1237103 No.1237103 [Reply] [Original]

I'm trying to make fins for my Mazda, but its complex rounded shape is making it very difficult to connect anything on it. How can I get the correct shape to cut the bottom of the fins into so that I could weld them on?

Make the meal you wish to cut an inch longer than you need. Place in position and place a 1inch wheel with a pencil in the center against the side and scribe a line that follows the contours. Cut for a perfect fit.

That's a great suggestion, but unfortunately it's not enough in this situation. It's not a smooth rounded surface the fin should fit onto, but from the front edge it should also meld onto the rear pillar between the rear window and rear door.

>>1237111

This is the only way I can think of too, but it will take days and even then it's success is uncertain. I got the current measurements with cardboard stencils, but with flexible cardboard and no points to ancor it on the results have been mostly useless.

OP, have you considered cutting the car itself?
Sure, it sounds drastic, but consider this:
cut quarter panel parallel to fin, about 1" inside future fin location
bend up to match fin wall
rivet car metal to inside of fin

The rear pillar part would be more complicated, but similar.

Cutting the supporting structures is illegal, to a ridiculous degree. According to the vehicle inspection, you can't even cut pieces off the fenders or the hood, which doesn't even make sense from a structural viewpoint, but it's the Finnish law and why this car has been more difficult to work with than I expected.

>>1237135

It doesn't even fit where it's supposed to now, and that would be a ridiculous amount of putty anyway.

They look fucking terrible so why bother?

If you're determined to ruin another car that doesn't deserve it, get the dimensions as close as possible and then fill the interface with the body with filler.

Expect the parts to flutter and crack the surrounding paint (assuming you can afford a respray for this section you are ruining), spend the rest of the days enjoying your shit fins on a car that doesn't deserve them.

I couldn't get the playdough today, so I finished the rear end of the fin instead. It takes some smoothing, but once its painted it should look good.

I've been planning to raise the suspension and put on larger tires, but I don't know yet how the rest of the car is going to turn out. I originally planned to do a mad max -style car, but with the strict Finnish vehicle laws there was almost nothing I could have done in that style. Let me learn you some good shit, OP.

You need to use CAD.

No not CAD like the computer stuff that only engineer's use. CAD the Cardboard Aided Design tool.

Get a bunch of cardboard or paper, and use it to fabricate a template four your vehicle. What do I mean by this? Start with just a sheet, this sheet is representative of a sheet of steel you will use for fabrication. Cut and bend this sheet into your desired shape. The idea is to keep it one solid piece, but for curves you may find cutting small sections/wedges can be used to form curves nicely when taped together. The entire sheet of cardboard (with all the cuts and such) becomes the template which you will use to cut your sheet steel. Once you cut it, apply the same bends, and you will have successfully fabricated the part you were interested.

Yeah I'd definitely roll with .03 wire. Double check you've got the wiring correct (gas-less usually has your ground clamp on the positive terminal, or at least in my experience).
I won't hate on your opinion for putting fins on the mazda. Mainly because you seem determined to do it no matter what logic anyone has to not do it. So fuck em, don't forget the underglow.
Sand down the paint, cut a slit just a hair wider than the metal fin width for the length you wish to run them. Tape off 6"+ around the hole to protect the rest of the paint.Tack passively, as it'll likely burn through quick. grind smooth-ish and re-level with your chosen filler (bondo, jb weld, whatever) and make it smooth with a ball wrapped in high grade sandpaper so the transition is bump-less. Double check by spraying primer over your working area and lightly sand, you'll see the dips and pits that need smoothing further or require more filler and another resanding to level once again.

Then prime, paint that shit and enjoy your creation.

I still can't find lead in any Finnish car stores so tin is definitely the local material of choice for whatever reason, but apparently the primer used to it is very dangerous as it makes the paint peel and metal rust if there's even a little of it left before painting.

How reliable is bondo, anyway? It sounds strange that such a common substance would be so bad.

>> No.1253113

>>1253056
Bondo has a bad reputation because people do dumb shit with it like fill giant rust holes, fill entire crumpled panels, or put it in a cars frame that they then paint to cover up rot when selling the vehicle. It's perfectly fine for your use case. Also, you find lead in fishing tackle suppliers.

That might be true, but unavoidable.

Anyway, I've been trying to look for instructions on using tin and lead, and they appear to use the exact same technique. However, while I've heard that you should wash the surfaces with cold water either at the end or some other point, I haven't found that from any instructions or youtube videos I've watched. When should I do it, since as mentioned, the material used to prime the metal for tinning is a severe rust hazard.

ive done firefighter training and learned two things relevant to this bullshit conversation

1. older fire suits are literally just made out of cotton. thick cotton, probably rubberized as well, but still just cotton at the end of the day. cotton chars slowly rather than bursting into flame. wool is similar.

2. getting your suit wet is bad because it gets hotter quicker but you dont get cooked alive by steam. if that were a thing you wouldn't use water in fighting fires because then as soon as anyone did anything with a hose everyone would be killed

trying to smooth solder with your fucking hand is still a dumb idea though. even if you dont injure yourself or damage your glubs, that doesnt sound like a precise or clean way to manage a blob of hot metal. even doing that with cold glue is asking for a shitty joint and a gummy hand. you'd probably want some kind of hard and smooth trowel-like device

Now cars are built faster, lighter, more efficient and to go further with less maintenance. These are facts not a matter of opinion. Im about to replace the subframe on a car that is only 7 years old.
the thin sheet metal of the "frame" of my 20 year old car only just now gave out, and may still easily be repairable.
A few years before that and cars had actual frames on them and wernt made of nothing but sheet metal, thats what I envy, a real frame.

