1384410 No.1384410 [Reply] [Original]

Hello /diy/! I have (probably prematurely) begun digging a hole on my property in hopes of making an underground room/tunnel. I live next to a old water-filled strip cut in Southern Illinois, and my current plan is to dig down and into the side of a large, 90 year-old mound of excavated dirt that has grown numerous trees that were large even when I was young. I have played +200 hours of Minecraft, so needless to say I am quite the expert when it comes to digging. Joking aside, I could certainly used some advice and links to relevant sources of info on the web on how to properly complete this project as safely as can be done for a low budget. Here are my current conditions:

1. I will be using no power tools except in the case of constructing any wooden framework needed for the structural integrity of project. All digging will be done with a shovel, a bucket, and any non-power tools that can be purchased for cheap.
2. I am performing this task on my own with no assistance when digging. Each time I go out, I have someone who will physically check on me every hour if I do not contact them in the event of an accident. This is not ideal, but it is a restriction I have.
3. My final project would ideally be a 16'x16'x8' subterranean room with necessary supports to prevent a collapse, and a lockable door to prevent unsolicited wanderers from entering and causing an accident. I'm not certain on what preventative measures to take to keep rain from entering this room or the necessary stairs/ladder shaft section to reach the door.

I don’t think you realize how much work digging is, especially if you have been sitting at your PC for the past 4 years playing minecraft.

With that said, good luck. Don’t die. You will probably be safe though because you will give up before there’s ever a dirt cieling.

Yeah, I haven't received any words of encouragement for this project from people I know either. Needless to say I'm still determined to pursue it until I decide for myself that it is not safe to pursue any further, or that I grow tired of it. If for nothing else, it is helping me shed a few pounds in prep for some boxing exhibitions coming up at the gym I frequent.

My current routine has been to spend about an hour each day shoveling dirt, then heading back in for a break before pulling weeds in the garden. Pic related is my progress in my first hour of work several days ago. I estimate it is about 10-12 cubic feet given the slope of the hill. It is about 2 feet wide in the pic. I'll post updates updates every couple of days for those interested in my well-being. I'll also have my discoverer give a shout-out to /diy/ for trying to dissuade me in my obituary should it come to that, lol.

there is a high probability of being caught in a cave in, which could result in a somewhat quick death if you get surrounded by dirt and buried,... or a slower death if the cave-in traps you inside a sealed off void area.

I dug a 6-7 ft. deep hole in my backyard a few years ago. Could have kept going but I didn't have any supports and it seemed dangerous. It was also very narrow. I could still get on top of the shovel and worm my way out, but it was way over my head. Ended up filling it was piss bottles (serious) before filling up the last foot or so with dirt. Was thinking about digging it back up though cause I'm afraid someone will find it and I'll end up on the news.

We all know that building an underground bunker can be done. The issue is OP is ignorant of the proper ways to safely build it. Which will ultimately lead to his death.

And when OP needs advise, he comes to 4chan which tells us he is ok with being buried under tons of soil. Added to the fact is OP would like to dig his grave as cheaply as possible.

OP perhaps you should not dig down. But instead dig into the side of the hill. Spend the money to dig safely, your life depends upon it.

Set up a camera to record your progress so we can watch the video of the collapse. Bonus points if extremities are poking out of the soil. Try to wave to the camera before you loose consciousness. Maybe 4 finger wave for 4chan.

While a cool idea I wouldn't bother anon

It'd be different if you were mining out a rocky cave or outcropping but with plain dirt you're just going to get yourself killed. If you really really want an underground room dig out a large trench, build the room out of metal/concrete and then rebury the whole thing. It'd be a lot easier, safer, and probably faster than trying to dig out your own personal dirt coffin.

Around here, you have to dig footings about 4ft deep;
And your generally going straight down, trying not to disturb the ground.
That takes about an hour with a spade and post-hole digger.
The last foot is a bitch.
A pick axe is useless.
Again, OP's hole is not normal.

I took the advice of a few anons and purchased a pickaxe. Scraping the edges, as well as breaking up the large clumps, goes appreciably quicker than with just the spade. I've also bookmarked the mining Youtube channels linked in the thread to watch throughout the week.

New pic is approximately 5 hours of work, 1 with the pickaxe included. My current estimate is 50-70 cubic feet removed from the hole given the dimensions. I'll begin using a tape measure in future updates. I will continue to check daily for new advice and nervously chuckle at the ominous threats of collapse.

For a better description of my project, pic related. I want to have a dirt/wooden stair way lower me to the appropriate height for a stable entrance. The entrance descends at an incline, and empties out into the tortu....the room I wish to excavate. I am digging this into the side of a preexisting mound of earth, which will provide some "depth" to my room beneath the surface.

>I'm still determined to pursue it until I decide for myself that it is not safe to pursue any further

this is the classic trap

without the proper engineering knowledge you won't be able to assess the danger you're in - at least until it's already a hazard

also; confined spaces are REALLY something you don't want to fuck with and can easily kill rescuers as well - assuming they can even try to rescue you. if you're in a space that's too small for them to wear safety gear you'll have to wait until they can get real engineers to expand the hole or otherwise get access to you - and as someone said upthread it can take ~8 hours to safely extract someone once they get to you, better hope you haven't asphyxiated from dirt compressing your chest or had your organs crushed by then

if you insist on following this path at least buy a tombstone and put it at the entrance to your hole so no one has to bother digging you up to bury you.

It depends where you buy. Some real estate is equal to Miami prices. No where near California prices though. If you shop around you can get some good deals on land. I have a small ranch with a huge house that I paid 200,000 USD a few years ago. Honestly I would not take less than a million for it now.
Coffee is difficult to grow. It requires a lot of attention and is susceptible to various diseases. Very labor intensive. And don't plan on making a lot of money from the coffee.
The trees also harbor what they call coffee flies. Small biting flies that are a real annoyance

shipping containers do work for bunkers, the steel is pretty resistant to rust.

But you have to put steel strengthening braces every 4 foot or so. you can weld up multiple and cut openings for doorways or to make bigger rooms etc.

Or you could just make up formwork with steel H extrusions posts and beams and square tubing for studs and noggins, weld it all up.

Cover it with 3mm steel sheeting, and weld it all up. when fill walls with spray foam insulation and line with mdf paneling.

I've thought out making a bunker out of individual octagonal modules, then connecting them together and welding. then stuffing with a waterproofing tar/rubberised material.

The safest way is to excavate a trench with a sloping entrance that you can add stairs later. Then built roof supports then and then back fill it. But like other posters have pointed out trenching is dangerous. Don't trench vertical walls as the danger of collapse is high. Always have sloping walls. Better yet buy a sea can and hire a contractor to excavate for you. Then backfill in the seacan. Add waterproofing to the outside of it. Add gravel underneath for drainage so as to prevent shifting. Add supports on the inside so the walls and ceilings don't buckle. Soil is heavy especially when wet. Why are you doing this anyway?

Here are the lessons I learned from my incident:

1. I need to look into some kind of shoring system while I am digging.
2. All the rain we've had here has hampered the integrity of my work. I'm hoping it dries out soon, but it's been raining nonstop for the past 3 or 4 days.

Not really, you have to model both the elasticity of the upper surface and the extent to which either side will bow to the deformation of the upper surface, in addition to the amount either side bows due to pressure from material against them. Even if you can model each side as two simple equations, one F=-k*y and the other 0.25x^2=0.25x_0^2+y^2, it's still an awful calculation.
