I'm not sure how it works with other stores, but I have a friend who works at a big name furniture n' office supply store; anything that doesn't sell, display pieces, anything they can't give away or do with, they destroy.
If they have a display chair, shelf, desk that's practically brand new, but don't want to use anymore they will take a knife, hammer, crowbar and destroy it before throwing it away.
Hammer up tables, break program disks, smash printers.
My friend said he nearly cried when he had to tear up a BRAND NEW high-priced leather office chair because the store didn't want to carry it anymore. Apparently this sort of thing happens in a lot of different stores. Damn waste.
