Personally I suspect it'll be all CNC for me after I graduate from this Machinist course I'm taking.
So, I have a story from class today.

First a little bit of background - everything I've been doing for the past almost a year now has been on the manual machines. Bench projects (hand tools and filing), drill press, mill, three days on the shaper, and now I'm starting on the lathe. There isn't a whole lot of time left until I graduate and get a job, and I still have an entire CNC module to go.
My instructor is not fucking around when it comes to the lathe. There are less jokes and less smiles when he's going over the materials, and he's underlining everything with theory, then a demonstration, then guided practice, then letting us try it (on a short leash, for lack of a better term) one at a time. His biggest warnings are about the chuck key, and I have heard a lot about it.
One of the things I'm scared of is letting the chuck key out of my hand - ever. I don't let it go if I'm facing the machine. On the next lathe in front of me is a guy, let's call him Frank. Sometimes he turns around and watches what I'm doing, doesn't talk, doesn't interrupt, just watches.
