Why did you put those horizontal bars on the bottom of the table? Kinda ruin it, plus you can't put a chair under...

>> No.1262810

I don't pix, but I've made a wine bottle holder, two "antique" beer cases, and used palette wood as part of the new bar for a diy upgrade for a store-bought tiki bar.
Also, I use a screw gun to screw pieces down onto my workbench, then use that for glue-ups, layout, or just holding a piece in place while I sand or plane it.
You can even wedge a work piece into place by leaving a few extra inches on one or two sides, then you put opposing wedges in the gap and hammer them together to clamp the work piece in place.
I did that yesterday to hold a 2" slab of walnut while I hand-planed it.

>> No.1262819

>>1262808
>Why did you put those horizontal bars on the bottom of the table?
They go with the bar stools above (>>1262798).
In the stools, the foot rails make the stool stronger.
Without them, each leg sticks out about 2' from the body of the stool, 2' 8" for the table.
The foot rail ties the legs together, making the whole table more rigid.
Yeah, you can't put a chair under it, But you could put a shelf under there for more storage.
It was originally meant to be a stand for a guinea-pig cage. They keep all his food and stuff in a big plastic container that would fit under the table.
Now it's probably going on my patio, and I'll use it with bar stools.

Wood is porous and wicks liquids into its fibers. Pallets also use rough sawn and unsealed wood. Anything spilled on a pallet is on it forever. Pallets spend a good portion of their lives sitting on loading docks, in the backs of trucks, or on the ground in a parking lot. Hell, where do you even get your pallets from? Probably the loading dock behind a grocery store or something. You know, where they keep the dumpsters, the homeless people go for a piss, and the diesel trucks and forklifts drive around.

"But I got it from..." Bullshit. Pallets are not single-use items. Just because you stole yours from behind Toys R Us and saw then unloading teddy bears off of it doesn't mean it wasn't used for something nasty before that.

"But it says it was treated..." Treated with what? When? HT means heat treated. They put it in a kiln for a bit. KD means they put it in a kiln but for longer. When did they do it? Maybe it was 6 months ago, maybe it was 10 years ago. What has happened to it since? Chemically treated is even worse. If it is old enough or from Asia it might be treated with Methyl Bromide (marked MB), a pesticide. Yeah, that sounds great to make a cutting board or dining room table out of. Also, they only do that shit when they manufacture/remanufacture them. Treating is used to kill insects and sometimes bacteria, not get rid of whatever nasty shit got spilled on it.

"But it doesn't look dirty" So what? What if they spilled industrial cleaners on it? What if the last user was Terminex and they spilled a bunch of clear liquid rat poison on it? What if, after someone spilled a bunch of old milk or whatever on it, it sat outside in the rain for a few days and got 'cleaned'? Wood wicks liquids and whatever is spilled on it can end up INCHES into the wood. As it sits in your house this stuff can leach out and into the air or onto the surface of the wood even if you seal it.

In the end why risk it? To save $20 on lumber costs? Really?

In North Americanada almost all pallets are treated with chemicals. This way the absolute shit wood they're made of rots slower and resists insects. Pallets have had a a life of getting dragged in the juicy bottoms of truck beds, soaked in muddy outdoors yards, plus whatever's been carried on them may have leaked or spilled additional contamination into the wood.

Pallet wood is full of dust, dirt and sand, which dulls tools faster

Pallet wood is full of chemicals that are made airborne by cutting/sanding, and will outgas and leech out over time.

Pallets good enough for fourniture building are still good for their sole purpose, transport. Pallets too beaten up for transport are now also pretty useless as material for building.

Also removing all those nails while keeping some material usable, that looks like such a pain!

Unless there are absolutely no other sources of reclaimed wood in your area, don't use perfectly good shipping pallets for building stuff.

Never burn pallet wood unless you can reliably know it's chemical free. Not even outdoors.

If you do build stuff with pallet wood, work outside and/or with a good respirator (and shave your neckbeard to make a good seal).

And especially, anything built with pallets must remain outside, and never come in contact with children, pets, edible plants or your naked ass.

Nothing further, your honour

To the bar stools/table, sawbuck and firewood storage guys, good job. I would never have the dedication myself, but you guys made nice things with total crap!

there's a reason for that.
there's really no point in using pallets. the shittest grades of wood go like this:
paper mill feedstock
pallet grade
fence grade

pallet wood is cheap, you can even buy it at a hardware store. if you want decent cheap wood you can buy pine fencing boards and sort them at the store, just dont grab the ones with giant knots and cracks.

Pallets are wonderful, versatile material suitable for any construction man can imagine. Roman forts were built from pallets to withstand barbarian attacks. Most of Rome itself was built from pallets but they were burned when it was sacked leaving stone leftovers which give the wrong impression that stone was a primary material. The Great Wall of China is actually made of pallet mortar. Pallet armor makes the Abrams main battle tank immune to rockets, missiles and main gun projectiles. It is forbidden to photograph the pallets so you never see them, Pallets were the first rafts capable of transoceanic travel. Primitive peoples settled the Americas by sailing pallet rafts from Asia. These were quite luxurious and about the size of a Nimitz class aircraft carrier. England was conquered by the Normans using pallet bridges across the Channel, and castles were stormed by stacking pallets in stair-like arrangement s outside the walls. The palletbuchet was a deadly weapon which flung pallets like frisbees into enemy ranks, slaughtering targets by the hundreds. Pallet gliders were the first aircraft, proven by ancient Sumerian texts. Pallets have incredible crush strength, making them ideal for bathyspheres to descend to the bottom of the Marianas trench. Leakproof and comfy, they are used for classified undersea military research communities holding thousands of sailors and scientists. These are serviced by pallet submarines delivering shipping containers full of imitation crabmeat. Failure to use pallets in modern construction has cost mankind dearly. Earthquakeproof, and fireproof if treated, a World Trade Center made of pallets would easily sustain strikes by up to 90 fully fuelled airliners. No steel beams to melt would have saved thousands of lives. Pallets are also healthy. It's proven that children birthed on a pallet are happier and better adjusted than those birthed in hospital. Pallets can be ground up to produce health tonics, and nails contain useful iron.

You can make a sawmill out of pallets as the ancient Ugandans did when they built pallet skyscrapers. They consumed all the wood in North Africa, hence the desert, and many died transporting it south, but the structures were epic tributes to the Dindu culture.

US cities are replaced every five minutes and suburbs develop even faster, so wood is fine for constant change. Houses are disposable. Why spend money on concrete when a tent would probably do the job? That's why Americans disassemble pallets, denail them, and glue them together into logs for resawing into structural timber. The nails are collected for forging into new saw blades.

Ideally, someone would design an immortal Lego Pallet from which everything could be produced, from nanometer sized pallets up to say the size of Australia, which will need replacing when the Chinese finish buying it out then tow it to make a land bridge to Taiwan.

My girlfriend had a lamp in the corner that she wanted to keep there. She broke it by accident right before I threw this up. And jesus christ, I grabbed two pallets on a whim on my way home because I was bored. I made it in an hour pretty much as a first draft until I can make something more permanent. Dont call me a goddamn hipster. And yeah, I dont really listen to that turntable. It was my grandfathers last gift to me, and Id feel wrong just tucking it away. He came across the O Brother, Where Art Thou soundtrack on vinyl, and bought the only player he could at the time so i could actually listen to it. Goddamn he was cool.
Anyways, I have two more, one's newer with a kick ass speaker setup, and a early 60s desk model where the speakers tuck away behind sliding doors. Shits pretty neato. Found it in the house Im fixing up. Its going to be a beaut when I finish cleaning it up.
