If you were able to take them apart and add tape after gluing them, you didn't do it right.

PVC "glue" is actually a solvent that welds the joint, and if applied properly it is essentially impossible to pull apart. The pipe and joint will shatter long before that happens.

Go to the home store and ask for guidance, someone should be able to point you to the right stuff (even better find a hardware store that has been around for 50 years+, they always have guys that know their shit).
