that's why I almost always go veroboard, PROTO777, breadboard, or I have the board made by some ebay company.
I'm more than anything impressed by the lack of CNC mills that have come out of the reprap community.
Are there any decent DIY pcb mills out there that are around $200?

it isn't about buying them or recycling them. It's about having what is pretty much a junkyard from which a much needed component can be salvaged.
Just last night I was able to get a 4000 series logic chip off a scrap board. I checked my bins before, and couldn't find a flip flop. Went to the junkyard bin, and found something that would work. I was able to finish what I was doing (and throw it in the trash shortly thereafter) without having to wait several weeks for more flippyfloppies to arrive and realize a much easier solution was available.
Inductors are often well labeled, same with aluminum caps. if not, they can be metered and size can approximate voltage rating with a bit of intuition.
also, pic related is a nice addition to my power supply. It operates the fan without introducing much noise and is rather compact by using mostly smd & the axial cap.

I just finished building a board to add a fan and panel voltmeter to my power supply. All salvaged components save for the wires. I think it's cringeworthy, as I can't solder SMD onto pads with solder on them worth a shit without two third hands. I also can't ever feed the right amount onto these ever.
