply to 12V .
I guess if you don't want buck boost converters, use an inverter, transformer and a rectifier

Pulse Width Modulation alters energy content by increasing or decreasing ratio of On/Off signals. OP’s deal just needs a flat voltage of the given value.

Have you considered an arduino? Not sure how much power they can output, but you could write like a 4 line program to double a voltage.

Oh since you have access to 5v and 12v rails and are converting between those two, you may be able to make a Current Mirror. Ratioed resistances on both sides would result in the exact fraction of 0-5v to 0-12v you want.
Not sure if this would work for AC. google tells me that Boost Converter is popular for DC voltage stepping up like other anons have said.

Simple power transistor.

Use your controller output to bias, collector to the 12V rail, emitter to the fans.
