Seymour Cray, the founder of Cray Research, which made the world's most powerful supercomputers in the 80s and 90s, dug a tunnel from his basement to a nearby forest. When he'd get stuck on a design problem, he'd go down into the tunnel and dig for a while. When he'd come back, the solution to the problem he was working on often would become apparent. He joked it was elves from the woods sneaking in while he was digging and solving his supercomputer design problems for him. One time when digging, a tree above fell down into the tunnel. Instead of being dismayed at this setback, he used it as an opportunity to install a periscope.
