i would suggest a good fullrange driver for a beginners' project, the Vifa TG9FD-10-04 for example. Its cheap and actually really good. Will obviously not move mountains due to its size, but you could build a subwoofer later if you want more bass. I recommend a bass reflex cabinet at around 8 litres tuned to around 55-60 Hz.

the top box has a Vifa TG9 in it, here only playing above 80 Hz.