Blame your local government for salting the roads. The old stuff seems to last longer because it was properly cared for, or simply not used for extended periods. Here in Texas, anything can go twenty years without a speck of rust simply due to the climate and lack of salt. Yes, I can. Salt plays absolute hell with anything that has any less rustproofing than cletus' 8" lifted mud rig with a .75" thick coat of POR15 across the entire undercarriage. It tore older vehicles apart just as badly as the newer ones. Super-quality steel is gonna go almost as quickly as cheap chinesium in that sort of standing brine environment, it's just too damn harsh. There are alternatives to road salt but governments just default to it because it's the cheap and easy route.

I was supposed to do one fin in a day, but grinding away that bondo took the entire yesterday afternoon. Today I finished the other fin to the same condition in a couple of hours, and now I'm struggling to get both fins bondo smooth so I'd get to paint the fins before they rust from the ambient moisture.

The paintjob isn't easy either. Turns out the paint in this car has some glass beads in it, so painting the fins with similar paint requires using a dark undercoat. You ARE doing it wrong. Bondo needs to be applied as close to the desired surface finish as you can get it. Apply thinner layers if you have to. But applying it in lumpy layers like in >>1260106 only results in more work.

Also avoid working in really low grits if you don't know what you're doing as they tend to take chunks out of bondo that then need to be refilled.

Get yourself a spray can of filler primer and in between coats of bondo, but after sanding it until it's as close to perfect you can get, hit it liberally with the spray to fill up smaller pinholes and imperfections. Sand very lightly with a high grit before applying bondo again.

Remember also that bondo is brittle and using it along a joint like that may end up with it cracking.

You're obviously not going to perfectly match the color of the car with spray paint, so best bet would be to fade to a different color for the fins.
First you would have to sand the black primer flush with the original finish, then using super fine grit sandpaper (like 2000 grit) scuff the original finish a few inches FURTHER than you'll be laying down paint. Try not to sand the finish entirely off, you're just aiming for light stuffing to get paint to adhere to the surface.
Only tape off the windows.

Following this guide, you may be able to get a half assed fade going.
https://youtu.be/elFKLXVQNzQ

In his example, his base color was yellow. Your base color will be the car's original finish, working your way back to the ends of the fin.

When done with that, hit the whole thing with light layers of clear coat, not worrying about spraying further than the original finish. In theory, the clear coat should fill in the light scuffing in the original finish and create a much softer physical transition. The color fade will create a softer visual transition.

After sanding and before painting, it is advised you clean all surfaces that may be painted with mineral spirits or some other solvent.
If you get any undesired paint spatter on other parts of the car, it should clean up with an automotive clay bar after it has dried.

This will not look particularly good, it's just one way to do it with the minimum of specialized tools.

I have now smoothed the dark grey base paint, and since tomorrow is the last day of the year with +6° temperatures, I'll HAVE to finish painting the car that day while the sun is up.

Base is finished and I have the top paint ready, but do I need to use some kind of wax/varnish to protect the apparently extremely sensitive paintwork? I have pic related in stock, but I've heard it might not be suitable for cars.

It's more a matter of exceeding the general expectations. Dude was originally aiming for a shitty mad max look, but his country's gay laws prevented that.
Nobody expected him to be pulling off anything in the realm of passible, but the paint really did a good job of covering up how ghetto and inexperienced the kid is.
I credit that more to the fairly accurate paint matching than anything else, because as you pointed out, he really half assed painting. A more clear picture would probably show obvious runs, but whatever.

Overall he did a pretty decent mod-job considering his lack of appropriate tools and knowledge. Who the fuck cares if it looks like shit compared to what someone else could produce? He seems happy with the results and we all shared lulz along the way.

I'm not saying don't talk shit or anything like that, because that's half the fun--just explaining why some people are saying it looks good. Peoples expectations were just so low we all expected something much more laughable. I seriously doubt OP is posting fake replies to simulate props.

Extra lights. I think they're absolutely vital for the acars appearance, as without them the front of the car would be absolutely generic and indistinguishable from any other similar car. I'd definitely like to do more to it, but once again the rounded shape of the car makes it difficult to work with. Especially since even the edges of the hood are curved.

I've never heard of krylon before. From what I've learned it's difficult to make car parts weatherproof, so does this fare better in outdoor conditions?

Chrome spray paint barely looks chrome. More like silver but couldnt hurt to try.

And i forgot about the harsh environment over there.

My bro SWEARS by rustoleum bedliner. Its like 12 bucks a can but it wouldnt take 2 i dont think. He's the fire cheif and uses it all over their abused equipment. Should do just fine. Here it is at $7 burgers https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B003CT49B2/ref=mp_s_a_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1508880283&sr=8-2&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_FMwebp_QL65&keywords=rust+oleum+bed+liner

In fact, if you get a gallon and some rollers and keep it stirred up good you can do your entire care when you are done modding if u want. Solves your sanding priblems also. Just hit it with 89 grit and maybe 120 if u want and primer your mods. Then get sanding sponges and wetsand the shiny paint on your car until it looks "foggy."

Shit will outlive you probably if you hit the bottom also.

Cars typically didn't get six digit odometers until the mid 80s. Many still had five digit odometers in the early 90s.
When I was young it was a really big deal for a car to last long enough for the odometer to 'turn over' (revert to 00000|0). The junkyards were full of cars with less than 100,000 actual miles on them.
Plugs, points, and condensers were usually worn out at 20,000 miles. Oil change recommendation was for 1,000 miles. I spent many weekends working on my car so I could drive it during the week.
Computer control of the engine and fuel injection (along with better manufacturing practices) has dramatically increased longevity of modern engines.
My current vehicle has been 276,000 miles and likely has many miles left.
