How do I track someone without them seeing me, /diy/?

A friend of mine is paying me to track his girlfriend whom he suspects is cheating on him but I have no clue how to go about this Are there any safe methods of following someone and keeping tabs on them?

I know this sounds like some stupid James Bond wannabe shit but my friend is giving me straight cash out of his paranoia. I don't expect to find anything.

Are there any GPS trackers, video surveillance systems, anything like that I can use?

I live in a metropolitan area in the United States and have access to 3G from a smartphone or a tablet computer if that helps.

You should have some fun with it. Attach a camera to an RC helicopter. If you absolutely don't want to lose her, use a vehicle tracker and find a really hidden place in her handbag.

Okay, if you are starting from scratch, you will need more than that.

If you hang-out with her at the bar and stuff, you can probably slip a GPS transmitter in her purse. You could disguise it as something she would be carrying (matchbook, etc). The battery would last long enough for you to retrieve it at a later time.

iPhone has a handy app that broadcasts your location all the time. You'll have to find some way to enable it on her phone though, that's if she even has an iphone.

People are unobservant. Just dress casually (dress shirt, slacks, jacket), check her important movements, and always have a reason to do something nearby.

If you're tailing her, go about a block back. If she goes into a building with one main entrance (store, etc.), chill outside. Bring a newspaper. Have a reason to be where you are, and don't avoid eye contact. Act like she's a random person on the street.

If she knows you well, you're fucked, because she'll recognize you, and you'll need to know a lot more than you can pick up on the 4chan.

Seriously, GPS and all that technology shit is no replacement for footslogging. Besides, people aren't that hard to follow. If you need to learn how to do it, practice on random people. Just learn to be unobtrusive, and if she's cheating on him, you'll figure it out in a couple of days. People are surprisingly blatant. Just figure out when she's telling him she has 'business' that takes an oddly-large amount of time, and tail her then.

if she isn't cheating your friend doesn't view her as trustworthy anyway and she should be dumped

You might have to borrow her phone to slip a custom background app on it.

That would let you know the general area she's in. Then you could just tail her with a camera.

Well here is her story.

She used to secretly date two guys before she knew my friend. None of these guys ever knew about each other until the day she broke it off. Now that she's with my friend for a while, he's just now heard about it and he's suspicious if she might be up to something. They don't live together yet, so she often can get away with spending days without seeing him by "being out with friends" although naturally my friend doesn't believe this.

I would normally take his money and bullshit him, but this sounds like I could have some fun, so might as well crank it up to "MacGyver".

but also just stay back in the crowd dont make yourself to obvious. If you have to follow her in a vehicle just stay atleast 2 car lengths away from her at all times. if she stops on the side of the road or at a store dont pull in behind her. drive past and pull in or turn around once your sure she is staying put.

Def. bring a camera but dont be too obvious you are taking pictures. hell you could fully photograph the white house and just act like your taking pictures of your family posing without anyone knowing any better if your good enough at it.
