No, just someone who likes designing and planning things. I did however help construct most of the furniture in our house (mother was taught by her father, who built engines for rolls royce), including the bed I'm lying on at the moment, which I intend to incorporate into my design.

The top one is more closed in, but it depends on exactly how much storage you need and your desired effect. If you want man-cave of solitude where everything's in reach, then the above may suit you more, especially as electronics could be more easily integrated, however my aim is to create more of a "window-box" type space, so I can close off the curtains to my room, and open the ones to the outside.
Use of colour (and possibly strategic lighting and mirrors) would be necessary in order to combat stuffiness and create the illusion of more space in both cases, but as I'm using this to replace a good deal of my current storage, I'm going to get a larger mattress to increase the overall area of the unit.

If you're intending to get rid of your current furniture and try building this from scratch (or almost) may I suggest you try either freecycling or purchasing a bed and units already constructed that you can adapt, as this may be easier than trying to construct an entire bed.

I've just realised the slight error in this image, the top of my unit will be flush with the ceiling of my room, and the "wall" at the rear will be as minimalistic as possible to provide sufficient support (for both the cupboards and curtains) without blocking too much of the window. The empty rectangle seen towards the rear is the location of the window in relation to the unit. Looking at it from the room side, it should look something like this <
