Buy or rent a generator NOW. Inverter and a battery can get you by for a day or so charging your phone, but that fridge doesn't run itself.
Buy water.
Buy propane for your gas grill so you can cook with the power out. Even a camping stove works to boil water.
Buy batteries. For $5 a (rechargeable) USB battery stick can keep your phone going for a while. Put your phone in airplane mode when not in use to conserve battery life.
Put everything up high, in your attic if need be. Anything on the ground is fair game for sewage/drain off water damage.
Buy a shit ton of 5 gallon gas cans and fill them up. 6 minimum.
Texas fag here, it's hella hard to get gas for our cars right now after the hurricane. I had to travel to the next city to find some, and even then they were almost out.
Check your flood plan. If you plan to stay home buy a cheap inflatable boat just incase. $100 is nothing to be able to get out safely.
If you know it's going to flood and you can't get your car out, at least remove the battery terminals to keep it from shorting out.
Buy plywood today and board up your windows, it runs out quickly.
Turn off your main breaker outside the house to prevent shortages inside.
Make friends with someone who has a boat.
Buy a camping solar shower so you can boil water and then bathe. Camping supplies is your friend right now. Check /out/ for further survival tips.
Fill the bathtub with water for flushing toilets, etc.
Buy a Yeti/RTIC or equivalent and plenty of ice.

And most importantl if need be, just get the hell out of dodge. Nothing is worth your life.

Most of that is made unnecessary by a farm and canning as well as wells and springs.
I would have a nice 2000 gallon cistern uphill feeding the house with pressurized water.
Freeze driers are expensive and use up a lot of power. Once they get under 1000 bucks we can talk.
Raise bees. Enjoy infinite honey.
You don't need that much sugar. Not unless you plan on making alcohol and you can make that from Jerusalem artichokes without it.
+1 on the rice though. Great staple and you would be surprised how much you would need just to supplement your diet. 1500 calories per lb. granted you would only eat half that a day as a supplement but you would need at least 200 lbs of rice per year per person. I go for 7 years as a goal. 1400 lbs of rice. Thats about 400 bucks in rice per person.
Can rack is useful but eventually you will run out of metal cans and go to yearly crops you grow and can. Better investment is good canners, jars and lids.
Lots of ammo is always good for trade and defense. Consider getting a flint lock black powder rifle and making your own powder. It costs less than 2 bucks a lb when you buy in bulk. You could have YEARS of black powder and lead vs what you could stock pile and preserve. Those primers and shells need protecting. Oxygen absorbers and desiccant in mylar to protect the ammo long term. You still need to worry about the manufacturers making the primers with short shelf life now...
With black powder its 5 gallon sealed buckets with the sulfur and potassium nitrate. Charcoal you just make from wood on hand. Willow is best. You need a tumbler with non sparking balls (lead) in them. Harbor freight sells a gem tumbler that works great. Low power as well but you can make your own easily. Dig a pit and run an extension cord to it.
Dont forget to stockpile lead.
Propane as well. Never goes bad.
eventually all stockpiles go away and your stuck with the resources on site. Wood, water and sunshine for most.

It doesn't take a lot of solar to run a freezer or fridge, especially modern units or DC units. DC is the best. Typically they are on the bleeding edge of efficiency vs an AC unit and after the inverter runs an AC fridge it wastes typically 12% of the power plus its self draw which for an inverter big enough to run a fridge is 7-12 watts. I have a sundanzer that uses 800 watts a day on a 90 degree day(actually runs around 600-700 at moderate temps). So about 220-250 KW a year vs An ac unit that even at the same efficiency would burn an extra 120 KW a year from self draw and inefficiency. 300 AH or two sets of golf cart batteries and a 30 amp controller with 400 watts of solar run it 24/7 365 and the batteries last a LOT longer with the very mild cycling. Even on cloudy days. Usually costs about 20-30 amps of power at night so very trivial on a set like that. 250 bucks in batteries, 300-400 for the solar and 50 for the charge controller. Costs less than a efficient and top dollar inverter. Modified sine wave is a waste. You piss near 50% of your power away.
They sell DIY kits to make your own which is 10x better than buying. If i had to do it again I would go for another sundanzer, good quality but upright I would go with a dometic kit and make my own with ultra thicc insulation. Extra thicc. 8 inches+. You do get diminishing returns but insulation is cheap and the more you add the longer the batteries last.
If your going to waste money on a yeti, spend a few bucks extra and get a dc portable chest freezer. They run around 500 bucks. Some under.

wew

>Consider getting a flint lock black powder rifle
Get a load of this faggot. Wheelock or matchlock > flintlock. Also a modern girandoni is best. If you have gone through a lifetime of (modern/smokeless) powder, you're already fucked.
Oops, I guess I never mentioned that.

>You could have YEARS of black powder and lead vs what you could stock pile and preserve.
Modern powder has a much lower pressure curve than black, there is no reason to stockpile black. (haven't looked into cost/shot, so I could be wrong)

>mylar
That's one route. There is also just vacuum sealing with a handful of molecular sieves tossed in.

> non sparking balls (lead)
There is also brass, bronze, everything in between, nickel alloys, etc

>Propane as well. Never goes bad.
It does leak, and if it does start, then you're fucked in terms of a proper fix. Propane is fantastic, but don't forget naturally liquid fuels.

>eventually all stockpiles go away and your stuck with the resources on site. Wood, water and sunshine for most.
The most important thing.

>> No.1245895

>>1245891
Beyond volcanic activity and radiation affecting my crops what would stop me from growing food? Most of those disasters are for only a year or two. Stockpiles can hold us over, plus canning is stockpiling. I already have the garden up and running. Growing is always cheaper than buying and healthier to boot. Glass jar canning also tends to last longer than metal canning in the right conditions (cool, dry and no sunlight). I have pork thats 8 years old and its still good and damn tasty.

You don't stockpile black. You stockpile the components because of shelf life, which is very good when its in its individual form and price. Smokeless powder or store bought black powder costs 10x what it costs to make your own.
Vacuum sealing is fine for short term and frozen meat but I prefer mylar for its durability. 7 mil mylar is pretty bullet proof, tough and keeps pretty much everything out (sans rodents, thats what the bucket is for).
I prefer lead because of the cheap cost. I have buckets and buckets of it. So cheap. Usually on spot with lead price at the scrap yard.
I plan on experimenting with it soon to make lead acid batteries.
Yes it does leak but in proper conditions that propane tank will far outlast any stabilized gasoline. It also tends to make engines last longer. Very clean fuel.
If i had a choice it would be a 100 lb tank in the basement or two for emergencies or genny but if i really had a choice I would get a lister engine and run it off straight crude or natural gas (both can be free in my area). Lister engines and listeroids are the fucking shit. 50K+ hours out of them and they can run just about on anything.

>dat girandoni
Never heard of it, looked it up. My penis is intrigued. 700 bucks but nice. How does the power compare though? Can the bullets be cast?
I still feel like a very simple black powder rifle would be a better long term bet. If the quality of the air rifle you buy isn't tip top its onyl a matter of time when it breaks. So can a black powder rifle but they have a lot less parts and what parts they do have can be more easily fabricated than an air rifle.
