I'm trying to build a system like the one described in this paper: http://www.sidhantgupta.com/docs/ElectriSense.pdf

I'm a statistical programmer by occupation and just starting to learn about diy electronics. I understand the block diagram that's in the paper, but I don't have the coin for an SDR module.

Is there a way to build inexpensively build an SDR module or bypass SDR completely and run this straight into GPIO pins or some shit?

I know sparks can fly when it makes contact, I know it's dangerous to use it without a casing, I know you can lose part of your finger if you touch it when connected to the outlet.

I'll be using it mainly with 12 v batteries so don't worry about that.

P.D: the relay can be tested without being connected to to the outlet, I just want the mechanical part to work with 5v dc, but It would be a lot of work to remove, try, remove, try...

I tested the resistance of the coil and I got >2000k Ohms.

buy a breadboard, learn to desolder things, and mine components from cheap/broken/old electronics. Look up plans online. Just have fun with it.
