you might want something more robust to noise. those little nRF24L01+ boards are good for this but you'll need a uC to configure them
if you don't want to use a uC, how about an RC circuit and a resistor ladder of comparators? you could generate a square wave output to your IR transmitter, and use a standard op-amp bandpass filter to tune it in, followed by a diode and integrator to detect the presence of the square wave. the nice (or maybe not) thing about this is you have to hold down the IR transmit button until the shutter is released, so you can abort a shot just by letting go.
