Little pot i made. Cut a template out of card with raised bits on, pressed into clay to make the pattern, then folded it up and joined. Fired the terracotta at stoneware temps to make it go that dark brown.

also when making your own clay from stuff dug up in the ground there are a couple of methods you can use to refine it further. Once you have the raw earth, leave it to dry out. Then crush it up into a powerder and sieve it through a series of increasingly fine screens. This removes the bits of stone and peices of decomposed organic matter in. Then mix it up with water and let that dry out. Any sand will have settled to the bottom. You can remove the top layers of clay and leave the sandy residue at the bottom. Its lengthy process but its easy to DIY.

another way is put your wet clay into cloth bag / old pillowcase and hang it up outside to dry.
