1237412 No.1237412 [Reply] [Original]

About a year and a half ago at this point I got into making paracord (nylon) bullwhips for some strange reason. It started out with this one channel on YouTube called nickswhilshop from his viral video called "how to make a paracord bullwhip". I'm now working on my 13th whip (4 being snakewhips), and show no sign of stopping. Im dumping pictures of whips I made and would love to see if anyone else on here is a fan of whipmaking too.

Pretty cool, you should make a few of them out of rawhide, roo hide and leather though you could probably sell a couple for decent money.
Stockwhips are pricey (around 4-500 for an 8ft one) and can be hard to come by as there's not a lot of people making them. Just a thought as it could offset some of your hobby costs once in a while

>> No.1237694

Nice work OP, I really like >>1237415 It kind of gives the impression of fire, I might make one like this for myself.

I've been braiding and cracking whips for about 5 years now after seeing adam winrich's "fire whip" show live at the Texas renaissance festival. Since then I've made 4 Paracord whips(6ft, 2 matched 4.5 ft, and a 3ft), 2 leather whips(6ft, and 12ft) and recently finished a Kevlar wick fire whip(8ft)(that I'm frankly to scared to try to light, I know it works but what if...)
I have a 6ft long handled bullwhip, that I do most of my target cracking with. Plus I have several "whip" shaped ropes on handles that my family thinks I can use.

Currently I just go commissioned to make a 8 foot paracord whip in exchange for 2 full rolls of od green paracord, so with that I'm making myself a 50 foot 16 plait whip. I've finished the core, first bolster, and belly of the whip and let me tell you, it's fun as hell to crack, but doing it for an hour made me sore.

That's awesome anon. Do you have any pics of them I can see? And also how do you crack a 50 foot whip? That sounds ridiculously hard

>> No.1238092

>>1237706
Basically you can only throw overhand, underhand and side arm flicks with the 50 ft whip. You really have to be able to set up the whip in front and behind you straight then throw the whip like you are throwing any one of the 3 cracks mentioned above. It's really cool to see the delay as the loop travels down the whip.

it was an analog manual control cable for an old destroyed piece of machinery(like pic related) it had a thickness of around 1/8 to 3/16 inch

the tight spring didn't really grip the inner layer.
I really need to get me some more of that stuff to make another one
I used 2 strands of spring to make the core and a single layer of braid so the cross-section was ovate.

this means the whip would stay straight under it's own spring tension in one direction and flex cleanly in a horizontal plane. makes it REALLY GOOD for S&M play.

I sold that thing and regret it now...

spirals?

the spirals were a weave called jacobs ladder which i accidentally learned. kinda got the idea for these whips from it.

it cracks beautifully.

i do have problems with rings opening but mostly in the handle as its under the most stress when swinging.i have since started welding the rings closed which doubles the amount of time to make one. Im pretty inexperienced with welding so rings will still pop open from time to time.

At first it was 100% nickel silver as thats what i had on hand. i have switched to stainless steel for welding purposes. it also has a bit more hardness and slightly lighter.

moslty make the rings on a mandrel. i'll sometimes order pre made rings from various chainmail sites to try out new ideas or materials.

Most people consider SOTN to be the first Metroidvania in the Castlevania series. The earlier games, not counting Vampire Killer (which was a computer release and never came out in the states) were linear. Also, Metroid came out before the orginal Castlevania. So, Metroid is the game that 'gave birth' to the genre. Even then, there are earlier games that could be considered part of the genre, it's just that Metroid was the first one to be really successful.

I do something like that, but I end up with a near seamless eye that I attach to a similar eye on the end of a core-strand and another one for the cracker

my process does require a much longer fall though...but it transfers cleanly from thong to fall and fall to cracker

Electrical tape is a nightmare. Take my advice PLEASE before it’s too late and use artificial sinew + cloth hockey tape. You can get enough artificial sinew for 10 whips from someone online called the leather guy for 17$, just make sure it’s the 8oz kind. When oh get both of those, the sinew and hockey tape, put the hockey tape on first like you would with normal electrical tape and then bind over that with sinew. It is the absolute best way I’ve found so far to avoid kinks and creases in your whips, plus it makes them nice and ridgid all the way out.

How strong do they hold?
Wherever I look at a whip I feel like if I hold it by the knot and swing it, I'll end up with knot still in my hand and whip sailing off in an arc.

>> No.1264947

>>1264930
If you do it right the knot will stay in place for years. I first put a layer of artificial sinew, then the handle and leather to round it, bind that with artificial sinew, then finally wrap a piece of leather around it, bind it extremely tight with artificial sinew as tight as you can, and a layer of electrical tape to just hold the artificial sinew in place. I finish it off by pushing 12 nails (4 rows of three vertically) into the knot foundation. Finally I wrap a thin layer of electrical tape on, a little more artificial sinew to hold the knot in place, and tie the actual knot. Once it’s done I tighten the knot and wax it. All that combined and it won’t move even if you wanted it to.

>sextra stiffness

counter arguments
if you live anyplace like where I live you cannot keep the whip in the car or have it outside for more than a few minutes before the wax melts and gores flying with every crack...

>> No.1265315

>>1265155
It binds with the paracord so leaving it in a hot car wouldn’t do much damage to it. As for weightening the whip, not extremely significantly; only a few ounces. Maybe like four or five. And waterproofing it just makes it so you can crack it in wet environments without it getting waterlogged

dear OP, I started making paracord whips at the tail end of 2013. I too started by finding nick's whip shop channel on youtube. I'd love to share some pics of my whips, but they're all on my old phone... maybe tomorrow i'll try and dig it out and charge it and see if i can pull them off it, as most of my whips were given away as gifts. I know LOTS of tricks now, if anyone has any specific questions plz ask. I also have a book to recommend for anyone serious about the hobby, "How to Make Whips" by Ron Edwards. Of course, it deals exclusively with leather whips but it has all sorts of cool patterns of plaits you can do and lots of tips... and really, the only thing that doesn't translate directly from leather whips to paracord ones is that we cannot taper our strands, which is easy enough to work around by plaiting more strands and dropping them faster. Also on that note, if you haven't already, check out bernie46 on youtube. He has some legit tutorials on roohide whips but lots of great tricks that translate to paracord.

it dulled the greys and whites. it mutes a lot of colors and brings down the gloss

it looks to me like the difference between a brand new whip and one that's been used to beat people for several years.

the wax makes it look grimy and less clean, like its had a run-in with too much skin-oil and sweat.

>> No.1280053

There was only light gray on the thong. Personally I like the gloss it gives the whip because it emulates real treated leather whips. As for the handle i think it really improved it. The colors were dulled down just enough to be bearable to look at it
