there's always a need for trained engineers. when things are good you're setting up new equipment and when things are bad you're keeping old shit running. i don't know how the side business aspect stacks up to other trades but you should be able to sell yourself as a man with a welder. also, farm equipment and tractors are an engineer's job so you could probably change some bearings for old farmers in your spare time if you live near the countryside. i know a guy who does some artistic welding in his spare time and i dont think he's breaking even so stay away from that unless you can find a niche in furniture that doesn't compete with ikea
