/g/ has a /csg/, why don't we? surely some of you are cheap bastards that order /diy/ related stuff on ebay/aliexpress/banggood. post hauls, related projects and how you got ripped off. i'll start.

first up, this cheap bluetooth "in-wall wireless" controller that i ended up running new electrical and CAT5 for. works well, but what a pain in the ass to install if you don't have some extra electrical boxes in your walls.

next up, RGB LED droplights with seperately controllable RGB and white LEDs. going to install in the bathroom for some comfy poop time. tested them out, they're decently bright, although the mixed colors look funky sometimes. the diffusers kind of fix this, but whatever.
40$ shipped for 3 7 inch lights with controllers, 120v

chinky magic controller with app controller. it does what it says, but the instructions for wiring are atrocious. it specifically says to bypass the internal 5v to LED terminals, presumably because it can't handle any decent amount of amperage. its decent for general IA RGB fuckery but can't do anything more complicated than scrolling any combo of color you want.

I think this thread is a really good idea. Everything I order from AE is for diy projects. I'm ordering this along with some other stuff today to attempt to recycle some old laptop panels. I'm happy to share my experiences, and hopefully get some questions answered.

Have a bump, OP.

I dont have anything specific, but I want to recomend Walmart's Hyper Tough tool brand. All of it has worked great for home use, its cheap as shit, and I never see it mentioned by others on /diy/.

My only problem I ever had was that I was an idiot who didnt know the difference at the time, and bought the Ni Cad drill instead of the Li Ion drill so the battery went to shit pretty fast. Im pretty happy with the corded drill though.

/csg/ already kind of covers /diy/ stuff too, but I do buy a whole lot of shit from china.

I only got fucked over twice from around 1000 orders. Once it was on a Hakko soldering station, where it was entirely DHL's fault; they supposedly attempted to deliver it and then kept it at their warehouse for two weeks, then sent it back to the seller, lost the whole $90 I paid for it. Joke is that during the time the package was being held at their warehouse, I phoned them 4 times asking if they had the package and if there's anything wrong or any action needs to be taken, but they just said I should wait and it'll be delivered soon. Filed a complaint afterwards and they brushed it off.

Other time, I bought a very cheap quadcopter kit off Aliexpress that included a Radiolink AT9 and the frame and electronics of the quad, was some $130 total (which is a great deal for all that). Everything was okay at first, but then I tried updating the firmware on the AT9 and that bricked it. The seller didn't really give a shit and shipping cost would've been ridiculous anyway. I took it apart and it seemed like a previously RMA'd or otherwise modified AT9.
Then I went to eBay, ordered another AT9 from a seller for the regular ~$90 price, and when it arrived I opened a case for it being faulty on arrival. Swapped the first, faulty AT9 for it and sent it back to the eBay seller, with sipping now covered under PayPal's returns insurance, and got a refund on the purchase price, so in the end I didn't lose anything over this.

i'm very interested in your experience with this item. I have a few high-quality screens from a client that enjoys his computers mostly with a very tall glass of wine or in a cloud of smoke and a shower of sparks depending on the hour of day

I've been researching this hardware for several months now, and after pouring over several data sheets for the panels I have, I'm confident I can convert a 32" panel I have into a monitor/TV for less than 20 bucks. I'll be sure to share my adventure. Specific challenges for me will be converting from CCFL backlighting to LED, and finding out if the board's tuner chip (Rafael842) can bee tuned to receive ATSC broadcasts via firmware, as these boards are made for the EU market. there are some videos on YT that you can watch on some of these boards, but they're not very informative. you'll need the specific model numbers for the panels you have, then get the info in pic related which will be specific to your panels.
you'll also need to identify if your panels are LED, or CCFL. if CCFL, the number of inverters. all of the gear you'll need is available online, is just getting good data that will be the trick. you'll want to check out this guys site out as well:

If they're honest sellers, they send it back to the manufacturer anyway. Better for them to lose the $15 shipping cost than for me to lose $90 on the transmitter.

you need to carefully disassemble the taller, ID the panel, then search for "universal LCD panel controller' . look two posts up.

I don't think so, there are many people here on diy that buy off-brand, aliexpress or whatever, because built to destroy. And since there is less info about those huangzou-chink stuff as compared to, say, makita, this thread has a solid purpose.

I have to admit that i don't visit /g/, maybe that one IS cancer. idk.

Does anyone know where you can find a 1.0mH inductor for speaker crossovers?
Like this shit here https://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-10mh-18-awg-i-core-inductor-crossover-coil--257-550 minus the shipping cost.
All the ones that I find on aliexpress are really expensive for some reason. Complete crossovers are somehow cheaper.

Buy your own wire, and get a ferrite rod/toroid. You can calculate approximately how many turns of wire you need using this tool: http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/electric/indsol.html

Chinked: I ordered some 25mm nylon rods and they arrived not just horribly oversized, but also bowed and look like some chink cut them to length with a handsaw or angle grinder instead of a chop saw.

Good: Arilux MR16 LED bulbs (from banggood) serve me well. Very bright. I use them on my bike, run off a tung lin bottle dynamo (from amazon) that outputs way more voltage than the 12v it claims.

Mujingfang makes some nice handplanes for the cost. They're wood and best for the price range, though not amazing by any stretch. Downside is that they use indonesian mahogany, ebony, and shungee rosewood, which are trade-restricted now. That does not stop them from doing it, but it's got more ethical concerns beyond sweatshop labor. Some sellers offer just the blades, which are absolutely fantastic but a bitch to get tuned the first time. I am not sure if they're T10 (chinese variety of high carbon tool steel) or some grade of HSS, but T10 steel is also highly regarded among people who can point out the name of it.

What else... I have a step bit, drillpro brand and it works well. I ordered some fishing line off a specific listing on banggood - the reviews said it was actually wholesale price for daiwa brand (japanese brand) and that's what arrived, but I've no idea if it's a knockoff or not - I don't plan to use it for fishing.

I have one of those little nitecore tube keychain lights. It's pretty handy and reliable for 10$. Also a couple small rechargeable 10w work lights, one arrived with a cracked case but is functional, which is why I have 2. Luminous tape is another thing that's a safe grab.

Inside a 3-prong chink power plug adapter, this one's EU to UK. They also do similar funny tricks with 3-prong power cables, always test the ground for continuity.
