>Why would someone over clock a router and install a custom OS? Does this somehow increase speeds?

There is a ton of features that are extremely useful depending on what sort of servers and other setups you have in your house.

Once you get past basic wifi, most routers have very poor feature sets. A lot are proprietary meaning you have to download a Netgear app or something stupid like that, or they flat out dont work right.

You install the open source software without bloat and other garbage, itll allow you to open up a router to perform much better than just stock. You may overclock it because you are running a lot more features. Not to mention in the router world, youll get a few firmware updates and then they just drop support altogether shortly after leaving bugs and other security problems.

Its obviously not a big deal for people who just want basic wifi.

There is a short list of features listed here
https://www.flashrouters.com/learn/router-basics/what-is-tomato
There is no stock router that comes even close to having even half of the features listed

It really depends in the person.
I am on data capped internet.
My router stock had a "bandwidth monitor".

It was slow, inaccurate, and its way of warning you that you have hit a limit was a fucking pop-up in firefox. Ignore the fact that its only a pop up on ONE computer IF when you hit the trigger firefox was actively open. It wont show up the next time you open firefox, you just wont get notified.

You could set up logging to send an email to you, but you couldnt set up your bandwidth monitor to email you. You could only check the bandwith usage by using netgears app on your phone (which blew) or by logging all the way into the router. Btw, logging into the router was slow as fuck because of the bloat.

This is a fucking 250$ router (ac3200) that lacks basic functionality you expect out of even a cheap router.

Is it really that hard to have my router tell me what PC is using the most internet, and to email me when I hit my set triggers?
Not to mention the QOS features are really fucking nice

That pole though. Looks like it's really shitty third-world concrete and like 6"x6" That shit needs to flex and bend.

The corners are worn smooth by concrete pole climbers.

>what features would someone want from a router other than routing of data and wifi?
I'm using dd-wrt on some old 5$ tp-links to turn them into a wds mesh (think of it as multiple wifi repeaters connected together) for my home, garage and garden. Also the default software had a nasty backdoor (googling up that router turned it on the first page of results), that allowed ANYONE to log into them as a root.
Custom software is usually some nasty, inefficient, insecure, obligatory crapware with no features.
With dd-wrt I can monitor network usage of specific devices, log their activity and trim their bandwidth if necessary so I don't have to argue with my family if I want to make a skype call.

My best cringe I sadly don't have a picture of- a light switch mounted INSIDE a tile shower. Remember tile is tricky to work with, so a tile cutter (who had presumably worked with bathrooms before), and an electrician and possibly a plumber all looked at an electrical lightswitch mounted directly in the sights of a shower nozzle and said "OK, this is good".

Well. Each cable is different. It may look like a mess from a far but when you get closer you can tell the difference.

Phone lines are difficult to pirate because numbers need to be allocated from the exchange so you also need a guy/access to inside the exchange.

Exposed power lines are universally at the top of the power poles so anything running from that height is power. Also again power line is obviously different from other line.

It's not burning, from gas. It's a problem with a ground going to the gas line and a short from the main power. Electricity is taking the easiest route from wherever it is shorted to ground, through the gas line. The pipe can't take that kind of current so it heats up until it finds an equilibrium between its resistance and current draw.

Finally had a chance to take a good look at the crack in my garage wall and it turns out at least significant part of it is built from hollow bricks standing on their ends aka soldier position. It is also one brick thick. No wonder it cracked. On a side note, a sort of plaster thing they covered it with to hide this atrocity is in some places actually harder than the reinforced concrete slab the whole thing is standing on. I needed to knock some of it away in one place and could barely make a few dents with a chisel. I think it was built somewhere in early 80's.

They never made them in bulk because there was no reason to. They had incandescent bulbs made so cheaply even florescent was more expensive.

Think of it this way: what is a single use of an led that isn't decadent?

As a status light? They were making incandescent bulbs so cheaply it made no sense to use leds.

As digital displays? They didn't use digital displays until right before the fall

For low energy circuits? You don't need to worry that much about energy efficiency when most homes have gas/wood stoves and only one light bulb in their house

Additionally go around your house and try to find a single thing that had an led on it made before 1990. Go around some labs with tools from the 80s, you won't find a single instrument with an led

It's not that the soviets couldn't male leds, it's that there was no point

Why would they set up a factory for something that was considered a silly little light that is barely visible?

It is true they had some leds that were shipped in and re-labeled with soviet markings, but these were not soviet

Years ago a friend of mine went to church for the first time with his gf at the time on Christmas eve. Now he wasn't stupid but he decided to take acid that night to enjoy the Christmas celebrations. So they had lots of candles and it started a fire that spread so quickly onto the curtains that he barely escaped.

Short story long he just stood there and watched the fire. He also didn't make it out alive because he just stood there. When I asked him why he didn't run he said "He thought it was all part of the show"

Anyhow, one day I am doing stupid kid shit, probably brawling or whatever, but the frame breaks right at the corner of the hinge. Not the hinge itself, but further forwards where the hinge sits next to the glass. A really shitty place to have a frame broken. But gladly a kid had his hotglue pistol with him that day. And it worked. I wore that frame for another two or three months until I got new glasses.
