Don't teach electronics with micros first. You need an understanding of the physical limitations of your digital components before you start whacking shit together. Things like pull-ups, input and output impedances, frequency responses and parasitics, and linear/saturated transistors. Starting with digital logic is one thing, but with arduino you're not even going to be mentioning propagation delay, synchronous and asynchronous circuits, logic families, or nyquist rates. Just lines of code and wondering why your circuit doesn't behave as it should.
