yurts stand up very well against hurricanes and tornadoes because they have no flat edges. The wind has nothing to catch onto and it just blows around the structure. The biggest danger is wind pressure lifting the roof off the building, which can be solved with a wind tie down kit. Basically it's an aircraft grade metal wire that bolts the center part of the roof to the floor.

You still need to pay to build the foundation, flooring, inner walls, plumbing, heating, and electricity tho. It's big enough to have a loft in it so the square footage may be a bit more than 710. Kinda small for 2 people but if you need more room they're cheap enough to buy a 2nd one and just have them linked up with a door.

You might want to look into a pre-fab yurt. A 30 foot round yurt (710 sq/feet, more if you build a loft) is about $10k. You will still need to build a floor or raised platform to build the yurt on and if you want rooms or a 2nd floor you'd need to hire a carpenter.

Personally when I get some money I plan to buy this yurt.

Install a radiant heating heating system that uses evacuated tubes to heat the water. Little wood burning stove for backup heat and abidance, I really love fire places. And if I can find a property with a stream I can do pico hydro power like >>216850 mentions. Otherwise I'll end up building solar panels (approximately $1/watt) and supplementing that with a homemade vawt wind turbine made out of plastic barrels.

This is my plan too. Except I plan to live in a yurt. They're cozy as fuck. There's a piece of property that's literally a 5 minute walk from where I love that's over 100 acres of nothing but old forest and horse trails. It use to be farm land back in the colonial days so there's tons of rock walls still standing. I looked up the info for it and the guy bought it for only $10,000. There's no houses on the property so I'm pretty sure all he uses it for is hunting. I'm thinking of cold calling the guy to see if he'd sell but I'm afraid of what he'd say, pluss I don't have the money right now.

they would always buy one. This yurt is 30 feet across and costs only $10k. It doesn't come with Interior walls or flooring so that's probably cost you another $10k.
