I'm drowning in dust. Every time I touch something it's like a tornado of hives and itchy noses

What can I do about it?
My central air system already has an air filter but it doesn't do much for the dust that's already in my room

I've already considered/done
>cleaning more often (but it builds up so fast so as to be impractical)
>Moving electronics (can't move them)
>Brushing dog more often (doesn't help much)
>shaving dog (do this every few months)

But I have an idea: buying one of those cut-it-yourself air filters and strapping it to the back of a small fan.
I'm just worried that it'll move so little air so as to be negligible. It's like a 10-12 inch diameter fan, not sure about the ft3/m rating, but I'm sure the air filter will slow it down a bit

Do you have a carpet? I personally don't understand American's fascination with carpets, they seem to make it much harder to clean and maintain an area dust free.

I was actually going to make another thread about that. I do have a carpet, it fucking sucks.
It's so dirty, it smells terrible, and I can never get it clean.

I want to buy a pile rake so I can really get in there and clean it.

Anyway, to save /diy/ another thread

Wash bedsheets/curtains once a month. Vacuum once a week. You can also get a water feature (or diy one) and put it in line with your rooms natural air stream. This will trap the dust in the water and the filter will catch it. This tends to raise the humidity a bit tho.

>> No.1091585

Buy an ionizer, or an air filter with one built in.

Basically, it leaks negative ions into the air that stick to dust particles, those dust particles are then attracted to surfaces in the room to get rid of the charge. Over time it makes all the dust in a room settle, just wipe it up and remove it from the room.

One issue with this is that the biggest surface in your room will be your carpet, which is basically a massive dust trap preventing you from removing it from the room. You have two choices here, either rip it up and replace it with wooden floor and tasteful rugs like a civilised person, or rent a proper carpet cleaner. One of the ones that jets water and detergent out of a nozzle and simultaneously sucks it up through the other half of the nozzle. I've used a couple and they work really well.

In all seriousness get a roomba, this thing changed my life. My house is so much cleaner now. I figure I don't do my dishes or laundry because my dishwasher, washing machine, and dryer do that for me. I shouldn't have to sweep or vacuum either, something else to do that for me.

This, I'm currently living in the city and there's dust everywhere, I wish I had one here. I have one at home and it just sucks all the crap out of the ground, it would save me a lot of time since I would only have to mop the floor once or twice a month.

The best thing you can do is to wash all the bedsheets, curtains, clothes,... any textile that can be removed, and shake them out the window from time to time to get dust out. Also, if you live in a city like me, a lot of dust comes from outside, so try to keep the windows closed (specially the ones facing the street) except when it's raining. I'm a bit paranoid about dust too, and that helps a bit.

I do not recommend robot vacuums if you have pets. The best time for them to run is when you're not home. If your pet leaves a nugget or tosses lunch, the vacuum will smear it across the room. They can not detect wet or semisolid objects as they run into them.

>> No.1091807

+1 for this but also check with a vet that your dog does not have some sort of dermal fungal infection. If you want to do the filter shit your only true solution is to never let the dog in the room and create a a higher air pressure in the room so that the clean room will never have contaminated air move into it from the room where the dog lives in.

How often do you "dust"
How often do you vacuum?
How often do you do your bedsheets?
How often do you clean?

For context my husband has bad allergies. We live in the country by a dirt road, have three Akitas and two cats.
I dust surfaces daily, vacuum twice weekly, launder linens and duvet cover weekly, and clean every 2 days. His allergies are well controlled without medicine and neighbors and friends are jealous of how clean my house is.

This.

I have several of them in this style. I picked them up at local thrift stores, replaced the carbon pre-filters in two and both filters in the one that was used by a smoker, and was good to go.

One of these in a large room will help keep the dust and dander down immensely. When you first set it up, let it run continuously and while it's running you can occasionally blow air into dusty crevices and let it get into the air so the filter picks it up.

Make sure you buy some bulk pre-filter material so you can replace it as it clogs.

thanks senpai

i was also one of the contributors who made my own box fan, but to expand on that

i remember there was a consensus that box fans are not ideal for the job because of the fans is not built to operate under air pressure, and a inline fan filter (pic related) is a much better solution that will last longer and more effective, although more expensive

mattias made lots of fan filters and one of the experiments he did was just blowing a box fan into a filter a few inches away without even attaching the two together, but it is still effective at reducing dust

Made one of these out of an old air ionizer with a busted fan. Salvaged the HV system. Soldered four pins to the end of a short bit of 12ga wire left over from running AC. That made the emitter.

Next you need to set up a grounded metal plate or object.

I used my 4-drawer filing cabinet. Grounded it and after a few hours it was covered with dust.

Worked like a charm for a couple of years till I had to replace the furnace and put in a better air filter.

Nah I have pets, you just do a once-over before it starts. You can just run it when your home, like how you do laundry when your at home not at work. If your pet leaves a nugget it needs to be potty trained better. I have caught throwup one time, but that's why you check the floor before it starts.

It does suprisingly well in the corners. Although it's circular there's a rotating brush that sticks out and spins in a circle to pull stuff in. The 960 and 980 models can do an "edge clean" where it sweeps/vaccums the whole floor, then does one more vaccum of the full perimeter as a finisher.

>>1092369
Solid ten. You'll just have to empty the bin more often but it picks up hair extreamly well. I started with a good house cleaning, and now it runs twice a week to maintain. I have a dog and a cat btw. They're built for cleaning up pet hair, that's why the use the HEPA filter. A pet that sheds a lot is no issue, it's literally designed to sweep and vacuum lol. It even does a great job of removing those pet hair dust bunnies that always end up in the corners. Bottom line I can speak from experience as a roomba owner (980 model) and not just someone guessing without ever having used one - those things are a beast and it'll clean up your shit load of pet hair no problem. Take my advise, buy one. Gift yourself one less chore in life.

Do not buy an ionizer. When those machines produce ion, it bonds to anything it touches, not just dust. Like the inside of your lungs. Look up some studies on it, they are not supposed to be used in indoor occupied spaces, and for the love of God, not where you sleep. Buy an air filtration system, I would recommend a filter queen defender. They also make a vacuum. Both machines filter to .01 microns with 99.98% accuracy. Plus, the way the machines are designed keeps the filters from clogging as fast as say, a HEPA filter which only filters to .03 microns.
