Hey /diy/ how can I repeat a WiFi signal around a building?
We (me and my family) are moving to an apartment building and we want to share the same internet connection. we are going to live in 3 apartments in 3 different floors, all of them facing the same direction.
We were thinking about getting good wifi repeaters and putting them next to our windows. Can this work?

>Can this work?
Depends on distance. It will certainly work if you can stick the antennas out of the windows such that they see each other. It must not be a repeater, one access point and two clients could work as well.

Will only really work if they go on the outside of the building. Wifi signal travels linearly, placing them inside near windows isn't going to help anything (unless the windows are facing a big brick wall or something that the signal could bounce off of). The signal isn't going to go out a window, then somehow curve back toward the building to go in another window.

Ok, so the router or at least an antenna must be outside

What sort of antenna should I use?

I just set up three repeaters in my home to run wifi to my garage and throughout the backyard. Here is what I've learned...

WiFi frequency travels the strongest on a horizontal path. You'd think it would be a ball shape around the modem, but this is not accurate.

Repeaters extend the range of 2.4g about 20 ft unobstructed, and 5g 10ft. Every single wall, door, piano, and sleeper couch in the way halves that distance.

If you have plaster, brick, or any sort of extremely dense wall (ie: apartment) this will not work through the walls.

Repeaters plug into receptacles, however the electrical noise can affect the signal. Avoid placing repeaters near fuse boxes and circuit breaker if at all possible.

Microwave use between you and the signal will greatly affect the internet, while the microwave is in use

Large metal objects reflect RF away from your repeater, they do not work as amplifiers

This is your best bet, placing all antenna unobstructed to one another. However you've introduced a new element, water. Water inhibits wifi frequency from traveling and muddies RF signal. This is why underwater drones are tethered, for wireless communication is not phesible in water, (or heavy rain/snow/fog)

It all depends on the antenna type/direction/gain

OP repeats will work to some degree but you can only do so much. Also 2.4ghz is over congested and full of trash, so aim for 5ghz if you can.

A small outdoor antenna, maybe a WLAN car antenna. Keep the rf cable short. Position as in pic.

>ow can I repeat a WiFi signal around a buildi
S imply, don't.
Wi-Fi is not suitable for infrastructure.
Run a wire.

If you decide to use Wi-Fi to share a signal there is no point asking here there are too many variables to guarantee it will work.

Consider leaky feeder?

Powerline ethernet should be considered. sometimes it works great, other times not. the trick is to experiment and be patient: try different outlets. if you buy a kit at Best Buy then you can return it if if doesnt work coz of their nice return policy. (at least thats the way it was 4 years ago, last time i bought something new.)

Good luck in an apartment. They use 3 phase there. Unless you're on the same phase it won't work.

Those are almost guaranteed to not work between different apartments.

not true. typically an entire apartment building will be fed from the same street transformer, so the signal will make its way to other apartments. also works between some houses. i have verified this.

If they share the same coil, yes.

But for the most part this is not reality. Apartments use residential 3 phase systems.

Yeah, it aYMMV situation. My condo complex is 40+ units and each one has it's own meter meaning that they are all separate as far as the circuit is concerned. Thankfully whatever dipshittery my neighbors are up to never affect me.

You are beyond dumb. Must be an IT guy. Wtf does noone here understand how Ethernet over power actually works? Or basic electricity? Your neighbor can totally affect your fucking circuit if they share the same coil, dumass regardless where the metering is.

I've bought dozens. Used them everywhere as temporary premanent connections in residential and industrial settings. Never an issue unless it was DOA.

Why do IT cucks have such a problem with this?

Sometimes when I make a work order to install a new run of cat from the switch it gets bumped to a lower priority due to reactive maintenance events. Can take months before they clean up the backlog.

That's why we dislike cucklords like you bud, you're the kind of person who goes "ive' got an iphone x I'm good with technology" and then gets upset that his 2.4Ghz wifi is slower than a 1Gb ethernet connection.
