Maybe I'm retarded, but I wanted to check with you guys first.

I want to make a new surface for my desk. I'm gonna get an MDF panel, painter's tape, and spray paint, to spray this design on it.

This is how I'm imagining the process will go:

>wipe down surface with damp cloth (or something) to get it as clean as possible
>spray entire surface white and let dry
>mask off the left and right edges of the entire color part (blue+orange)
>spray entire color area blue and let dry
>mask off the desired blue area leaving only the soon-to-be-orange part exposed
>spray orange and let dry
>peel off all tape
>now I have that design on my desk

That makes sense, right? I mean, masking off spray paint won't fuck it up, will it? I don't know why I'm getting the feeling this won't work right.

No it won't fuck up unless you're using duct tape or let it sit for a very long time.
You should consider using quality paint, and finish it all with some sort of clear coat.

I don't see the putting a design on a desk top when you're going to have stuff sitting on top, covering it up

and why on earth would you waste time painting something white, when you can simply get a white pre-finished panel

if you really wanted something that looked nice, look for nearby businesses that do vinyl signs/car wraps

>MDF panel
Don't. MDF is crap. It's utter crap. You will need 2 coats of paint and about 7 coats of varnish before you get a surface that doesn't fray when you so much as look at it.

The different colors of paint will likely build up a slightly noticeable difference in height. Clear coat can help blend the differences, but will take tons of coats to completely remove them.
When masking off for spraypainting, male sure all the layers below it are completely dried, or the tape may peel them off when removed. Spray paint can take days to dry, I usually wait a week to mask off parts.
