Hi /DIY/

So, I am about to receive $5000. I am 26 and living in an apartment just working a shit job to pay bills and hopefully save up some money. This $5000 is a god send.
I would like to use this money wisely, however. What are your suggestions for what to do with it, with the goal being I want to eventually live on my own sustainable land, or house, or property. I'm interested in gardening and farming and solar power and being generally self sustainable.
What would you do with this money?

Everyone who wants to bury a container should do so! Follow your dreams and ignore the haters. Your initiative will be rewarded with success!

Numerous containers survived direct hits from 30mm A-10 "Warthog" cannon during the Iraq war. The springy corrugations dissipate energy and the projos bounce off. The immortal Corten steel shells last centuries even without paint, which is only decorative. The US Navy has a fleet of containers at the bottom of the Marianas trench where they dock submarines made from containers for underwater replenishment. Hawaii successfully used lava flow to encase containers to make attractive tourist lodges. Transatmospheric scramjet powered containers have been developed into launch platforms for smaller containers to be used in the post-Brexit EU space containerstation. North Korea replaced their old dug shelters under mountains with containers painted like mountains. (The insides are painted with cute anime characters to boost morale.) Elon Musk prototyped an electric container to replace the Tesla since the container is more aesthetically appealing than the car and has a lot more battery room. The mayor of Detroit has decided to replace his decaying city with containers. The old buildings will be demolished and the rubble hauled off in other containers, loaded onto rafts made of containers, and shipped to China via the St. Laurence seaway where it will be ground up and the metal residue used to make more containers. US Navy SEALS stealthily infiltrate enemy ports using containers cunningly disguised as containers. Israel is solving the Palestinian problem by storing them in containers. (Germany tried to solve the Jewish problem using wooden freight cars, but the container hadn't been invented yet.) Donald Trumps border wall will be easily affordable if built from containers. Any Beaners who slip in by other routes can be detained in containers then trucked to Beanland where containers will be donated as housing.

Sorry, I just felt like shitposting today. I don't think $5000 is enough to get a plot of land anywhere but bumfuck nowhere, let alone build something regulated on it. As I see it you've got two options. First one is to go full mobile home (no regulations), buy a used camper off craigslist and renovate it. Even a shitty transit. But that is just a compromise. What I'd recommend is to put most of that $5000 into either moving to someplace with a better job, or just straight-up investing it, and using the remaining fraction of it for hobby use to up your /diy/ skills. Even try starting a small business if you've got the expertise and a good enough plan.

dude, save your money. The reason why poor people are poor is because they do not know how to save money. either hold onto it and make money off of interest from an bank or invest to make more money. Then buy land with a reasonable amount of money.

I'll echo what the other guy said. $5k is a lot of money, but its fucking nothing when you have to spend it on living expenses.

A plot of land in the middle of fuckall is still going to be tens of thousands. Then you'll want a building on it, even a small one is tens of thousands. Then you want stuff like electricity and running water? Another tens of thousands, want enough land to grow food and flowers? Add ten thousand. If you want an actual contractor grading the land, and planning the structure, its often $5k+ just to have them lay out the initial plans.

Oh yeah, you're 30 minutes from civilization, so you're going to need a reliable car to get to your job to pay the loan off of your [tens of thousands multiple by X] property. Thats $5k+

Houses and land cost hundreds of thousands now. You're not going to find a large enough parcel of land for a thousand bucks, then build a hobo shack on it unless you're in Alaska or some shit.

We're quickly going away from /diy/ but put that money into savings, you should have AT LEAST 1 year of cash on hand to live (pay rent, bills, food, entertainment) without a job. Say you lost your job or income tomorrow, could you live your current lifestyle for 1 year with the money you have in the bank? If that answer is 'no' then you need to save more. This is essentially a personal slush fund for JIC. Crash your car, get a hospital bill, lose your job, spouse needs money etc.

You can save money by doing more things yourself; cook for yourself more often, do your own home repairs, learn to fix your car etc.

5000 won't get you any interest in a savings account

You will loose money on inflation.
You can open up a CD account with 5k. But you only break even with interest against inflation

>> No.1141699

$5,000 is a drop in the bucket. Save your money until you have at least $40,000. Even then, $40,000 is not going to cover everything you need but it will be more manageable. You won't last six months wherever you go with only $5,000.

You probably will ignore everyone in this thread telling you the truth, that $5,000 isn't shit, and you will try it anyways because you're stubborn/naive, based on the posts I've read here. Good luck faggot.

5k isn't that much you'd need maybe, like, 30-40k. 15k if you really know what you're doing.

your biggest barrier is really going to be finding the land. donate some time to habitat for humanity, take a community college course, whatever. cordwood and earthbags are both interesting building materials but it's hard to make them work since they're off-wheels

square foot gardening's pretty good. look into that. join a community garden if you can.

You could probably get an old van and retrofit it into a mini camper for 5k, but that might be pushing it a bit. You are going to want to set aside some money for the interior and utilities (a couple hundred to a couple thousand depending on how elaborate you want to get). Keep an eye out cheap vans in decent shape.
You can probably find one for about 3-4k. You are also going to want to have some extra cash set aside for gas and other expenses, since you will probably need to move it daily.

Invest it in a rental property.

Find a place for 80-90k. Buy it using an FHA loan, which only requires 3.5% down. Live in it for 1-2 years, however long us required by your mortgage document. Then move out and rent the place out. Rinse and repeat a few times until your rentals are cash flowing enough to pay for your dream home.

It's about the only way to invest such a small amount. Using that $5k to get a rental, you should expect 3-4k in income every year, not including the money that is paying off your mortgage. You can keep doing this with FHA loans as long as you need to. The biggest thing is to get a good deal on the property when you buy it. If you pick right, you can buy a place whose value will appreciate by 10-20% over the next 5 years.

I have spent that much while staying with family, only having to pay for renting a car and airfare (and food). I've spent close to that much enjoying myself while staying with someone, not renting a car, and only paying for airfare and food.

I think $1000 might cover a staycation of a life time for one, not including hookers.

Be sure to share your pictures.
